Rich Girl Caretaker Vol. 2 Chapter 1

A Proposal from Mirei Tennouji

"Well, I'm heading to school."

I got out of the car and bowed to Shizune-san and the driver. Hinako was walking about ten meters ahead of me. We maintained this distance as we walked to school.

"Konohana-san, good morning."

"Ah, Tomonari-kun, good morning."

We met at the shoe lockers and greeted each other. In reality, we'd already said good morning in Hinako's bedroom... but for the public, this was our first greeting of the day.

She played the "perfect ojou-sama," projecting an aura that was both approachable and fitting for a "flower on a high peak," releasing a charm that could make any man fall for her. However, perhaps because I knew that wasn't her true self, I preferred her usual—real—self.

"...It's such a pain every time."

"...What is?"

Hinako whispered her true feelings, and I, checking to see if anyone was listening, whispered back.

"We come together in the morning... but we have to split up just to meet again."

"...It can't be helped. If people found out we live together, it would be a huge problem."

It was a hassle, but it was the best way to handle it. Rumors that Hinako and I were friends had apparently spread throughout the school, thanks to the tea parties and study groups. Because of that, I no longer needed to keep a safe distance from Hinako like I did at the beginning. We could chat openly in the classroom, and even if we were seen together after school, we could mostly brush it off.

"But... sometimes I want to walk to school with you."

"We ride in the same car most of the way, right? We just split up at the end."

"That's not what I mean..."

She lowered her gaze and said:

"I want... to walk outside with you."

Oh, I see. I thought that was true, and it was a shame, but it wasn't something we could easily do... I'll try talking to Shizune-san about it next time.

"Ah! You two!"

As I was changing my shoes at the locker, Hinako and I ran into our classmate, Karen Asahi.

"Good morning."

"Mhm, mornin'! Hey, the midterm exam rankings are posted in front of the staff room. Wanna go see?"

Asahi-san said, looking at me and Hinako. Kiou Academy posts the rankings after every exam, but they only list the top fifty. I'm probably not on the list.

I exchanged a look with Hinako, and we both nodded at almost the same time.

"Sure."

"I'll go too."

There was still some time before class. It would be boring to just wait in the classroom, and frankly, I was curious about the rankings. My old high school didn't have this custom...

The three of us headed to the staff room. On the way, we saw another familiar male student.

"Ah, Taisho-kun."

"Oh, you guys came too."

Taisho noticed us and gave a small smile.

"It's not like you're on the list anyway."

"Shut up. Even if I'm not on it, I still want to look."

Taisho said, looking at the list posted on the bulletin board. I followed his gaze to the bulletin board. The first name to jump out was, of course, a familiar one.

"Konohana-san is first again! As expected!"

"Fufu, thank you."

Hinako revealed an elegant smile, truly befitting a lady. Her beauty captured the attention of all the students around us. Knowing her true nature, I occasionally almost forget that she's actually a multi-talented genius. She really is... outstanding only in her abilities. Just her abilities.

"Ow."

Just then, Hinako suddenly stepped on my foot.

"...You seem to be thinking something rude."

How did you know?

She puffed out her cheeks angrily, and I looked away. I feel like her expressions have become much richer than before. And it wasn't an act; it was her true self. I think this is a good trend, even if I don't know what sparked the change. Hinako's transformation might not be all bad.

As I was thinking this, my gaze shifted, and I saw a girl with golden, vertically-curled hair standing out in the crowd. She had a finger on her chin and looked troubled. I was concerned about her and couldn't help but call out:

"Tennouji-san?"

"Ah, Tomonari-kun, you're here too."

Mirei Tennouji. She is the beloved daughter of the Tennouji Group, a massive conglomerate (zaibatsu) that rivals the Konohana Group. I glanced at the bulletin board she had been looking at and spoke:

"Congratulations on second place."

"...As long as that detestable name is in first place, I can't be happy."

I was just praising her honestly, but she looked frustrated. Come to think of it, she has always seen Hinako as a rival since we first met. She could never be satisfied seeing Hinako's name ranked above her own.

"But this result is very meaningful."

Meaningful? I tilted my head, confused, and she explained:

"Compared to last time, I've closed the gap with Konohana-san. Her score didn't drop, which means this is undoubtedly my own improvement...! Hehehe, victory is finally within sight...!"

Tennouji-san muttered this, her eyes burning with ambition.

"By the way, what was your rank?"

She asked so naturally that my response was delayed.

"I'm not on the list. Probably average, or lower-middle."

"What?"

She radiated a slight anger and asked again:

"What did you just say?"

"Er, um, my rank is average or lower-middle..."

"You received my personal tutoring... and your score is below average?"

A vein bulged on her forehead.

"Th-The subjects you taught me went better, but..."

"Silence!"

She shouted sharply.

"You're the same as ever, no ambition! No matter how hard you work, if your goals are too low, you won't grow."

"Ngh."

That sentence pierced my chest.

I thought I was recognizing my own limits and growing steadily, but perhaps that was just a self-deprecating way of thinking.

"Don't slouch."

"Y-Yes, ma'am."

After her correction, I instantly straightened the back I hadn't realized I'd bent.

"Really... I've thought this for a while, but you really wear your heart on your sleeve."

"I-Is that so...?"

I wasn't aware of it at all.

"But, on the other hand, if you just gained some real confidence, you could probably act with more dignity."

After saying this, Tennouji-san fell into a thoughtful pose. I waited nervously for what she would say next, and...

"I have a proposal. Would you like to spend your time after school with me for a while?"

She made a suggestion that was far beyond my expectations.

It was the break after the first period. I formally discussed Tennouji-san's proposal with her.

"What did you mean, 'spend my time after school' with you?"

"I will tutor you."

She continued to explain her intention:

"I participated in the study group you organized before... To be honest, that was the first time I had ever taught someone else."

"Is that so."

"Yes. And because of that, I discovered for the first time... that teaching others is also beneficial for me."

In other words... what does she mean? Seeing my confused tilt, Tennouji-san explained:

"Simply put, teaching others also improves my own academic ability. The results of the midterms are proof. I closed the gap with Konohana-san."

I see. I understood what she meant.

"So, you're saying you'd like to continue that kind of study group?"

"Precisely."

I nodded, understanding her intent.

"But, why ask me for help?"

"Because out of all the people around me, your grades are the worst."

"Ngh..."

I was frustrated, but I couldn't argue.

"That said, this way I'm the only one benefiting. It would be nice if there was something I could do to help you in return..."

"...For me, just having you teach me is more than enough."

"No. Teaching you is based on my own request, so I must also offer something in return, or it wouldn't be fair."

She's so upright. It was less about my feelings and more that she wouldn't be able to accept it otherwise.

"Besides studying, is there anything else you're bad at?"

"Bad at..."

I thought back on all the mistakes I'd made since becoming an attendant. My academics, athletics, self-defense, and duties in the mansion were all far from perfect, but the thing I was worst at was probably...

"...Etiquette, I guess."

Hearing my answer, Tennouji-san smiled, satisfied.

"In that case, I shall personally teach you etiquette! The Tennouji family is a family of courtesy. Etiquette is my specialty!"

She placed a hand on her chest, looking spirited, as if to say "Leave it to me!" Honestly, this was a huge help. But my time after school wasn't mine alone to decide.

"I'm grateful for the offer... but please let me think about it."

When I said that, she looked puzzled.

"Why? Weren't you motivated?"

"Um, it's because of family circumstances. I can't just change my schedule on my own."

"I see. Your family seems very strict."

Strict is one way to put it. It's the world-famous Konohana Group, after all. Although I'd gotten used to it recently, I sometimes felt like I was just a freeloader who couldn't hold his head high. Remembering my daily struggles, I let out a small sigh... and noticed Tennouji-san staring at me silently.

"Tomonari-kun, do you act like this at home, too?"

"Like this...?"

"Lacking confidence, and a bit timid."

Her observations were as sharp as ever. But if I seemed timid now, I must be the same way at the mansion.

"At home... I'm probably like this, too."

When I answered, she sighed.

"There's another reason I invited you, besides your grades. It's your behavior here at school."

She stared straight into my eyes and continued:

"I'll be blunt—you feel inferior to the other students, don't you?"

For a second, it felt like my heart had been seized. It wasn't that I was shocked she'd seen through my secret... it was that she had exposed a part of me that even I hadn't realized.

I was the only commoner at Kiou Academy. Compared to the others, my intelligence and my family background were far inferior. I didn't consciously think about it, but it flashed through my mind from time to time. I, with my true status, should never have been able to enter Kiou Academy. I only had a spot here thanks to the Konohana family's power. It was hard not to feel inferior.

—Maybe I do have an inferiority complex. I was only just now realizing it. Seeing me silent, Tennouji-san must have read my mind, as she continued:

"You are by no means the only student at Kiou Academy who feels that way. But, fortunately, you are motivated. If you accept my guidance, I guarantee you can shed that inferiority complex."

I was so grateful. The offer was so good I wanted to accept it on the spot. As an attendant, I wanted to be useful to Hinako. As that feeling grew, the number of challenges I had to face directly also increased. This might just be intuition, but if I let Tennouji-san teach me academics and etiquette, I had a feeling all these problems could be solved.

"We should be getting back to class. I hope you'll give me an answer soon."

"...I understand. I'll give you an answer tomorrow."

I'll talk to Shizune-san as soon as school is over.

"Thank you for asking me... You're very perceptive. Honestly, I didn't think you'd read me so clearly."

"You don't need to flatter me. It's nothing remarkable."

"No, I'm genuinely impressed."

I said what I truly felt, full of admiration. She looked away.

"It's really no big deal... It's just that I've been there, too."

The last half of her sentence was almost a mumble, so I didn't quite hear it. However, her usual resolute attitude was replaced by a rare, somber expression, and it left an impression on me.

After school. I returned to the Konohana mansion and received my usual instruction from Shizune-san.

"That's all for today's lesson. Good work."

"Thank you for your hard work."

Prep, review, etiquette lectures, and self-defense. When the various lessons were over, I finally felt like the day was done. In the past, my stamina would be completely gone by this point, and I'd be unable to speak properly. Now, I had a little energy to spare. It must mean I've grown, both mentally and physically. Next, I had to go to Hinako's room for bath duty. I wiped off my sweat and looked at Shizune-san, who was looking over some documents with a troubled expression.

"What are those documents?"

"Your training schedule. You're improving faster than I expected, so I have to readjust it."

She stared at the documents with a serious face. ...The timing might be perfect.

"Shizune-san, there's something I'd like to discuss..."

I said, and proceeded to explain what I'd talked about with Tennouji-san today. —About her tutoring me in academics and etiquette after school.

"...I see. So that's what you discussed with Tennouji-sama."

After listening, she put the documents down for a moment and fell into thought.

"What do you want to do?"

"Personally, I want to accept. Tennouji-san is a good teacher... and reliable in many ways."

Shizune-san's teaching methods were excellent, but Tennouji-san was a student in the same grade, so she could give me advice from the same perspective. And—she had said this to me:

'You feel inferior, don't you?'

'If you accept my guidance, I guarantee you can shed that inferiority complex.'

Those words had struck a deep chord with me. Tennouji-san was always composed and dignified, a model Kiou Academy student. I might not have been aware of it, but I think I've always admired that about her.

"I feel that if I accept her guidance... I can become an attendant more worthy of Hinako."

I wanted to be an attendant who could casually accompany Hinako when she needed a break, but also flawlessly support her when it mattered. To achieve that, I was still lacking in many ways, and I felt I could learn what I needed from Tennouji-san.

"I see no problem with it."

Shizune-san continued:

"Having Tennouji-sama teach you etiquette will likely be more effective than my lessons. And... Master Kagen asked me to pass on a message. He wishes for you to actively build connections for the Konohana family, in Ojou-sama's place."

"...Kagen-san said that?"

"Yes. Just as you invited Miyakojima-sama and Tennouji-sama to the banquet, he wants you to naturally guide things in a way that reflects well on Ojou-sama."

Honestly, I was surprised. I didn't think Kagen-san trusted me. If his opinion of me had changed, the banquet must have been the catalyst. That night, I felt like I had touched his true feelings for the first time.

"I understand. If that's the case, I'll handle it properly."

"I'm counting on you. But, be subtle... within the reasonable bounds of a student."

As a student. As a friend. It meant I could freely build connections within that scope, and eventually link them to Hinako.

"...Itsuki?"

Just then, the door to the dojo opened, and Hinako's voice called out.

"Not... bath time yet?"

"Sorry, I was just talking with Shizune-san."

"...Talking?"

Hinako tilted her head, confused, so I explained:

"I was going to talk to you about this, too. For a little while, I won't be coming home with you right after school. Is that okay?"

"...Huh?"

Her eyes went wide with surprise.

"Now that I've been rehired by Kagen-san, I feel I have to get serious and learn everything I can. I want to improve my grades at school, and I want to learn proper etiquette so I don't embarrass myself at social functions. To do that, I'd like to use my time after school for a while."

"Meaning, you'll have someone else teach you?... Can't Shizune do it?"

Shizune-san answered that question:

"I have other duties, so I can't always focus on Itsuki-san's lessons. And my workload has increased recently due to the banquet... I may not be able to spare much time to train him for a while."

"...Mmph. Then what about me...?"

"Ojou-sama, you also have many things you must accomplish, so your schedule is quite tight. Besides, a change of environment, learning from different people, will be beneficial for Itsuki-san himself."

"Ngh... mm..."

If I had to say, Hinako looked reluctant. She thought for about thirty seconds, and finally, her cherry-like lips parted slowly:

"Itsuki... are you doing this for me?"

"Maybe a little different... but I'm doing it so I can be a proper attendant for you."

I wasn't trying to make her feel indebted, but it was because I wanted to help Hinako more that I was planning to accept this offer. Hinako let out a distressed "Nngh..." sound, then sighed.

"Can't be helped, then... I'll allow it."

"Thank you."

Hinako had given her permission, too. I'll tell Tennouji-san I accept her offer tomorrow.

"But... who are you asking to teach you...?"

At that question, I replied:

"Tennouji-san."

Hinako seemed a little surprised. I restated it:

"I'll be spending my time after school with Tennouji-san for a while."

".................."

Inside the bathroom in Hinako's private chambers. I was standing guard as Hinako soaked in the tub, eating an ice pop.

"Sooo good~..."

She was the very picture of laziness, a complete departure from her school persona. I couldn't help but give a wry smile.

"Does this mean I'm forgiven?"

"...Not yet. This isn't quite enough."

"Give me a break. It's exhausting smuggling ice pops in here without Shizune-san catching on."

I sighed. She looked down at the water and spoke:

"I'm still not really happy about it... but if it's for my sake, I'll forgive you."

I had officially received permission to spend time with Tennouji-san. She had been against it ever since I brought it up in the dojo, but the ice pop bribe was the finishing move. She's been swamped lately with the attendant dismissal, the banquet, and everything else, so maybe she was just happy to relax for the first time in a while. Even so, she was still clearly pouting. She stared sulkily at the water's surface, so I said:

"If you really don't like it, I can refuse..."

"............I don't want to get in your way."

"...I see."

She was being considerate of my feelings. That was supposed to be my job as her attendant... but it made me a little happy.

"To be honest, I'm actually a little relieved."

"Relieved...?"

"Because I felt like you've been avoiding me lately."

"...Why would you think that?"

"Well, you didn't want me to wake you up in the morning, and you've been keeping your distance, right?"

At that, she puffed her cheeks in a small pout.

"I'm not trying to keep my distance."

"Then is there a reason?"

"...Ngh."

She looked conflicted and muttered quietly:

"...I don't wanna say."

I was curious, but if she didn't want to talk about it, I couldn't press her.

"By the way, Hinako."

"...What?"

"Aren't you hot in that?"

The Hinako in front of me was wearing the Kiou Academy-issued school swimsuit. It was an elegant design, very fitting for the academy. But seeing it in a bathroom, it looked a little stuffy.

"...No."

"You used to wear a bikini. Why the sudden switch to the school swimsuit?"

"...Because I wanted to."

Hinako said, seeming to find it hard to say. She looked away and turned her back to me. Seeing that, I thought— —She is avoiding me, isn't she? And yet, she's willing to bathe with me, and she said she wants to spend as much time as possible together after school... I have no idea what's going on in her head. As her attendant, I've been by her side for over a month. I thought I was starting to understand her bit by bit, but lately, I understand her less and less. What's going on?

"Okay, wash my hair."

"...Right."

I'll worry about it later. I reached for Hinako's head. She might be a little dizzy from the bath; her ears were bright red.

"Nnfuu—..."

She let out a satisfied, breathy sound. Oh well. At least she wouldn't let someone she dislikes touch her hair.

"...Itsuki."

"Hm?"

As I lathered her hair with shampoo, she whispered:

"Don't... do this for Tennouji-san."

I thought she was going to say something serious. I couldn't help but smile, a little relieved.

"I don't think I could."

You have no idea how much effort it took me to get used to this. I can do it nonchalantly now, but when I first started, it was torture.

"Hm?"

I suddenly noticed Hinako's hair was caught on her swimsuit strap.

"I'm going to pull the strap down a bit."

"...Eh?"

As I pulled down her left strap, I thought I heard a strange sound.

"Long hair is a pain at times like this."

"I-Itsuki...?"

"Just a little longer, almost done."

"...!"

Hinako suddenly shot up and sank into the tub. Bubbles rose to the surface. At their center, Hinako glared at me, her face bright red.

"Insen...!"

"Insen?"

"Insen... Insensitive...!!"

Hinako protectively crossed her hands over her shoulders.

"Me, insensitive..."

I never thought I'd hear that from the person who took her own swimsuit off.

The next day. I told Tennouji-san "I got permission" during break, and we started our study session immediately after school.

"Good! I will educate you thoroughly!"

"Pl-Please be gentle..."

The other students were leaving. Tennouji-san and I met at the cafe next to the dining hall. It's a little late to ask, but am I going to survive this? She was so motivated it was starting to worry me.

"Hehehe... Defeat Hinako Konohana...! This time, I'll wipe that fake smile right off her face...!"

Tennouji-san said, a demonic smile on her face. She had arrived first and already ordered my drink. The tea arrived just as I sat down.

"First, we set goals. My goal is to beat Hinako Konohana on the next mock exam."

She said, elegantly sipping her tea.

"When is the mock exam?"

"In one month."

The gap between her score and Hinako's was already tiny. If she studied hard for a month, victory was definitely possible.

"And, I will have you score in the top fifty on that exam."

"Huh?"

I was startled by the sudden declaration.

"Top fifty...? I'm lower-middle right now. That's a huge jump..."

"You don't need to worry. After all, I will be the one personally instructing you."

She puffed out her chest, full of confidence. I felt conflicted. If I showed any more weakness, I'd just be digging my own grave. I just have to trust her and try.

"Also, you said you wanted to learn etiquette... What brought that on?"

At her question, I thought for a moment before answering:

"I felt it when I attended the Konohana family's banquet... I'm still not good at blending into those kinds of settings naturally. I want to at least learn enough not to embarrass myself."

"A commendable attitude."

She nodded, satisfied.

"In that case, I will teach you etiquette suitable for high society. Table manners, communication skills... and it would be good to teach you ballroom dancing as well."

"B-Ballroom dancing?"

"What can you dance?"

Even if you ask me that... If I had to name one, it would be the one I practiced for sports day—

"...The Soran Bushi (Fisherman's Dance)."

"What?"

"Sorry, I can't dance at all."

The Soran Bushi is not exactly appropriate for a social function. No, wait, if I actually did it, I might get a laugh, but the price for that laugh would be my social standing.

"Then we'll start you from the basics for dancing, too."

She muttered:

"The general plan is set. Let's begin the lesson at once. We'll study until 6 PM, and after that, I'll teach you etiquette."

"Okay. Please, I'm in your hands."

6 PM. The study session ended smoothly. I finished the problems in my textbook and had Tennouji-san check my answers.

"...I see."

She checked my answers and murmured:

"It seems you've been studying properly on your own. You should be able to get a better score than before."

"Thank you."

Shizune-san's lessons were helpful, but Tennouji-san was a fellow student and could teach me methods for getting high scores. Thinking about the future, I probably should learn a wider range of knowledge, but right now, what I needed were grades that wouldn't be embarrassing to have at Hinako's side.

"What about you? Was this study session helpful?"

"Yes. It was more meaningful than I thought. I might enjoy teaching people."

She said, looking surprised at herself. Maybe because it was just the two of us, we were both able to focus more during today's session. But I was able to concentrate mostly thanks to her serious teaching.

"Why are you so competitive with Konohana-san?"

I casually asked the question I'd been wondering about.

"No particular reason."

She looked down for a moment, then met my eyes again and replied:

"Just to be clear, there's no special grudge between me and Konohana-san... If I had to say, it's just that as a member of the Tennouji family, I cannot lose to another student."

"Is that... like a family motto?"

"No. It's a standard I set for myself."

Why would she set such a strict standard for herself? I was puzzled, and Tennouji-san explained:

"This school is a microcosm of society. If you lose to others here, you will fall behind in the future... I believe the Tennouji Group is the most outstanding corporate group in this country. That being the case, to be defeated would violate my beliefs."

That was a noble way of thinking. If someone at my old high school had said that, they would have been laughed at. But in the unique environment of this school, her words had a sense of reality... Besides, Tennouji-san's usual attitude was so sincere. Because she was the one saying it, it sounded like it was filled with genuine conviction. However, on the other hand. As someone who grew up as a commoner, I couldn't help but have one question.

"...Do you ever feel that way of life is exhausting?"

"Not at all."

She answered immediately.

"As a member of the Tennouji family, my mission is to contribute to the Tennouji family... That is also the happiness I desire."

She declared it openly and honestly. It was very her. I regretted asking such a pointless question.

"Alright, next is etiquette."

She put away her textbook and prepared for the etiquette lecture.

"Tennouji-san, I have one more request. Could you please prioritize teaching me table manners?"

"I can, but is there a reason?"

"Yes. Um... it's a personal reason."

I wasn't confident I could explain it clearly, so even though I felt bad, I chose to be vague. She must have sensed this, as she didn't press further.

"In that case, Tomonari-kun, would you like to have dinner with me for the time being?"

"Dinner?"

"Yes. We can practice table manners through practical application. Fortunately, the school serves dishes from all over the world, so we can have a very substantial lesson."

I see. Eat dinner at school and learn table manners at the same time. It was a very efficient proposal, and I wanted to accept, but I should check with Shizune-san first, just in case.

"I'll check with my family."

I said, leaving my seat and walking to the back of the school building to pull out my phone.

'Itsuki-wakasama, is something wrong?'

Shizune-san called me 'Waka-sama'. She must be assuming someone might overhear our conversation, so she's pretending to be my family's servant.

"Tennouji-san proposed that I eat dinner at school for a while, starting today. She's going to teach me table manners. Is that okay?"

'I see. That shouldn't be a problem...'

Shizune-san paused.

'My apologies, Ojou-sama wishes to speak with you. Please hold a moment.'

Hinako? What is it?

'Itsuki...?'

"Yeah. What's wrong?"

'...Are you coming home late today?'

She asked, her voice sounding a little disappointed.

"Not just today. I'll probably be home late for a while."

I replied. She was silent for a few seconds.

'...Come home... early, okay?'

She said, then handed the phone back to Shizune-san.

'That's how it is. If possible, please come home as early as you can.'

"...I understand."

What time should I ask Shizune-san to pick me up? I thought about it as we talked. I couldn't forget my original purpose. I am Hinako's attendant. Even though I'm learning from Tennouji-san now, I can't put the cart before the horse. I have to be by Hinako's side as much as possible.

"Sorry to keep you waiting."

When I returned to the cafe, Tennouji-san was already arranging the next lesson. She must have asked the cafe staff for help. Various pieces of cutlery were lined up on the table.

"This is really formal..."

"I am simply responding to your motivation."

She said, puffing her chest out proudly.

"It's a little late to ask, but is it really okay for me to get all the benefits here?"

"We've already discussed this. I am also spending my time meaningfully, so please don't worry about it."

She said, then added quietly:

"Besides... I see a bit of my old self in you, so I just feel like meddling a little."

Hearing that, I was puzzled.

"What do you mean by...?"

"Alright, let's begin the lesson."

Tennouji-san announced, as if to dodge the question.

8 PM. After Tennouji-san's lessons ended, I returned to the Konohana mansion in the car arranged for me.

"I'm home."

"Itsuki-san, welcome back. Good work."

I stepped into the mansion and immediately ran into Shizune-san.

"I'll probably be back around this time for a while."

"Understood. Just to be sure, may I ask what you learned?"

"Yes."

I explained the contents of Tennouji-san's lesson as we walked toward my room.

"—And that's what we covered."

"I see... We must formally thank Tennouji-sama. From what you've said, her lessons are quite proper."

"...You're right."

I had realized that, too. Tennouji-san said she was also benefiting, but from an outside perspective, I was the only one gaining anything. I'll have to thank her again.

"By the way, why did you want to learn table manners first?"

"Ah, that's because..."

I was a little embarrassed, but I figured it was fine to tell Shizune-san. So, I explained my reasoning.

"Is that so."

She nodded in understanding.

"It's good that you haven't forgotten your duties as an attendant."

"Right... After all, that's why I asked Tennouji-san to teach me in the first place."

Hearing me say that, Shizune-san gave a satisfied smile.

"Well then, Ojou-sama is eager to see you. Please go to her soon."

"Huh? What about self-defense training?"

"You'll be using a lot of stamina once you start your dance lessons. Considering that, let's lower the priority of self-defense training for now."

After talking with Tennouji-san, we planned to start dance lessons in a week. We couldn't very well practice dancing in the cafe, so we had to arrange a venue first. Since we hadn't arranged it today, we hadn't started.

"Besides, the dojo has been crowded lately."

"Crowded?"

At my question, Shizune-san replied with a complicated expression:

"Because you beat our house guards to a pulp, their pride was shattered... Since then, the number of people coming to the dojo for special training has increased."

"...Sorry."

"It's not your fault. If anything, it was a good lesson for them."

She said with a sigh.

"If you'd like to become a Konohana bodyguard in the future, we can start your self-defense lessons immediately... What do you say?"

"...I don't have any plans for that right now, so I'll pass."

"I see. That's a shame."

A shame... Shizune-san is a hard person to read, but I felt like she was being genuine just now. Huh... actually, that might not be bad. It's a career path worth considering.

After I finished Hinako's bath duty, I returned to my room and began preparing for tomorrow's classes.

"My brain is getting tired."

I set my pen on my notebook and stretched a little. It was 11 PM. I had been studying almost all day.

"...No, this is when I have to push through."

I picked up my pen again and turned the textbook page. Tennouji-san had praised my good study habits, so I had to focus and work hard. I sometimes think about how diligent I've become. The level of the people at Kiou Academy is so high that I've been influenced by them and developed a habit of studying every day. At first, I only studied because Shizune-san told me to, but now I do it of my own will. She must have noticed, as she's stopped nagging me to "prep" and "review" lately.

I'd never studied this hard before. Back then, I wasn't trying for anyone else, or even for myself. I was just coasting through high school.

"I wonder what... they're doing now?"

I thought back to my relationships before I became an attendant. Once things settle down, I'd like to go see them. Just then, someone knocked on my door.

"Come in."

The door opened, and Hinako walked in.

"Huh... Hinako?"

"Mhm." Hinako made a small sound. I was surprised.

"You came here by yourself? I'm amazed you didn't get lost."

"Ngh... How rude. This is my house."

No, no, I'm amazed you can say that with a straight face. One mustn't forget that if left alone, this girl can't even navigate the school.

"Your room is farther than I thought... It takes thirty minutes from my room."

"There's no way it takes that long."

Were you navigating a dungeon?

"...What are you doing?"

"Prepping for tomorrow. Tennouji-san taught me a lot, but that was for the mock exam. I have to study harder to keep up with the regular classes."

I finished a section and turned to Hinako.

"Did you need something?"

"...No."

"? Then why did you come?"

When I asked, she puffed her cheeks out slightly.

"...Do I need a reason to come?"

"Er, well, no..."

It wasn't that she couldn't, I just didn't know how to respond. She didn't seem to want anything, so while I was curious, I started studying again.

"Nngh...~"

As I silently started writing, I heard Hinako groan. Then, with a thump, she lay down on my bed.

"I'm... sleeping here tonight."

"Huh?"

"Sleeping here."

She said, her tone slightly more forceful.

"It's farther from the dining room than your room, so it'll be inconvenient tomorrow morning. If you're going to sleep, go back to your own..."

"No~..."

She was already half-asleep. Seeing her blink drowsily, I couldn't help but smile wryly.

"Itsuki~..."

"Hm?"

"...Come here."

"...Yeah, yeah."

I finished my studying and walked over to her.

"...Pats."

She said, her eyes squinting sleepily.

"You didn't like it when I patted your head at the banquet, did you? Is it okay now?"

"...I didn't not like it."

She rolled over, turning her back to me.

"I've... been weird lately."

"Weird... Are you sick?"

"Nngh~..."

When I said that worriedly, she puffed her cheeks out again, annoyed. It seems she wasn't sick. I gently patted her head. She flinched for a second, then went still, letting me. She never used to react like that. It doesn't seem like she hates it, but I'm still curious.

"...I'm getting sleepy, too."

I muttered, sitting on the edge of the bed as I patted her head.

"...Then go to sleep."

"No, I have to drag you back to your room first..."

As I said that, I really did start to feel sleepy. I'd used my brain so much today that it must be exhausted. Before I knew it, I was assaulted by drowsiness—

"...Itsuki?"

The hand patting her head stopped, and Hinako silently propped herself up. Itsuki was breathing quietly, asleep at the edge of the bed. Hinako sat up as quietly as possible, observing his sleeping face.

"...This might be the first time I've seen him sleep."

Because she was always so tired from her act, she fell asleep at every opportunity. So, while others often saw her sleeping face, she rarely saw anyone else's.

"Is he tired...?"

Come to think of it, Itsuki had looked more tired than usual while studying today. Hinako understood the feeling of wanting to sleep when tired, so she decided to let him rest. She glanced at the stationery spread out on the desk. Hinako's eyes scanned the notebook filled with equations, and then she inadvertently spotted something.

"This is... the Attendant Manual?"

She picked up the thick manual and opened it. Originally, there was no such thing, but the attendant turnover rate was so high that verbal handovers became too time-consuming, so one was made. Important points were marked with sticky notes and highlighters. When Hinako flipped to the free-write pages, she saw a list of her favorite ice pop flavors. A strong, sharp handwriting next to it emphasized, "Buy if possible, stock in the room fridge!" At that moment, Hinako felt a sharp pain in her chest. But before the pain could fade, someone else entered the room.

"Ojou-sama?"

Shizune walked over, a puzzled look on her face.

"The door was open, so I came in to see..."

"...Shh—"

Hinako put a finger to her lips and glanced at the sleeping Itsuki. Shizune saw her signal and immediately understood the situation.

"My goodness. Falling asleep before Ojou-sama. What an unfit attendant."

Shizune said this, but there was no anger in her expression. She, too, must have recognized Itsuki's recent efforts. Itsuki was fundamentally a serious person. Even if Shizune didn't point it out, he would surely reflect on his own when he woke up.

"Ojou-sama, if you'll allow me, I will escort you back to your room."

"...Mhm." Hinako nodded and left the room with Shizune.

"Shizune."

"Yes."

"I... am strange."

She whispered.

"I was so happy that Itsuki became my attendant... but when I think about him taking care of me, sometimes I feel unhappy."

"...Unhappy?"

Not long ago, Shizune would have suspected Itsuki was the problem, but she didn't think that now. After all, they had been working under the same roof for over a month, and she knew Itsuki was a loyal and honest person.

"Are you dissatisfied with Itsuki-san as your attendant?"

"...No."

Hinako shook her head, but her expression was faintly anxious. When they arrived at her bedroom, Shizune opened the door, and Hinako slowly walked in.

"I'm not... but I don't like just that."

She said, climbing into bed. She placed an arm over her eyes and revealed her worries:

"The reason Itsuki does what I say... is it because it's his job?"

Hearing this, Shizune finally understood the true nature of Hinako's anxiety. A feeling of affection welled up in her, but she firmly suppressed any change in her expression.

"Please rest assured."

Shizune said in a gentle voice:

"The reason Itsuki-san is by your side is not just because of his job."

"...Really?"

"Yes. If you just wait a little longer, you will understand."

Itsuki had originally taken the attendant job simply because he was broke. However, if it were just for money, he wouldn't have gone so far as to defy Kagen to get his job back. Regardless of the past, Itsuki's feelings were different now. He was currently carrying out his duties with an emotion separate from his work. Hinako was just very dense about the important things. If she just thought about it a little, she'd understand immediately.

"Still, this is a first. You've never consulted me about your personal feelings before."

"...Really?"

"Yes."

Hinako went

"Hmm~?"

and tilted her head, thinking back. Seeing this, Shizune smiled. She felt as if she were witnessing her daughter's growth.

"...This is not good."

I don't intend to become a mother just yet. She covered Hinako, who had drifted off to sleep, with a blanket and left the room.

A week had passed since Tennouji-san and I started our after-school study sessions.

"Good morning."

I opened the classroom door and greeted my classmates. The students near the door smiled kindly and returned my greeting. It gave me a warm feeling as I sat down. Lately... just a little bit... I feel like I'm fitting in at Kiou Academy. Part of it is just getting used to it, but the catalyst was probably Tennouji-san's etiquette lessons. As I learned more, I realized just how much the students here value courtesy. And the desire to respond to their efforts had, before I knew it, become part of my own motivation.

"Hey, Tomonari."

"Tomonari-kun, morning~"

Taisho and Asahi-san walked over.

"Tomonari, what have you been up to with Tennouji-san lately?"

Taisho suddenly asked.

"Hehehe... there have been lots of sightings~? I hear you two are meeting every day after school."

Asahi-san added, full of interest. I sensed they were building a hypothesis that was far from the truth, so I decided to clear it up.

"Actually, I've been having her teach me etiquette."

"Etiquette?"

Asahi-san asked, and I nodded.

"It's like an extension of the study group we had before."

"Aww, what~? I thought you were trying to marry into a rich family."

"Unfortunately, no."

Asahi-san's guess was way off. I denied it flatly.

"Oh, speak of the devil."

Taisho said, looking toward the classroom door. I followed his gaze and saw Tennouji-san standing there. She looked at us—no, at me—and beckoned. I wonder what's up? I thought, walking over to her.

"Tennouji-san, good morning. What's wrong?"

"Good morning. I have something to discuss with you."

Discuss?

"I forgot until today, but the cafe we usually go to has a scheduled holiday. And it's today."

"Ah... I see."

We usually held our study sessions at the cafe next to the dining hall. Since it served dishes from various countries, it was the perfect place to practice table manners.

"So today we'll just study somewhere else... and skip the etiquette lesson?"

"I considered that, but I have a proposal."

She said.

"Would you like to come to my house?"

"...What?"

Hearing the sudden suggestion, I tilted my head in confusion.

"When learning etiquette, your greatest enemy is habit. No matter how nervous you are at the beginning, once you get used to the situation, anyone will naturally calm down... But that calmness is just familiarity, not the composure that comes from mastering etiquette."

"That's probably true."

"Right. So, to prevent you from getting too comfortable, I think it's best to change locations periodically. This is a good opportunity. Would you like to have our study session at my house?"

She explained, matter-of-factly. Faced with this proposal, I—

"...And that's the situation. What do you think?"

Lunchtime. Hinako and I met at the old student council building as usual, and I told her about Tennouji-san's proposal. The Konohana family had said they wouldn't interfere with my relationships at school, but as Hinako's attendant, it only seemed right to ask her opinion first.

"...Ngh."

"Hinako?"

"Nngh, nngh..."

She was, for once, thinking very seriously. Frankly, I didn't think she needed to agonize over it this much... but she had her arms crossed and looked very troubled.

"...Itsuki."

"Hm?"

"...........................Are you staying overnight?"

She asked nervously, for some reason unable to meet my eyes.

"No, I plan to come back today."

"............Okay, good."

She said that, but her expression was complicated.

"Itsuki... are your study sessions with Tennouji-san fun?"

"They're okay. She's the type who doesn't go easy on you, even if she knows you, so I'm able to learn naturally..."

"...I see."

It's rare to find someone who can be strict even with people they know. Normally, the desire "not to be disliked" would win out, but not for her. It's probably because she has unshakeable confidence in herself, so she can follow through with her actions regardless of what others think. Her dignified behavior was something I genuinely admired, even setting aside my current position. As I was thinking that, Hinako tugged on the hem of my uniform.

"...You're my attendant."

"Huh?"

"Itsuki... You're... my attendant."

She stared straight at me from extremely close range. Her perfectly shaped nose was right in front of me, making me a little flustered. We live under the same roof, but for some reason, she smells nice.

"...I know."

I let out a slow breath, suppressing the stirring in my heart. Then, I looked at the bento box in my hand and said:

"I know. So... stop secretly putting your vegetables in my bento."

"............You noticed."

My mistress is quite the sly one.
