Rich Girl Caretaker Vol. 8 Chapter 2
The Interview Begins
It was the day after I had been called to the Student Council Room.
"Tomonari-kun, good morning."
Just as I was about to walk into the Class A classroom, a female student spoke to me.
"I'm with the Student Council's interview team. I normally serve as the Vice President. I will be following you all day today. I look forward to working with you."
"I'll be in your care."
She was the one who had served us tea in the Student Council Room yesterday.
She held a folder, and a small camera lens peeked out from her breast pocket. How should I put it... she looked just like a reporter.
"Class is about to start. I'll be observing from the side, so please just act as you normally would."
"Do you not have to attend class, Vice President?"
"Attending class isn't necessary during an interview."
This interview was more official than I had expected.
Still, I did as the Vice President said and made a point to act normally. After all, the purpose of this interview was to show the students my true, unvarnished self.
First period was chemistry. The Class C homeroom teacher walked into the room.
The lesson proceeded smoothly, with the students diligently taking notes. Even with the Management Tournament burnout still lingering, everyone was able to switch their mindset for class. As expected of Kiou Academy students, they were all very serious.
(I used to desperately pray not to be called on by the teacher...)
Every time I was called on to solve a problem in front of the class, I was a nervous wreck. I thought I'd never be able to shake that feeling at Kiou Academy—
"Alright, for question seven... Tomonari-kun."
"Yes."
Having been called on, I stood up and wrote the answer on the blackboard.
"Correct. You've been studying hard."
"Thank you."
My classmates applauded lightly, and I returned to my seat.
As long as I properly prepared and reviewed, there was no reason to be nervous. In fact, I wanted to be called on. This change surprised even me. Just gaining that confidence made class feel more interesting. If I hadn't studied so hard to catch up, I probably never would have learned this.
I glanced toward the hallway and saw the Vice President writing on the paper in her folder.
I was hoping for a positive evaluation, but if I kept staring, I'd look like I wasn't paying attention. I turned my gaze back to the blackboard.
The lesson continued smoothly until the break.
(Next up is PE...)
I looked to the hallway and met the Vice President's eyes. She nodded. It seemed she would be observing my PE class as well.
Since she wanted to observe my "normal" behavior, it would be weird to strike up a conversation. I just gave her a nod and headed to the gym with Taisho and the others.
Second period, PE, began.
We had already done badminton and basketball. Today, we were starting table tennis. After a simple rally and serve practice, we split off to play singles and doubles matches.
"Tomonari, now!"
"Got it!"
I was paired with Taisho for doubles. Responding to his shout, I smashed the ball hard. The ping pong ball slammed onto the table and rolled to the wall.
"Nice shot! You can do anything, man!"
"Just a lucky shot."
Since we won the match, I high-fived Taisho and we walked over to the spectator seats.
Since Kiou Academy is full of rich kids, I'd assumed we'd never have any intense sports classes. I couldn't have been more wrong. From ball sports to martial arts to track, we do a round of everything in PE. As a result, the students here possess not only the refined sensibilities of their upbringing, but also a tough resilience forged by a demanding curriculum.
"It's gotten cooler lately, but you still get hot when you move around."
"Yeah."
Taisho and I wiped our sweat with towels.
Kiou Academy students don't wipe sweat on their clothes. Everyone brings a separate towel for it. That part, at least, is very "elite school."
As I was wiping my forehead, Kita came over.
"Tomonari-kun, I was wondering if you could teach me the trick to your serve..."
"Oh, sure... You should probably toss the ball a little lower..."
I've been relatively good at sports ever since I transferred, but it's only recently that people have started asking me for advice.
Being good at sports is completely different from being approachable for help. It's only after people got to know me that they started asking. Thinking about it, that makes the student council's report on candidate "character" a very effective idea.
However, I'm not the only one who's become more relied upon after people got to know them. The person who's changed the most... is definitely Narika.
I watched the girls' game. Narika was in the middle of a doubles match.
"Ah!?"
The girl partnered with Narika swung and missed the ball.
Her face went pale, clearly upset that she'd dragged Narika down.
"M-Miyakojima-san, I'm sorry...!"
"It's fine. Don't worry about it."
Narika said, giving a reassuring smile to her partner, who was bowing deeply.
"You were trying your best. There's no shame in that."
Hearing this, the girl's cheeks flushed red.
"...Onee-sama."
Narika went to get the ball, and the girl just stared at her back, completely mesmerized.
And she wasn't the only one. The other girls waiting on the sidelines were also staring at Narika in a daze.
"I don't know why... but lately, whenever I look at Miyakojima-san, I feel... breathless..."
"Me too... What is this feeling...?"
I chose to ignore the conversation I'd overheard.
Narika had grown so much through the Management Tournament, she was starting to disrupt the social order of the school.
◆
Fourth period ended, and it was time for the lunch break—
The bell rang, and at the same time, a jolt of nervousness went through me.
(Alright—what am I going to do?)
I looked to the hallway and saw the Vice President watching me silently. I had hoped she'd leave for lunch, but it seemed she was planning to stare at me through the break, too.
I'm completely used to school life now, but there's still one thing I struggle with.
"Tomonari, you going somewhere else today?"
"...Sorry about that."
I grabbed my lunch, planning to slip out, but Taisho and Asahi walked over.
"Everyone's been talking about you, you know. Wondering where you go for lunch..."
"There are a few theories. One is that you're off studying in secret. Another is that you're a picky eater and don't want people to see... And another one is that you're actually a spy and go report to headquarters."
Headquarters? Where's that? To be honest, it wouldn't be surprising if there was a spy at Kiou Academy, but at least it's not me.
"All wrong. Honestly, my family business has been busy, so I've been helping out."
"Oh, is that all?"
I used the excuse and left the classroom.
And then, I—broke into a run down the stairs.
"Ah—Wait!? T-Tomonari-kun!?"
The Vice President, who had been observing from the hall, cried out in surprise. I pretended not to hear, ran through the corridors, and headed for the old student council building.
When I reached the roof of the old student council building, Hinako was already waiting.
"Itsuki... Good work..."
"Sorry, I'm a little late."
I sat down next to Hinako and opened my lunch box.
"Ah..."
I picked up a piece of food with my chopsticks and slowly brought it to Hinako's mouth.
She can't interview this. If our relationship was exposed, I could just forget about the election. After feeding Hinako the slice of meat, I thought for a moment.
"Itsuki, what's wrong...?"
"Nothing... I was just thinking it's about time I came up with a new excuse."
My classmates keep asking me where I go. I always make up excuses like "relaxing" or "catching up on sleep," but I'm running out of material.
"Maybe you should stop coming here during the interview period...?"
"...No. I like relaxing with you like this. Let's keep doing it."
Hearing me say that, Hinako smiled.

"I think so, too... Meeting in secret like this... it feels like something out of a shoujo manga. It's fun."
For Hinako, this must feel like a special, out-of-the-ordinary moment.
After that, I let Hinako rest her head on my lap, and we both just spaced out. She fell asleep almost immediately, so I just looked up at the sky, thinking about the classes for the rest of the day.
When the clouds covered the sun, I checked the time on my phone.
"It's about time to head back."
"Mm."
We always leave the old student council building twenty minutes before the warning bell. There's still time, but I can't risk Hinako being late, so this timing is perfect.
We left the building, and my eyes were naturally drawn to the courtyard on the side. I walked over to the pond in the center, and the koi surfaced.
"Come to think of it, you used to feed the fish here."
"Mm... It's relaxing."
When I first became her caretaker, Hinako would go to the school store after class, buy bread, and feed the crumbs to the koi.
"I think you said you wanted to be a koi."
"I might have..."
Hinako had said something like,
"I'm so jealous of the fish... they just open their mouths and food appears—"
"But I don't think that anymore... Because of you, I've changed a lot."
"Because of me?"
"Yes... I've changed so much."
Hinako said, placing a hand on her chest.
"Thanks to you, Itsuki, my heart... has probably had two big bangs."
"...That much, huh."
Two explosions big enough to create a new universe, apparently. But Hinako had changed. She interacted with people more, and she was more expressive. If I was part of the reason, I'd be honored.
The koi ignored our conversation and just swam leisurely. The scene was exactly as it was the first time I came here... It felt kind of healing. In an environment where everything changes so fast, it's nice to see something stay the same.
"Oh, speaking of which, I think a past student council built this pond."
"Really...?"
"I visited an IT company during the tournament, and the CEO, who's an alum, told me."
The fact that the student council had the power to build something this big is surprising, even if they got approval from everyone else.
Hearing this, Hinako suddenly seemed lost in thought.
"...Itsuki, do you really not want to be president...?"
"Uh, why do you ask?"
Hearing my counter-question, Hinako's starry eyes burst with a brilliant light, and she said:
"If you become president... I want you to build a napping room!"
"...A what?"
"A room with just soft, fluffy pillows! And... an all-you-can-eat potato chip service!"
"...That all sounds difficult to implement."
Actually, a nap room might be surprisingly practical. It's a long shot, but if I become vice president, I'll try suggesting it to the president.
As we were talking, someone walked over from the direction of the school building. It was the Vice President.
"Tomonari-kun, I've been looking all over for you!"
The Vice President glared at me.
"Really. If you don't want your privacy invaded, just tell us. We don't want to invade your privacy; we can be flexible."
"S-Sorry..."
So I just had to tell her first... I thought that would just make her more suspicious, but I guess I was overthinking it. After scolding me, the Vice President seemed to have vented her frustration and looked at Hinako next to me.
"By the way, did you and Konohana-san meet here by chance?"
"...Yes."
"...Really?"
Aren't you the one digging into my privacy now? I thought so, but she had an apologetic look on her face, as if she felt she had to ask even if she shouldn't.
As I was wondering how to answer, Hinako spoke up.
"It's true. I was on a walk and happened to run into Tomonari-kun. We were just chatting leisurely on our way back."
"...I see."
Hinako, in her Ojou-sama Mode, gave off such an innocent air that the Vice President immediately backed down.
The three of us then headed for the classroom. On the way, I whispered to Hinako so the Vice President couldn't hear.
"Sorry. I wish I could have handled that better."
"It's not just your problem..."
Hinako shook her head, telling me it was fine.
"Besides... if I caused some weird rumor about you... it could affect the election..."
Does "scandal" just mean "hanging out with a girl"? I didn't think it was a big deal... No, wait. Considering the prim-and-proper atmosphere at Kiou Academy, even a hint of a romantic entanglement could blow up into a huge incident.
"Thanks for being so considerate."
"Mm. I am a woman of self-control...!"
Hinako said, puffing her chest out proudly.
We entered the school building and walked down the hall. Just then—Tennouji-san's voice drifted from the 2-C classroom.
"I see! So your recent success is all thanks to Tomonari-kun...!"
"Yes! Just as you say!"
"You're grateful to Tomonari-kun for solving your problem...! Does this mean you two have formed a deep bond!?"
"Just as you say! That's completely correct!"
Tennouji-san, facing her own interview, was nodding enthusiastically.
"..."
Hinako saw this, and the light vanished from her eyes. She turned to the Vice President with a dead-serious expression and said:
"...Can I correct what I just said?"
"Huh? Ah, yes."
"Actually, Tomonari-kun and I spend every lunch break together in private..."
"In p-private...!?"
Hey, hey, hey. What happened to the "woman of self-control"...?
◆
After school. Students were leaving, and I was packing my own bag.
"Tomonari-kun."
As I was getting ready to leave, Kita came over to talk.
"Kita-kun, what's up?"
"I thought this book might be good for you, so I wanted to lend it to you."
Kita said, handing me a technical IT book.
But when I saw the cover, I hesitated. It looked like a highly technical book for engineers. In the past, I would have borrowed it without a second thought, but now that I'm aiming to be a consultant, this is a low-priority field for me.
"Thank you, but I'm probably not going to..."
"I think it could be helpful for you."
Just as I was about to politely decline, Suminoe-san spoke up.
"You can't tell from the cover, but it's less a technical book and more a book for managers. I think it has a lot of content you'd find useful."
"Oh, really..."
Hearing that, I flipped to the table of contents and saw that it did, in fact, cover a lot more than the cover implied.
Kita looked at Suminoe-san and said:
"Er, as expected, Suminoe-san, you read these kinds of books too, huh."
"Yes, my family's business is often involved in upstream R&D... You, on the other hand, Kita-kun, are focused on the technical studies."
"Yeah. My company's selling point is our technical skill. My parents drilled it into me... if I don't have the skills myself, I can't lead..."
"I see. That's strict, but it sounds worthwhile."
Hearing Suminoe-san say that, Kita beamed and nodded.
Kita himself didn't seem to feel inferior; he seemed to think the effort was worth it.
"—Right, just like that. The book is basically about how, even within the IT industry, organizational management differs completely based on the company's mission. For you, Tomonari-kun, it's well worth a read."
"That's very helpful advice."
Suminoe-san had given me a summary of the book in the middle of their chat. I nodded to her in thanks.
"Kita-kun, I'd like to borrow this book, please."
"Mm."
Kita watched me take the book, then shared a faint smile with Suminoe-san.
"Suminoe-san, you're cheering for Tomonari-kun, aren't you."
"Wha!? That's not true at all!"
Suminoe-san vehemently denied it.
Everyone's eyes turned to her. Noticing this, Suminoe-san cleared her throat and glossed over it... She's not on Hinako's level, but she also puts on quite an act.
"...Whatever. He's the opponent who beat me. I just don't want to see him make a fool of himself."
"No, um, I keep saying this, but it wasn't a competition..."
"Oh, please... Being too modest is just another form of arrogance, you know!"
"That's my line..."
If I just went along with it and acted triumphant about this "victory," I have a feeling Suminoe-san would fly into a rage.
Just then—
"Ohohoho! This young lady has graced you with her presence!"
"Eek!?"
I heard a familiar voice, and Suminoe-san let out a strange yelp and jumped.
The girl with the golden ringlets, Tennouji-san, walked into the classroom.
"Why, Suminoe-san, hello there."
"H-H-H-H-Hello, hello...!"
Suminoe-san still gets nervous around Tennouji-san... because she just likes her that much.
Tennouji-san walked straight over to me and said:
"Tomonari-kun, I've come to invite you to a tea party."
"Huh? Right now?"
"Yes. Is that a problem?"
"No, I can make it..."
Since it was a tea party, the other members would be there. I looked at Hinako, our eyes met, and she nodded. Luckily, Taisho and Asahi were still in the room. They must have overheard, because they nodded too. That just left Narika...
"On that note, Miyakojima-san is coming too."
As expected of Tennouji-san, efficient as always.
"So that's everyone... Still, this feels a bit sudden."
"Because all our 'tea parties' during the tournament were just strategy meetings. I want to have an actual, relaxing tea party."
It's true, during the tournament, we were just exchanging intel, and the conversations were always intense. A tea party should be more relaxed.
"Besides..."
Tennouji-san glanced toward the hallway. The student council members were standing there, watching us.
"...The student council seems to know about the 'Noble Tea Party' name. I figured we could let them see it, to help with their interviews."
"I see..."
The 'Noble Tea Party' was the name for our group of six—me, Hinako, Tennouji-san, Narika, Taisho, and Asahi—or maybe it just referred to our gatherings. I don't know who named it, but it had spread through the school. From what Tennouji-san just said, it seemed even the third-years had heard of it.
Our tea parties are held irregularly, so we might not have had one during the election period. But... I hope I'm not being arrogant, but since we're apparently so well-known, other students must be curious. If the President's "Daily Life" report didn't mention the 'Noble Tea Party' at all, students might be disappointed. Tennouji-san must have realized that.
Since the interview is about showing who we are, I'd decided to just be natural. And we do actually have tea parties, so it's not like we're staging it.
"That's a good idea."
"Right?"
Hearing that, Tennouji-san puffed out her chest proudly.
Just as I was thinking, Alright, let's head to the cafe... a girl from our class walked over.
"U-Um, Tennouji-san."
"My, what is it?"
The Class A girl nervously addressed Tennouji-san.
"Um, during the Management Tournament... did you... by any chance... go on a date with Tomonari-kun!?"
"A da—!?"
Her golden ringlets bounced. My own heart gave a hard thump. What? What...!?
"Tomonari-kun."
Suminoe-san shot me an ice-cold glare.
"Please... explain... carefully. While I... still... have my composure."
Every muscle in Suminoe-san's body must have been tensed. Her movements were incredibly stiff as she walked over. Uh oh. I feel like my life is in danger.
"No, um, you've misunderstood. It's not like that at all—"
"But I saw you! I saw you two at the art museum!"
Just as I was trying to explain, the girl shouted. The classroom erupted in murmurs. Hearing that, the memory resurfaced in my mind.
I had been way too stressed during the tournament, and Tennouji-san had dragged me out to relax. We went to an art museum, a cafe, and we even danced...
"..................Ah."
"Ah!? You just said 'Ah'!"
Suminoe-san grabbed me by the collar. Seeing this, the girls in the class let out excited "Kyaa!" shrieks. I could hear "A love triangle!?" and "Forbidden love!?" being whispered. Oh, crap. Now Suminoe-san is being dragged into this.
The atmosphere had turned horribly awkward. Cold sweat poured down my back.
"Tomonari... looks like we've got our theme for the tea party..."
"My, my... Tennouji-san sure picked a good time for this..."
Taisho and Asahi came over, smirking. They both had the look of kids who'd just found a new toy.
"Tomonari-kun."
Hinako called my name in her clear, pleasant voice. Hinako, in full Ojou-sama Mode, gave me a benevolent smile and said:
"Your time for relaxing and enjoying school life... is over."
Her merciless words stabbed me in the heart.
But Hinako was the one who said I could relax... I have to clear this up. If I don't, I'll be living on pins and needles at school and at the mansion.
◆
"—So, in other words, I was just accompanying Tomonari-kun to help him relax."
As soon as the tea party began, Tennouji-san quickly cleared up the misunderstanding.
"Hm... well, if that's the case, I guess I can understand."
"That truth is very much in Tennouji-san's style."
Taisho and Asahi were satisfied, and Tennouji-san let out a breath of relief. Hinako and Narika had understood from the beginning, but it took a while to clear things up with Taisho and Asahi. To be honest, the misunderstanding was long gone; they were just playing dumb for fun. Still, thinking about it calmly, the fact that they can now get along so well with Tennouji-san is a change that would have been unimaginable in the first semester.
I took a sip of the tea on the table and found it had gone cold. It's not so bad if you think of it as us getting along so well, talking so much we forgot to drink. But, because this topic was so nerve-wracking, I'd rather not go through it a second time.
"That's how it is, so please be careful when you write the report!"
"Understood!"
Tennouji-san said this to the student council officer observing us from the next table. I thought the same thing when I passed the 2-C classroom during lunch, but this officer is really energetic. The student council members might also be full of unique personalities, but I guess all students at Kiou Academy are eccentric in their own way.
"Tennouji-san, sorry for making you explain everything..."
"The cause was with me, so it's fine... I don't regret what I did, but I completely forgot about the tradition that follows the Management Tournament."
Tennouji-san, as if she'd completed a great task, drank her tea while covered in a cold sweat. Her words made me feel uneasy. What tradition that follows the Management Tournament?
"I'm sure you've noticed, but after the Management Tournament ends, everyone's mood gets really lax, right?"
Asahi, seeming to notice my confusion, explained.
"At our school, it's an old tradition that romantic incidents happen easily right after the tournament. Besides the mental laxness, people's relationships also change because of the tournament... Everyone can't help but think things like, 'Come to think of it, that person's actually kind of cool...'"
"I-I see..."
The Management Tournament was a huge event. I'd experienced for myself how relationships changed because of it. Every student at this school must know about this tradition Asahi explained. That's why, during this period, whenever they hear any gossip about relationships, they immediately connect it to the tradition and get all excited. In other words, the students of Kiou Academy are thirsty for dramatic love stories right now.
"It might not be convincing coming from me, the one who caused the commotion, but during this time, some students get swept up in the mood and lose control. Please be careful, everyone."
Taisho and Asahi nodded at Tennouji-san's warning. However, there were two people—me and Narika—who discreetly met each other's gaze. Romantic incidents happen easily after the tournament. Some students get swept up in the mood and lose control.
(...Is she talking about us?)
Narika must have reached the same conclusion, because her face turned bright red. It seems the two of us, without realizing it, had been dancing to the tune of tradition.
"...My, Tomonari-kun, Miyakojima-san, what's wrong?"
"N-n-n-n-nothing. Nothing at all."
"R-Right... Nothing... at all."
No matter how you looked at it, our reactions were suspicious, but Tennouji-san just tilted her head in confusion.
"Even setting romance aside, relationships really changed because of the tournament."
Asahi said.
"That's true. I've been seeing Miyakojima-san being admired by a lot of students lately."
"Y-Yes, that's right. My surroundings have changed. Even I can feel it... I'm very grateful."
Narika said, her face beaming with joy. To be honest, it's gone beyond just 'admiration'... but no need to say that out loud. In reality, Narika's relationships didn't just change on their own. It was because she changed that others changed in response. This was the result of her hard work.
"Narika, all that hard work paid off."
I said this while looking at Narika unconsciously. I wanted to tell her, so much so that I forgot the awkwardness between us. Narika's almond eyes widened for a moment, and then she smiled gently.
"Yes... thanks to you."
Narika and I looked at each other. It wasn't awkward. In fact, there was a peaceful atmosphere—
"...Hey, what's this vibe? Tomonari-kun, don't tell me it wasn't Tennouji-san, but you and Miyakojima-san who have a thing—"
"S-Speaking of change, Konohana-san has too, right!?"
Asahi's intuition was sharp. I quickly tried to change the subject. Hinako was staring at me, her gaze saying, "You're using me to dodge the subject, aren't you..." I apologized profusely in my head.
"Konohana-san has definitely changed. Just looking at our class, I feel like a lot more people are talking to her now."
Taisho, not sensing anything, agreed with me.
"...Yes, as you say, people have been coming to talk to me more often."
Hinako read the room and went along with the change of topic. Hinako, I'm sorry. And Taisho, thank you. But in truth, I did want to talk about Hinako's change. After the tournament, her relationships had also shifted.
"From what I've heard, the reason was the meeting I held late in the tournament... Looking back, I'd never really relied on everyone like that, so I think that opportunity brought us closer."
"Mhm, the class was talking about it. They said they were honored to be relied on by Konohana-san."
Asahi said with a nod. The "meeting" she referred to was, without a doubt, the one Hinako held to rebuild Konohana Motors after the recall cover-up. Hinako is a useless girl at home who always borrows others' strength, but in the classroom, she rarely relies on anyone. To protect her "perfect ojou-sama" image, she had to solve problems herself. The other students must have been happy to be relied on by her. As her caretaker, I understood that feeling well. Being relied on by someone who usually carries so much responsibility is an honor. So, the other students now probably felt, more or less, the same way I did. We want to stand on equal footing with Hinako Konohana—that's what they must have thought.
"Nngh... If Hinako Konohana learns how to manage people, my unique patent will be..." Tennouji-san muttered, disgruntled. The strength that Hinako lacked and Tennouji-san possessed... I'd told her at the beach that it was leadership. I still believe that, but depending on Hinako's growth, that might change.
"As a child of the Konohana family, I've realized there is still much I must learn. I must do my best so that I don't lose to any of you here."
Hinako gave a brilliant smile, as if she were radiating a holy light.
"Oh, ooh... So holy..."
"Konohana-san... is an angel after all..."
Taisho and Asahi, like devout believers, put their hands together and began to worship Hinako. In reality, though, Hinako will probably never develop leadership charisma like Tennouji-san. Because she has no interest in it. She's inherently bad with people. I can clearly picture a lazy, degenerate Hinako saying,
"Managing people sounds like a pain, I don't wanna..."
◆
"Well then, see you all!"
"Yep, see you Monday."
Asahi waved and got in her car. Hinako, smiling, nodded her goodbye. After the tea party, everyone got into their respective family cars and headed home. Hinako and I were also about to go home—
"I-Itsuki!"
Just as we were walking toward the school gate, Narika called out to me.
"Th-Th-Th-Th-Th-That is, I have something I need to talk to you about...!"
"O-Okay, I understand."
Narika wasn't acting like her usual self, and I, also a bit confused, agreed. I had a vague... idea of what she wanted to say. I looked at Hinako beside me and said:
"Konohana-san, um..."
Narika probably wanted to talk alone, so I had to ask Hinako to leave. Hinako must have sensed this, as she nodded silently and said:
"Well then, you two, I'll be going."
I exchanged glances with Hinako as she bowed her goodbyes. You can head back first, I signaled with my eyes. Hinako gave a small nod and walked out the gate. Left behind, Narika and I moved to a corner of the athletic field. I gazed out at the field, stained by the sunset, looked at Narika's face, and asked:
"Narika, you said you had something to tell me... It's about that, isn't it?"
"Y-Yes, about what happened after the Management Tournament..."
Just as I thought... It was the reason the atmosphere between us had become so awkward. Narika had kissed my cheek—
"Um... I-I wanted to ask..."
Narika asked nervously:
"D-Do... you hate me now...?"
This question was not what I expected. It was so unexpected that my tension eased.
"...Hate you? Why...?"
"B-Because I suddenly did... that... to you...!"
Narika said, on the verge of tears.
"I've been worrying about it ever since...! I didn't think about your feelings, I just lost control...! Uuu... I-I've made a terrible mistake...!"
I froze, my mouth open, dumbfounded. ...So that's what she was thinking. We were both awkward, but the awkwardness I felt and the awkwardness she felt were a bit different. Narika was worried I hated her.
"J-Just now at the tea party, Tennouji-san said it, right? That people get swept up in the mood... Th-That was me, wasn't it...!"
I thought so too. But, to be precise, it wasn't just Narika, it was both of us...
"..................Haa."
Before calming Narika down, I calmed myself. Just now, when Narika called out to me—I thought I had to give her an answer to her confession, right here and now, and I'd tensed up. But for Narika, she wasn't even thinking that far. That kiss was sudden. But I would never hate her for it...
"...I don't hate you."
I said, looking her in the eyes. But, it was hard to say the next words. I'm not interested in you at all—that wouldn't be right. I'll forget about it—that's not even encouraging. I was actually happy—if I said that, it would sound like an answer to her confession, wouldn't it? She'd kissed me the day before yesterday. I felt bad, but even if I were to give a reply, I needed a little more time to sort out my own feelings. Given our relationship up to now, I could have just said, "Don't worry about it" and ended it... but considering our relationship now, I felt there was so much I couldn't say.
"You... you really don't hate me...?" Seeing me hesitate, Narika must have gotten worried. She asked in a trembling voice. That I didn't hate her was, without a doubt, my true feeling.
"Right. Of course."
"Th-That's... great..."
Narika let out a breath, relieved. Good, the misunderstanding is cleared up.
"But I really was surprised. I never thought you'd do that..."
I figured it was fine to tell her my honest reaction, so I said it. In reality, I was shocked. My mind went blank.
"I-I... at that time... um..."
Narika squirmed, looking like it was hard to say.
"I..." I...? "I... just couldn't help it..."
She said, her cheeks bright red, averting her gaze. Seeing her, I was suddenly struck. We're talking about something so embarrassing... My face grew hot. My face was probably just as red as Narika's. Looking at the innocent Narika, I couldn't help but feel innocent, too.
"Ah!? My-My ride is here!"
Narika suddenly pulled out her phone and said this.
"Th-Then I'm going! ...I'm so glad you don't hate me!"
Saying that, she left. I let out a quiet breath. I hadn't relaxed at all. Only after Narika left did I realize how tense I'd been.
(...Huh?)
I watched Narika's retreating back and thought:
(...What am I supposed to do?)
Narika, her worries gone, skipped happily toward the gate. She looked like she didn't have a care in the world. ...Is she not interested in my reply? I haven't answered her confession... Is it already over in her mind...?
(...No, no, no, that can't be.)
That kiss counted as a confession, right...? So I have to give her a reply, right...? But, looking at her... does she not need a reply? After all, she said she kissed me because she lost control... Could it be... Narika didn't think about what comes after at all?
(...It's possible.)
It's very possible. She's a bit... no, she's a total airhead, and she's so naive. She might not have even considered a romantic relationship between us. I couldn't help but put my hand to my forehead. If that's the case... what should I do? ...Huh? But it's better to give a proper answer, right? I don't get it anymore.
(If Narika doesn't need a reply...)
The thought suddenly made me feel relieved. But, is this relief... a form of cowardice? Is it just optimistic speculation to avoid responsibility? Or is it a kindness, so as not to hurt Narika? If she doesn't need it, I won't reply. Maybe that's its own form of sincerity.
(...No.)
That's not it. Think back. What did Narika say to me?
—I-I won't listen to your answer! But, even if you regret it, it's too late!
If she wasn't thinking about the future, she wouldn't have used the word "regret." Narika had clearly gathered all her courage. She was incredibly shy, yet she looked right at me.
—Because the one who told me to go all out—was you, Itsuki!!
Narika had shown me her feelings with all her might. The result was that kiss. There's no way she didn't think about what came after. If she hadn't, there would have been no reason to muster up that much courage. Narika is an airhead, and she's naive, but her biggest trait is her pessimism. I knew that... She'd rather not bother someone than follow her own heart.
"...Narika."
I called her name. But she was too far. She couldn't hear me. I ran toward the gate. I can still make it...!!
"—Narika!!"
I shouted at the back I'd caught up to. Narika, looking surprised, turned and walked toward me.
"I-Itsuki? What's with that urgent look—"
"—I'll give you an answer."
Hearing this, Narika's eyes widened. She looked as if I'd seen right through her... as if I'd punctured a possibility she'd hidden in a corner of her heart... She looked tense. If she didn't need it, not replying might have been its own form of sincerity. But Narika had used all her courage for me. She was always teary-eyed, confused, negative, and timid, but she had been encouraged by my words and bravely expressed her feelings. So I—must also find my courage.
"I'm still figuring things out... but I will give you an answer. So please, wait for me."
I said this, looking straight at her face.

"...Can I wait for you?"
Narika asked quietly. Her eyes, shimmering with anxiety, watched me. She spoke again:
"I understand... I'll wait."
Narika said this, and walked out of the school. This time, I watched her go in silence. I had nothing more to say. However...
(...Even I think I've chosen the hard path.)
From Narika's reaction, I think the option of not replying was definitely there. But I've made my decision. I have to sort through my own confusion and find my answer. Anyway, let's go home for today. I passed through the gate, heading for my pickup spot. But, I suddenly saw Hinako standing right there.
"Hinako? You haven't gone home—"
I muttered, but when I saw the person next to Hinako, I instinctively fell silent. She seemed to have noticed me at the same time. She gave a friendly smile and said:
"Hi, Tomonari-kun. I was waiting for you."
"...President Minato?"
President Minato was standing next to Hinako.
"I was just chatting with Konohana-san while I waited. I saw you talking with Miyakojima-san on the field. Are you finished?"
"Ah, yes. We're done..."
Why was she waiting for me?
"I forgot to give you this. Please take it."
President Minato said this, handing me a few documents. I glanced over them.
"...Self-Interview Report?"
"Yes. Like I said, on weekends, I'll have you interview yourselves. Just follow the items on there and record how you spend your day."
The first page was a blank schedule. The second was a Q&A. It looked like I just had to fill it all out.
"I gave them to the others during lunch, but you weren't in the classroom. I was going to give it to you after school, but then the 'Noble Tea Party' suddenly happened, so I waited... but then you immediately started a rendezvous with Miyakojima-san."
"Uh... sorry to keep you waiting, President."
"No, no, no, don't apologize. It just means you're popular."
President Minato must be busy, but she waited all this time. A 'rendezvous' with Narika... I couldn't deny it, so I just pretended I didn't hear it. I put the documents in my bag. President Minato looked at me and Hinako.
"I was just talking with Konohana-san... you two seem to be together a lot. I heard from the Vice President that you were together at lunch, too. You're good friends."
"Yes... that's right."
Between the tea party topic and my talk with Narika, I almost thought she was implying something else, but she probably just meant "friends." Hinako, beside me, made a "Mphf" sound, looking proud.
"You have a good eye, President."
"...? Yes, I guess so?"
"Yes."
Hinako looked satisfied, while President Minato tilted her head, confused.
"I also peeked at your tea party... How should I put it? It was more normal than I expected."
President Minato said, choosing her words carefully:
"Please don't take this the wrong way, but based on the rumors, I heard you had heated discussions about politics and military affairs, so I was surprised."
"Hahaha... I guess those rumors are out there."
I couldn't help but give a wry smile. Ikuno had said the same thing the first time we talked.
"It's really just a normal tea party, so we just chat normally."
"I see... For people like you, maybe that's exactly what's needed."
President Minato said this, glancing at Hinako next to me. The most famous student at Kiou Academy, the heiress of the Konohana Group known as the "perfect ojou-sama"—that's Hinako Konohana. With so much attention on her, just arranging a calm conversation is a major effort. But the same goes for Tennouji-san and Narika. A space where they can all gather and talk amicably is precious. The 'Noble Tea Party' might be built on this miraculous balance. Everyone must have vaguely sensed this.
"If you become vice president, is that the kind of school you want to build?"
She asked it lightly, but the question was deep. That kind of school... a school like our tea party, where we can just chat... Am I aiming to build that? I—
"No, I'm not sure yet."
I shook my head and replied.
"I hope to be vice president, so I'll leave the steering to the president."
"...I see. That's a good way to think."
Of course, if the president was about to go down the wrong path, I'd stop them. But I don't think someone like that could become president of this school. I have a few definitions of the "wrong path," but my definition of the "right path" is still vague. I don't see that as a problem. The students here are exceptional. If I become vice president, I'll just consult with whoever is elected president, and we'll decide on a direction. I don't know who will be president, but whoever it is, I will trust and support them. That is most likely my style—my nature. Seeing this, President Minato nodded, satisfied, and looked at Hinako.
"Konohana-san, can I ask you a slightly nerve-wracking question?"
"Nerve-wracking?"
"Oh, don't misunderstand. I'm the one who's nervous."
President Minato continued:
"Konohana-san, you're always being relied on by all sorts of people."
"...I won't deny that."
"In that case, have you ever relied on the student council?"
Hinako paused, then shook her head.
"No. Fortunately, I've never had to."
"I thought so... That's the reality of this school."
President Minato said with a serious expression.
"At this school, there are many famous 'big shots' besides the student council. So students don't go out of their way to ask the council for help. Rather than ask the council, whose power is limited to the school, it's more reliable to ask the Konohana heiress, whose influence extends outside the school. Unfortunately, the status of a student council officer can't win against that kind of family lineage."
Come to think of it, I'd never relied on the student council's power either. If Hinako... no, if the Konohana Group... ever got serious about exercising power within Kiou Academy, they could. The prestige of a great family can influence the school itself. If that's the case, then just as President Minato said, the student council's very existence is called into question.
"Because of this, the student council has long played a background role—but I want to change that. I've been quietly laying the groundwork."
President Minato's voice strengthened slightly.
"But my mistake was that it took more time than I thought, so I can't finish it during my term. But it should be useful for the next term... Because of that, I can't think of this next election as someone else's problem."
I don't know the details, but it seems President Minato has decided to entrust everything she's built to the next student council. I'm probably not allowed to know the details right now. It's likely a heavy responsibility only told to those who join.
"The report is due next Monday. I'm looking forward to it."
After saying this, President Minato turned and left. When I heard the story about building the pond, I was surprised the student council had that much power... but President Minato seems to feel conflicted, as if that was the only contribution they could make. ...This is intense. That said, I can't exactly exaggerate on my report. There isn't much time left. Even if I changed my entire lifestyle now, there's no guarantee I could keep it up after becoming an officer. I'll just have to record my true self in the self-interview report. I'll just focus on carefully doing what needs to be done.
"Listening to that..."
Hinako murmured quietly.
"I think I understand... what kind of vice president you want to be."
"...You think? To be honest, I haven't clearly decided."
Hearing this, Hinako shook her head.
"If you become vice president... you'll want to take care of the president, won't you?"
Now that she mentions it... maybe so. To support and guide. I do have that vision. I felt a sense of conviction in my heart. Just then, Hinako suddenly pressed up against me.
"H-Hinako?"
"...Don't forget to take care of me, too."
So that's what she was worried about...
"I would never forget."
"...Mm."
I said this in a voice no one else could hear, and Hinako, looking satisfied, moved away. I could never forget. After all, the whole reason I want to be a student council officer is to be worthy of staying by Hinako's side after we graduate. I don't think of the student council as just a stepping stone. But even so, it's important to look to the future.
"...Right, Hinako. If it's okay, can you teach me about management?"
"Management...?"
"Yeah. The tournament is over, but I want to keep studying it. If you have any reference books, I'd like to borrow them."
"Mm, okay. I have a lot. I'll look when we get back to my room."
She has a lot... I already knew it, but I saw her management skills firsthand during the tournament. That's not something you learn overnight. How many years will it take for me to catch up to the know-how she's accumulated? No, I'm probably not just "not catching up"—the gap might even be widening. Staying by Hinako's side really isn't easy. But that's exactly why... it's worth the fight.
◆
It was evening. Hinako and I were having dinner together, as usual.
"Hinako... you need to eat your vegetables."
"...You noticed."
That was close. When I let my guard down, she tries to sneak the vegetables she dislikes onto my plate. Lately, she'd given up and would eat them reluctantly, but she still tries this challenge about once every three days. Maybe I just haven't been noticing, and she's already succeeded several times.
(Hm? This seasoning...)
Today's menu was Japanese. I was eating spinach ohitashi topped with clams, like a delicacy from a high-end restaurant. I suddenly realized the seasoning felt familiar.
"Shizune-san."
"Yes."
"Is Yuri here today, by any chance?"
I asked Shizune-san, who was standing nearby. Her eyes widened slightly.
"You can tell."
Because this really tastes like Yuri's cooking. Hinako and I had just finished. Hinako usually lazes around for a while after eating, so I decided to use this time to go see Yuri.
I headed to the kitchen and saw Yuri, changed into her casual clothes and ready to go home.
"Yuri."
I called out. She turned her head and walked over.
"If you're here, you should at least say hello."
"I'm here for work, and besides, we'll see each other tomorrow."
That's true...
"Well, that and... I wanted to work hard in secret."
"Work hard?... By the way, it's Friday. Don't you have school?"
"Today was the last day of midterms. School let out in the morning, so I came here in the afternoon."
Now that she mentioned it, I remembered. Her high school's midterms were this week.
"You came to work right after finishing exams."
"...Sort of."
Yuri smiled quietly and nodded.
"You got good results in the Management Tournament, didn't you?"
"...I guess."
"What do you mean, 'I guess'? You're still so modest about your own achievements... And you're on track to join the student council, right?"
"You could say that, but I can't let my guard down."
If I don't win the coming election, it's all meaningless, so I can't relax. However, it's also true that I'm closer to the student council than before. Otherwise, President Minato wouldn't have called for me.
"Knowing all that, I figured... I can't lose to you."
Yuri whispered. There was a reason she came to work after her exams. The only reason she wasn't going to talk to me and just go home was because she felt a rivalry with me and was a little embarrassed to see me. It wasn't just me... Yuri was also giving her all for her goal. Yuri's goal was to turn her family's diner into a national chain. That's just as difficult as my dream of becoming a consultant and supporting Hinako.
"...I'll be cheering for you."
"You don't need to cheer for me. But let's both work hard."
I couldn't help but grin when she said that. Right. That's just who she is.
"By the way, what have you been up to lately?"
"Lately... I'm being interviewed."
"Interviewed?"
After I explained the situation, she got a look of keen interest.
"I see... So the student council is interviewing you."
"But really, they're just observing me from a distance..."
But maybe that's what this kind of "interview" is. They aren't recording with a camera, but they're definitely gathering all sorts of information.
"Then I have a question for you, Itsuki-san!"
Yuri held up her fist like a microphone and moved it closer.
Narika asked quietly. Her eyes, shimmering with anxiety, watched me. She spoke again:
"I understand... I'll wait."
Narika said this, and walked out of the school. This time, I watched her go in silence. I had nothing more to say. However...

"Well... if I had to say, it was using the knowledge and experience I've built up. I had a lot of help before it started, and I'm grateful."
I played along with Yuri's game.
"Speaking of people close to you, we think of Konohana-san. We hear you two had quite the back-and-forth in front of your classmates at the end! What were you feeling then?"
How do you know about that? Hinako must have told her. Those two are really close lately.
"Honestly, I was nervous. That distance was different from usual. I even felt she wasn't the Hinako I knew... But, since her personality hadn't changed, and we get along normally, it was easier to talk to her than it would have been for anyone else."
Even when Hinako was in Ojou-sama Mode, I knew her true self and what she was worried about. So, to some extent, I was able to have a conversation with the "Hinako" of that moment.
"Since you're so active, you must be getting a lot of attention!"
"Yes, I suppose so."
"Have your chances to talk to girls increased, perhaps~?"
Yuri grinned mischievously and pushed her fist-microphone even closer. I averted my gaze.
"...No, nothing like that."
"Why did you pause?"
Yuri's expression became dead serious.
"Huh? Wait? What's going on? Don't tell me I'm the only one working hard?"
"...No, I'm definitely not getting all starry-eyed over 'that kind of thing'..."
"What is 'that kind of thing'?"
This is bad. No matter what I say, I'm just digging my own grave.
"Y-You should probably get home, right? It's late..."
"Ngh...! Th-That's true...!"
The driver taking her home must be waiting. I'd successfully stalled by changing the subject, forcing Yuri to go home... I win.
"Hirano-san, the car is ready..."
Shizune-san walked over. It was time for Yuri to leave. Yuri muttered, annoyed, and I sighed in relief. However, Shizune-san looked at us—
"...You seem to be in a lively conversation. Itsuki-san, would you like to ride with her?"
"Huh?"
A helping hand, when I least expected it. But it was for Yuri, not for me. Yuri flashed a wicked grin.
"Let's ride together, shall we, Itsuki...?"
"No, uh, I've got..."
◆
"I see... so just more girls talking to you, no other developments."
"...That's right."
Inside the spacious car, I secretly wiped away cold sweat, making sure Yuri didn't see.
(...I finally dodged it.)
For now, I'd avoided talking about Narika's confession. The car stopped. I'd been so focused on parrying Yuri's interrogation that I hadn't noticed we'd arrived. Yuri thanked the driver and got out. I got out too.
"I'll walk her to the door."
The driver said simply,
"Yes, sir."
He doesn't need to be so formal with a caretaker... As expected of the Konohana house. Even the drivers are polite. After I got out, Yuri looked at me, a little surprised.
"You can just drop me here."
"No, since I'm here, I want to see the old neighborhood."
"What? You miss this place?"
"Not really. I was here during summer break, so it's not that nostalgic..."
I looked at the streetscape as we walked to Yuri's house.
"...But it feels like a place that was my home in the past."
Hearing this, Yuri tilted her head, confused. It's hard to put into words, but to explain...
"I was born and raised here... but I have this strange feeling that my current home isn't here."
"Oh... Is that a good thing?"
"Probably."
You could call it a feeling of alienation. It's nostalgic, but I also feel like I don't belong here anymore. At the end of summer break, I decided to survive in the high-class world where Hinako and the others live. As if spurred on by that resolve, I gave my all in the tournament. Maybe because of that, this place isn't my "present"... just my "past." As if to prove it, I now have new worries that my past self would never have had.
Narika... How should I respond to her feelings? I don't even know if I can accept them. Back when I lived here, I struggled just to eat every day. My mind had no room for other worries. In fact, in my first year of high school, I rejected a girl's confession, using the excuse, "I don't want to drag you down with my family situation." I can't use that excuse anymore. And that's why I'm worried.
(...Crap, Yuri's right here.)
This isn't the time to get nostalgic. If I'm not careful, all that dodging earlier will be for nothing. I need to pick my moments for worrying, I thought, and searched for a new topic.
"Anyway, how did your exams go?"
"Pretty good. I think I'll be in the top ranks again."
"That's amazing. You're balancing cooking, studies, and school."
"Of course. I don't want people to think I'm giving up on other things just for cooking... But because of that, I'm inconveniencing a lot of people. The Konohana house didn't originally have a part-time position for only two days a week."
"Huh, really?"
"Basically, you're supposed to live there. No one else just comes in on weekends like me. I feel a little bad about it."
"...Well, you're also helping at your family's shop."
It wasn't just school. Yuri was juggling three roles: school, helping the family business, and being a chef at the Konohana house. The time she could give to each was limited.
"Don't misunderstand. I feel bad, but I'm not worried about it."
"...What do you mean?"
"I'm saying, I know I'm the one who decided all this. I'm greedy, so I'll always put myself first."
Yuri said this with a bold, fearless smile. She said she puts herself first, but it didn't come off as selfish. Her goal is just that huge... Turning a local diner into a national chain is the dream of many chefs. It's an audacious ambition. Of course she has to put herself first, or she'd never achieve it. However... hearing that, I tilted my head.
"...I don't know about that."
"Huh?"
"You might be greedy... but you're also kind. You always end up compromising."
"Do I? I don't think so."
"When we used to eat fried chicken, you'd always let me have the last piece, right? You like it too, but you'd worry about me being hungry."
"That's true, but the scale is a little different."
Is it? I think a person's true nature shows in those small details.
"...It's been a while since we've just talked like this."
Yuri said, a bit emotionally.
"That's true. We see each other on weekends, but we don't have time to just chat."
"Because we're busy... And, not to go back to it, but the Konohana house bent the rules for me, so I can't exactly slack off."
In an environment where all her colleagues are live-in staff, she's the only one who seems to be part-time, with five days off a week. She already feels bad, so she can't relax in front of them... That's what Yuri must be thinking. But, as someone who does live and work at the mansion, I think Yuri is worrying for nothing. The Konohana house has a great working environment. The pay, work-life balance, and relationships are all excellent. Everyone enjoys their work, so they probably don't envy Yuri's position. If anything, they understand her hard work and are cheering for her. Still, I understand why she'd be conscious of what others think.
"...In that case, why don't you come to my room next time?"
"...Huh-yeh?"
When I offered the idea, Yuri made a weird sound.
"If you want a place to rest without worrying about what people think, you can use my room. Just ask Shizune-san where it is."
"...You, uh, you shouldn't say that to just anyone."
"I know. I'm only saying it to you."
"~~~~~! Ugh!!"
Hearing this, Yuri stomped her foot angrily for some reason. As we were chatting, we arrived at Yuri's house. Yuri's face was so red you could see it in the dark. She turned to me.
"Bye, see you tomorrow!"
"See you tomorrow."
Yuri strode away. I added one more thing to her retreating back:
"You can come over any time!"
"Ahhh—you're so annoying!! Thanks!!"
◇
Meanwhile, at the same time—
Hinako finished dinner. Her stomach was full. Normally, she would have immediately jumped onto her bed for a deep sleep, but today, she was quietly organizing her bookshelf. She pulled out several dusty books and placed them on her desk.
"Whew... That's all of them."
Hinako felt a small sense of accomplishment and wiped her forehead with the back of her hand. She had pulled out the management reference books Itsuki had asked for. There were about fifty in total. She had thrown many away, and read others as e-books, so this was all she could find in physical form. She hadn't looked at them recently, so they were dusty, but in the past, she had followed her father's orders and read every single one. Thinking of that, she felt a lingering affection... No, she didn't. It was just a massive pain.
"I wonder if Itsuki will be happy..."
Hinako pictured Itsuki's face when he received the books. He'd definitely be happy. Itsuki was so driven. He'd see the pile of books, get fired up, and dive right in. And, he was doing it for her. He was studying for her sake.
"...Ehehe."
Hinako felt the strong bond between herself and her caretaker, and a goofy smile spread across her face. It wasn't bedtime yet, but there were a lot of books. She'd give them to Itsuki tomorrow... Her great task was complete. Hinako finally flopped onto her bed and rolled around lazily. She hugged her pillow tightly, thinking back on her day with Itsuki.
—I would never forget.
Even if Itsuki became vice president, he wouldn't forget his duties as her caretaker. Hearing his serious voice, the last wisp of worry in Hinako's heart disappeared.
(Itsuki was so cool today, too...)
Hinako hugged the pillow tight. Itsuki was always cool. He showed a different cool side every day. The way he looked paying attention in class, the way he looked happily chatting with friends, the way he looked sneaking out of the classroom so they could have lunch in private, the way he looked when he gave his answer to the student council president... all of it, all of it was cool.
(...Why is Itsuki so cool?)
Hinako suddenly wondered, thinking calmly. It was a mystery. Maybe God created Itsuki with special care.
"But..."
She recalled something else. The things she'd heard at school today.
—Um, during the Management Tournament... did you... by any chance... go on a date with Tomonari-kun!?
What the girl in class had said.
—Hey, what's this vibe? Tomonari-kun, don't tell me it wasn't Tennouji-san, but you and Miyakojima-san who have a thing.
What Asahi had said at the tea party.
"Mph—..."
Hinako sometimes thought. Itsuki... has way too many rumors with girls lately, doesn't he? She'd deliberately kept quiet at the tea party, but it wasn't just Tennouji-san and Miyakojima-san. She'd heard rumors about Itsuki and many other girls. That he'd chatted with Asahi in private at a cafe, that Suminoe-san had bowed and apologized to him... all sorts of unconfirmed gossip. But she'd never heard a single rumor about him and her.
(I want to be in the rumors too...)
Hinako puffed out her cheeks, dissatisfied.
(I want people to think I have a thing with Itsuki too...!)
She hugged her pillow, got off the bed, and sat at her desk. During lunch, she'd almost told the Vice President that she and Itsuki ate together in private every day, but Itsuki had frantically stopped her...
(...Just a little bit would be fine, right?)
Just a little. Only enough for perceptive people to notice...
(For example, wearing matching outfits...)
Hinako wrote the plan in her notebook. According to shoujo manga, there was a thing called "couple's outfits." They don't wear casual clothes to school, but what about wearing them on a weekend?
(Riding in the same car to school once a week...)
Right now, they ride together near the school, Itsuki gets out first to pretend he walks, and Hinako gets dropped at the gate to show she arrived by car. But if they went to school together just once a week, it could work... In short, as long as it didn't destroy her "perfect ojou-sama" image, she could probably get away with it by making up a plausible excuse each time.
"Mmm—..."
I want to be in the rumors, too.
—Did you hear? Tomonari-kun and Konohana-san went on a date! Something like that.
—They're actually dating, aren't they!?
Something like that. She wanted to be rumored about, just like that.
(Ehehe... It's fine. As long as I don't get caught...)
I'll start next time I go to school. Hinako, having devised her plans, closed the notebook and lay down. She closed her eyes, ready for sleep—
"Pardon the intrusion."
Just then, Shizune opened the door and entered.
"It looks like it will get cold tonight. I brought you a winter blanket."
"Mm, thanks."
Hinako stayed lying down and kicked her comforter to the foot of the bed.
"Put it on me."
"I understand. But it's still a bit early to sleep..."
Shizune put the blanket on Hinako, then pulled the comforter back up over it. Shizune was about to leave, but she noticed Hinako's desk. On it was the pile of management books Hinako had just pulled out.
"Were you studying management?"
"...Not me. Itsuki asked to borrow them."
"I see."
Shizune picked up one of the books, flipping through the pages.
"I was going to suggest Itsuki-san relax until the election... but he just studies unconsciously, doesn't he."
"Mm... That's Itsuki for you."
But, that's also why Itsuki got so stressed during the tournament. The one who warned him was Tennouji-san. I let my guard down... But in that case, it had to be Tennouji-san to succeed. Hinako acknowledged that Tennouji-san had the most self-disciplined personality at Kiou Academy. She could probably spot someone about to break from stress.
(...I'm not going to thank her.)
Hinako knew she was being petty. But she was frustrated and couldn't be gracious about it. Because Tennouji-san had beaten her to it, the school was full of rumors about her and Itsuki. Even as she was lying here, people might be gossiping about them. The thought made Hinako sulk. But I'm... I'm the one closest to Itsuki...
"...Oh? What is this notebook...?"
Shizune's voice came from the desk. Notebook? Was there a notebook on the desk...?
"...Ah!?"
Hinako shot up, intending to stop Shizune immediately. But Shizune had already seen the contents. It was the notebook where Hinako had just written down all her plans. Shizune finished reading, her expression tense. She swallowed hard and said—
"...Ojou-sama, is this... your plan to destroy Itsuki-san...?"
"N-No...!!"
How could I destroy Itsuki? However, thinking about it, it did look like a destruction plan. Itsuki had blended in so well lately that Hinako had almost forgotten: he was hiding his true identity. If it was exposed that Itsuki lived in the Konohana mansion, he would be fired.
"Ojou-sama, you must not 'subtly declare ownership'."
"...'Declare ownership'?"
It was the first time Hinako had heard the term. She tilted her head.
"It means, not directly, but indirectly and casually implying to others that you have a special relationship with someone."
"I see... So there's a term for that."
I'll look it up later. It might be used in shoujo manga.
"By the way, in shoujo manga, that's usually what the villainess does."
"Ehh!?"
"It's a roundabout method, and it can even seem underhanded. If you like someone, you should be more open about it."
"Open about it..."
What's an "open" way that isn't roundabout? Like... going on a normal date? Holding hands normally...?
"Th-That... That might be... a little too soon..."
Hinako's face was burning. Just imagining it did this to her. It was too early to act. Seeing this, Shizune looked troubled.
"In any case, you absolutely must not do the things written in here."
"Okay..."
"Good grief... Honestly, with the way things are, it feels like people will get suspicious even if you do nothing. If you deliberately try to stake your claim, it'll be a disaster..."
Shizune said, putting her hand to her forehead. It was a shame to scrap her plans, but hearing Shizune, maybe it really was underhanded. I need to learn more about the art of love. Hinako thought this, and reached for the shoujo manga on her desk that Yuri had lent her.
