Rich Girl Caretaker Vol. 8 Chapter 4

What I Want to Cherish Right Now

It was Monday, during lunch break.

I pulled the documents from my bag and left the classroom. Normally, I head for the roof of the old student council building, but today I had somewhere else to be first.

I arrived at the student council room and knocked.

"Come in."

Hearing President Minato's voice, I entered.

"Excuse me. I'm here to turn in my report."

"Oh, you brought it all the way here. Thanks."

I handed the report to the president, who was sitting in her chair. Her words made me realize I could have just given it to the vice president. But I'd asked her not to interview me during lunch, and she had disappeared from the hall the moment the bell rang. She was probably being considerate... I should have just given it to her during the passing period.

"...Hm, looks fine. I'll check the details later."

The president said after a quick scan.

"Finally, I want to ask you one question."

Her gaze lifted from the report to me.

"What do you think of Tennouji-san and Miyakojima-san?"

She didn't explain the question. But asking now, it had to be about the election. Whether they were suited to be president... That wasn't a difficult question at all.

"For me, Tennouji-san is the person I aspire to be like. She's elegant, fair, and holds such high ideals... Just chasing after her shadow makes me proud. If she becomes president, I'm sure no one at this school would stray from the right path."

If it's Tennouji-san, she'll be the perfect role model for Kiou Academy. I'm certain that if she's president, the students will look up to her and live with more integrity.

"As for Miyakojima-san, I'm most excited to see her future. Her answers are always beyond my imagination, full of surprises... If she becomes president, a truly new wind will blow through this school."

Narika's potential is more exciting than anyone's. She's the kind of person who makes me want to see her give it her all. Maybe she can accomplish less on her own than Tennouji-san, but so what? People who can achieve great things all by themselves are the rare ones. If Narika becomes president, this school will move in a direction no one can predict. It might be unexpected, but it will be growth. I'm sure it would make the school a better place.

"...I see. I'll take both of your opinions into account."

President Minato nodded firmly.

"By the way, this isn't related to the election, but what do you think of Konohana-san?"

"Konohana-san..."

She'd asked it so casually, but I found myself at a loss for words. What do I think of Hinako? —She's the person I want to protect most in the world. The answer surfaced instantly, but I couldn't say that to President Minato. Publicly, Hinako was a "perfect ojou-sama" who didn't need protecting.

"...I think she's a perfect person."

In the end, I gave a painfully generic answer. President Minato seemed to think it over for a moment, then nodded.

"I've received your report... You haven't had lunch, have you? You should get back."

"Yes... Excuse me."

I gave one last bow and left the student council room. Hinako should be waiting on the roof of the old student council building. I'd better hurry.

Ten minutes after Itsuki left the student council room.

"Excuse me."

The vice president knocked and entered.

"Hey, VP. Tomonari-kun just dropped off his report."

"Oh, really? Let me see."

The vice president showed interest, so Maki handed her the report. The vice president's gaze fell on the energy drink on the desk.

"...President, are you having an energy drink for lunch again?"

"Ah, sorry. It's a busy day."

"You're the only person in this entire school who drinks that stuff."

"To overturn common sense and change the world. That's the motto of the Rakuou Group—my family."

Maki said, trying to sound cool. The vice president just sighed. The vice president read Itsuki's report in silence.

"...He's very humble."

"He is. And so earnest. At a glance, his schedule is almost boring, but you can feel a sense of fulfillment in his writing."

Cleaning, studying, exercise. He completed this incredibly proper schedule, but instead of boredom, the report conveyed a sense of accomplishment.

"Especially this last line."

The vice president looked at the bottom of the report. Itsuki's report concluded with this:

'His sincere attitude influences those around him. Seeing his hard work gives one a chance to re-evaluate oneself.'

The vice president read the line, thought for a moment, and said:

"...He didn't write this, did he?"

"Probably not, since it uses 'he'... But that's what makes it so compelling, isn't it? His character is strong enough to make someone want to write that."

Maki believed... the person who added this wanted his efforts to be fully recognized. That person must not abide Itsuki Tomonari being underestimated. It conveyed a feeling of love that transcended friendship.

"I also read the weekday interview reports you shared on Friday. Itsuki-kun has fit in so well, you'd never know he was a transfer student."

"I know. He had some gaps when he first transferred, but he's caught up on his studies, and his classmates often rely on him in P.E."

It seemed the vice president also had a high opinion of Itsuki Tomonari.

"Did you do the character interviews?"

"Yes, I was just about to turn them in."

The vice president handed Maki a stack of papers.

"I asked four of his close classmates about his character. The results are on the report—"

The vice president had interviewed Itsuki Tomonari's friends.

Yusuke Kita's response: 'Uh, he's a straightforward and excellent guy.'

Karen Asahi's response: 'Hmm... He's driven, works hard, is surprisingly knowledgeable, and he's fun!'

Katsuya Taisho's response: 'I think he's strict with himself, reliable, and has real grit.'

And Chika Suminoe's response: 'He seems polite, but he's surprisingly competitive... Still, he often puts himself on the line for others. He has low self-esteem.'

Chika Suminoe had casually pointed out a potential problem. It might not be true, but Itsuki had clearly acted in a way that would make his friends think that.

(...I have a few things I'd like to ask him.)

Maki mused, then looked back at the vice president.

"Thank you. This is very helpful."

She set the interview papers aside.

"So that's Tomonari-kun... Did you read the other two reports?"

"Ah, yes. I heard they were turned in this morning, so I came by during the passing period to read them."

The reports were left in plain sight, as Maki had told the officers to read them at their convenience. The VP had made a special trip.

"Tennouji-san and Miyakojima-san are both highly praised."

"They are. Tennouji-san always was, and Miyakojima-san gained a lot of respect after the sports festival. She was a bit unstable before that..."

"Miyakojima-san is the type to be misjudged by her appearance. But she has Konohana-san and Tennouji-san at her side... They wouldn't befriend someone of poor character. Even if they wanted to, their families wouldn't allow it."

Maki's family was the Rakuou Group, a powerhouse even among Kiou Academy's elite. She knew that the friends of high-status heirs were privately vetted. Parents wouldn't let their precious children, the future heads of their families, be corrupted. The Konohana and Tennouji families had surely investigated Narika. The fact that they continue to associate means they judged her to be acceptable. Maki trusted that judgment. If Narika could pass their background checks, her character was reliable.

"Personally, I'm actually more worried about Tennouji-san."

"Tennouji-san...?"

The vice president tilted her head, confused. Mirei Tennouji had excellent grades and was always a hot topic in the student council. She couldn't imagine what was worrying. But in truth, Maki's biggest concern in this election was Mirei Tennouji.

"Her rivalry with Konohana-san is intense. It's so famous that students in different grades know about it... I'm worried that our school might split into a 'Konohana Faction' and a 'Tennouji Faction' and tear itself apart."

Hinako Konohana and Mirei Tennouji were both incredibly charismatic. If their respective followers split into factions and started fighting—it would be uncontrollable.

"...That's a terrifying thought."

"It is. Let's hope I'm wrong."

If it happened, Kiou Academy would become a living hell. It wouldn't stay within the school—it could escalate into a war between the families. It wouldn't be surprising if the Konohana Group and the Tennouji Group ended up waging another high-stakes management tournament over the school's very operating rights.

"It seems like Tennouji-san has come to terms with her rivalry, though."

"It seems so. Her report mentioned a change in her mindset... Huh? Miyakojima-san's report says something similar..."

Good eye, Maki thought. She'd had the same question.

"Actually, I noticed that this morning. I went and asked both Tennouji-san and Miyakojima-san about it. They both gave me similar answers."

Why the change? Mirei Tennouji's answer:

'It was Tomonari-kun. I was carrying the wrong burden... He's the one who corrected me.'

Narika Miyakojima's answer:

'Um, Itsuki changed me. Because of him, I can trust people... and I can talk to you like this.'

Maki shared the two responses. The vice president's eyes widened.

"...So they both changed because of Tomonari-kun?"

"If you take them at their word, yes."

There was likely no hidden meaning. Neither Tennouji-san nor Miyakojima-san were the type to lie. And Maki had just asked Itsuki what he thought of them. As the person who had apparently caused these changes, she'd been curious.

(...Tomonari-kun understands them well. It's probably no accident he was the catalyst for their change.)

She hoped the person who wrote that final line on his report felt the same. Itsuki Tomonari had the power to make others grow. At least, in this environment, he could fill that role.

(...But one question remains.)

At the very end, one doubt remained. How does he see Hinako Konohana? Maki had only asked as an aside... but Itsuki's answer had been strangely shallow compared to his others. A perfect person. Maki found that suspicious. Everyone at Kiou Academy would say Hinako Konohana is perfect. For the honest and earnest Itsuki, who spent so much time with her, to have such a generic opinion... it felt unnatural.

"It's good that they're close..."

The vice president said meaningfully.

"I know what you're implying. If they can't function without each other, that's a problem. We'll find out during the election."

For example—if Itsuki Tomonari loses, and one of them wins. If the new president can't function because Itsuki isn't there, we'll have a problem. Friendship is valuable, but if you're too dependent, you can't stand on your own.

"By the way, President, unrelated to Tomonari-kun and his group, I've finished investigating that male student who's running for Treasurer."

The vice president started a new report. As Maki had told Mirei, there were other candidates. This one was a male student, likely unconnected to Itsuki's group—

"Just as you suspected. It looks like he's been bribing people."

"I figured. I was wondering why his popularity spiked. Tsk... buying his reputation. What a punk."

Maki pulled a file from her desk. It was the list of candidates. She drew a line through one of the names.

"If only everyone were as earnest as Tomonari-kun... He really is worthy of that 'noble tea party.' Thank goodness Tennouji-san and Miyakojima-san are clean."

"True. It lets us investigate with peace of mind."

"Hey, hey. It's not an 'investigation,' it's an 'interview'."

"Ah... my mistake."

The vice president had misspoken, and Maki gently corrected her. The student council was officially interviewing candidates, but there was an ulterior motive. A background check. The interview part wasn't a lie. Maki's planned feature, "A Peek into the Candidates' Daily Lives," would be published before the election. But the interviews were also a good way to check the candidates' relationships. If anything seemed unnatural, they could look closer...

"Vice President, sorry, but could you bring Tomonari-kun here after school today?"

"I can..."

Her eyes asked why.

"I just want to talk to him. It might be a sensitive topic, so I'd like it to be just us."

"Understood."

After school. The vice president brought me to the student council room.

"I heard you wanted to see me...?"

"Yes. Have a seat."

I sat on the sofa as she indicated. President Minato was alone. The vice president, who had come with me, gave a small nod and left. Narika and Tennouji-san hadn't been summoned. It was just the two of us.

"I've read your reports, including the VP's interviews. You're serious in class, and your life at home is commendable. You're an excellent student."

"...Thank you."

President Minato said, holding the file. But I knew she hadn't called me here just for that.

"I have two questions for you."

She held up two fingers.

"First: What is going on with you and Miyakojima-san?"

My heart jumped. I can't believe she saw it... I hadn't known her for long, but she'd seen right through me. That must mean Narika and I are being more obvious than I thought. And I thought I was being so careful...

"...I'm sorry, I can't answer that. But I will do my best to ensure it doesn't affect the election."

"I see. Is it not something you can discuss with me?"

"No."

This isn't something I can bring to the student council.

"...I understand. Then, the second question. This is the main one."

Her expression turned serious.

"Do you have anyone you can rely on?"

I didn't understand the question. After a beat, I spoke.

"...What do you mean by that?"

"According to the interviews, many people rely on you. But I get the feeling you rarely rely on anyone else."

President Minato placed the file on the table.

"Student council work is... probably more emotionally taxing than you imagine."

"Emotionally...?"

"Yes... A lot of students come to us with their problems. Relationship troubles, heavy family expectations..."

This was a surprise. This isn't a normal school; it's Kiou Academy, filled with the children of the elite, connected to politics and finance. I assumed the student council's work would be... grander. School finances, or diplomacy. But that wasn't it.

"The students here have had rigorous educations since they were children. They don't need help with practical matters,"

President Minato explained.

"What they do need support with are their emotional problems. If you join the council, you'll be dealing with sensitive issues much more frequently."

"I've seen the interview results. You seem to be good at navigating these issues. Several people said they were able to change thanks to you... In that respect, you're exactly the kind of talent we need."

People really said that about me? I felt a simple sense of pride.

"However, once you join, the number of people you have to look after will explode... I worry if you'll be able to handle it. You seem like the type to bottle things up. In fact, you refused to discuss my first question..."

"That's..."

That was just... I didn't think it was appropriate. It's between me and Narika. I can't just tell anyone. No, but... who would I talk to? That's her point, isn't it? Hearing her say it, I realized I had no intention of talking to anyone about it.

"Looking at your tournament performance, you're good at finding partners. But you don't have anyone to confide in."

"...Perhaps."

I couldn't argue. It was true, I rarely consult others. I don't think that's a bad thing, but "not consulting" and "not being able to consult" are two different things. Which one... am I?

"Students at this school are under a lot of stress. You know that, right?"

I know... Hinako, Tennouji-san, Narika... everyone is carrying something heavy.

"Some are suffering under their parents' expectations, some are in disputes over engagements, some feel inferior... Their problems are heavy. Do you know what happens when you're juggling several of those at once?"

I tried to imagine it, but couldn't. I shook my head. President Minato said:

"Yeah... we get crushed, too. Our thoughts get messy... You want to deal with them one by one, but they all happen at the same time. And they're sensitive, so you can't give a careless answer. But being careful takes time..."

She sighed.

"And eventually, you can't help it. You just say—'Well, isn't this your fault?'"

I winced. You can't say that. The person's problem might genuinely be their own fault, but that's not what she meant. She meant the consultant gets tired of thinking and says it just to push them away. What if I said that to Hinako? Or to Tennouji-san, or Narika... I can't even imagine it.

"Just think of this as me meddling, but student council work is draining. If you can, it's better to find someone you can talk to about anything."

President Minato smiled gently. I was so focused on becoming a consultant, I'd only ever thought about being the one who listens. I never considered that I might need to be on the other side.

"That's all I wanted to say. Sorry for making you come all this way."

She straightened up.

"...Do you have any questions for me?"

"...I have one."

I probably shouldn't ask this...

"What you just said... was that from personal experience?"

President Minato smiled faintly.

I left the student council room and walked through the school, lost in thought.

(...Someone to rely on.)

She'd hit a nerve. President Minato probably wasn't pointing out a fatal flaw. She'd even said she was "meddling." It was more a casual concern than a major problem. Still, I couldn't ignore it. I hadn't even been able to offer a rebuttal. I want to be a consultant, a job where you are the person others confide in. I've been focused on learning how to be that person. During the tournament, I'd counseled Narika, Asahi-san, and Taisho. But maybe I'd been too focused on that, and I'd never considered finding a consultant for myself. Especially not for personal matters.

I was mulling this over on my way to the classroom where Hinako was waiting...

"I-Itsuki!"

Narika's voice came from the hallway. Was she looking for me? She hurried over. We're supposed to be in that awkward phase... but she looked like she didn't have time for that.

"Narika? What's wrong?"

"Oh... oh, um, I need to talk to you about something."

She seemed hesitant. Have I ever approached someone like this, just to talk...? I'm almost jealous of her directness.

"Um, it's... kinda private. So please don't tell anyone..."

"Okay. I promise."

She looked genuinely troubled, so I nodded firmly. She took a deep breath, her expression set.

"I... I got confessed to...!! And I don't know what to say...!!"

President Minato's advice flew straight out of my head. Confessed? Who? ...Narika? Someone confessed to Narika, and she doesn't know how to respond? My face tightened.

"You..."

I could feel my own expression stiffen.

"You're coming to me with this!?"

"B-Because you're the only one I can talk to about this...!!"

She must know how awkward this is. We're suddenly in a love triangle. Someone likes Narika, but Narika just told me that she likes me... And I haven't even answered her yet, and she's here asking me for advice on how to answer someone else?

"Oh, ah, ugh..."

"I-Itsuki, are you okay!? You're making weird noises!"

"I'm fine... My brain just feels like it's about to short-circuit..."

"Are you really okay!?"

The cognitive load was so high I could barely speak. Not even the hardest exams at Kiou made my brain hurt this much. Calm down... This situation is a mess, but I just have to take it one step at a time.

"...Is it someone I know?"

First, I just need to understand the shape of this... triangle. But Narika looked pained.

"...Sorry, I want to keep that private. It's... their privacy, too."

That's true. I understood, but one name immediately popped into my head.

(...Don't tell me it's Kita.)

If it's someone I know... it has to be him. He's been watching Narika ever since the sports festival. I didn't want to get involved, so I'd pretended not to notice. But maybe the relief after the tournament gave him the push he needed.

"Did they... explicitly say they 'like' you?"

"...They did."

Narika nodded. So it's not a misunderstanding. The third point of this triangle was probably Kita. That thought made this all feel painfully real. A confession isn't something you do lightly. Especially not for a Kiou student. Their futures are practically mapped out, and their freedom to date is low. There are so many obstacles. Parents, companies... You can't just date freely without the resolve to face all that. That should be true for Narika, too. I still haven't given her an answer to her confession. Can I really give her advice on this?

"...Sorry. I can't talk to you about this."

I felt pathetic as I apologized.

"Until I give you my answer... I don't have the right."

"Ngh... You're right."

Narika seemed to understand, and nodded.

"B-But, if I do that, I'll have to deal with this feeling all by myself..."

"No, that's... That's what I'm doing right now..."

"R-Right... You're in this position because of me..."

"Don't say it! Stop! You're just making it more complicated!"

Why did a love triangle have to pop up now of all times... Though as one corner of said triangle, I probably don't have the right to complain.

"Ugh... It's so hard... Why is love so difficult? If this was kendo, I could just... fight my way through..."

"You're a warrior... That would just be you beating everyone up."

"...True."

Narika calmed down a little.

"Nnngh... My stomach... It's been hurting so much lately..."

"...Mine's starting to hurt, too."

We both clutched our stomachs. Does love always come with a stomach-ache...?

A black sedan pulled up to the Konohana mansion.

"Welcome back."

As I got out of the car with Hinako and Shizune-san, the guard on duty bowed deeply. I noticed the man who'd beaten me in our first match was among them. I hadn't seen the other two I'd sparred with since... Had they already gone back to the mountains for round two of their training?

"Fuu... I'm so tired today."

Hinako relaxed her shoulders beside me. I watched her out of the corner of my eye, my mind replaying President Minato's words, and Narika's request. What do I really think of Narika?

"...Itsuki, what's wrong?"

I realized Hinako was looking up at me, her gaze sharp.

"You look troubled..."

"...It's nothing. Just thinking."

For a brief second, I wondered, What if I asked Hinako for advice? But I stopped myself. I know she can be relied on, but I don't want her to worry. I want her to be at peace. She's already carrying the burden of her family. The least I can do is make sure she can relax when I'm around. So... I can't tell her. After all, I'm her caretaker. I don't want to do anything to damage that relationship.

"By the way, the Konohana Group's social gathering will be held in three days."

Shizune-san announced as we walked inside.

"Ojou-sama is scheduled to attend. Itsuki-san, you will attend as well."

"Understood... Will it only be Konohana Group members?"

"The Group and its affiliates. Master Kagen is the host, which means we are on the hosting side. Please begin reviewing your etiquette to avoid any embarrassment."

I nodded again.

"I understand."

Given the guest list, it sounded like a business function. My school friends like Tennouji-san and Narika wouldn't be there. My formal suit was back from the cleaners. My size hadn't changed, so it should be fine, but I'd better try it on just in case.

"Head Maid."

A maid bustled down the hall toward Shizune-san.

"What is it?"

"It's..."

It seemed to be important. As the maid spoke, Shizune-san's expression grew tense. The maid finished, bowed, and hurried away.

"Shizune-san, what happened?"

"The chef scheduled to oversee the party's cuisine has fallen ill. We must find a replacement immediately."

Shizune-san put a finger to her chin, lost in thought.

"...Itsuki-san, has Hirano-san returned from school by now?"

"Huh?... Um, school should be out by now."

I checked the time on my phone and nodded. But for her to ask that now, could it be—

"We'll ask Hirano-san to do it."

Shizune-san stated, her voice calm and decisive.

"Uh... I'll be in your care for the next three days."

A few hours later, Yuri arrived with backpack on. Hinako, Shizune-san, and I were waiting for her in the entryway. Her expression wasn't her usual confident self; it was stiff with tension.

"As I explained on the phone, you will serve as one of the culinary staff for the party. The menu and ingredients are set. You will have three days to learn the necessary techniques and will act as a support cook on the day of the event."

Shizune-san reiterated the situation. I see. With the menu set, the required skills are also fixed. She must have decided that if Yuri drills those skills for three days straight, she'll be ready.

"Do you have any questions?"

"...No."

Yuri shook her head. But I had one. I raised my hand.

"These three days... Yuri, what about school?"

"I'm taking time off."

She said it as if it were obvious.

"Think about it. This is a party for a major corporation. All the high-profile guests will have refined palates... You can't serve half-baked food at an event like this. The top chefs spend days planning the perfect menu... I'd skip school for a week for a chance to be a part of that."

Her voice was filled with resolve. I felt a surge of respect. For Yuri, this party's kitchen was a major goal. She was stepping onto that stage with her full-body, her will on clear display.

"Please do not worry about school."

Shizune-san said, looking at Yuri.

"I have already contacted your homeroom teacher and explained the circumstances. You will be on official leave."

"Huh...? Th-Thank you, for doing all that..."

"We are the ones making the sudden request. It's the least we can do."

Classic Shizune-san. Fast, flawless support.

"...Sorry, I do have one question."

Yuri said, a little hesitant.

"Why... did you choose me as the replacement?"

It was a fair question. Shizune-san, with her usual composed expression, replied.

"Because I judged that, in this situation, you could be trusted."

She continued.

"Since you began working here on weekends, your dedication has been exemplary. The other chefs have told me you absorb knowledge and techniques rapidly. You're already handling not just prep, but plating and seasoning as well. In fact, you've been entrusted with the final seasoning on numerous dishes, all of which were delicious."

Hinako and I had eaten several of those dishes. They were incredible. She'd even been developing new desserts.

"Based on all this, you clearly have the skill... I also wanted to give you the experience of a large stage, to encourage your future growth."

Shizune-san said it flatly. Her voice was devoid of emotion, but I recognized it as her form of kindness. She was saying this wasn't a favor; it was a position Yuri had earned with her own two hands. Yuri listened, her lips pressed tightly together. Her hands were trembling slightly.

"Thank you... I'll do my best!!"

"I'm glad to see you're motivated. The kitchen is yours to use until the party. Use any ingredients you need."

Shizune-san, seeing Yuri's spirit, had even arranged for her to practice.

"Good luck, Yuri. I'm happy to serve as your taste-tester."

"You said it."

All I can do is eat, I thought, but Yuri's wicked grin told me I'd made a mistake.

"I'm going to make you eat till your stomach explodes."

"...Please have mercy."

Good thing I haven't eaten dinner yet. And... my brain is so fried from all my worries, this might be a good way to empty it.

"Can I ask you, too, Konohana-san?"

Yuri looked at Hinako.

"Yes, of course. But I have a small appetite, so I'm not sure how much help I'll be..."

You just ate chips, didn't you.

That night.

"Ugh... I ate too much."

I was lying on my bed, rubbing my stomach. I'm usually with Hinako at this hour, but she also ate too many of Yuri's test dishes, complained of a stomach-ache, and went back to her room early.

'No more... I can't... I'm at my limit...'

I remembered her declaring defeat in the dining room, looking like she was dying. For the record, I couldn't eat any more either. Yuri is apparently still in the kitchen practicing...

(...She's really giving it her all, huh.)

When she first arrived, she was more nervous than I'd ever seen her. But that's understandable. It was sudden, and it's a huge responsibility. I closed my eyes, and all the unanswered questions flooded my mind.

(Narika...)

Her face appeared in my thoughts. I touched my cheek. I was shocked when she kissed me, but... I also accepted it surprisingly easily. Had I been subconsciously aware of her feelings? Since when? When did Narika start to like me? I felt like it wasn't just during the tournament.

It was... longer than that. Maybe even before I came to Kiou Academy. If so... a lot of things would make sense. When she found out I was living at the Konohana house, she'd yelled, "That's so unfair!" That must have been part of it. The tennis match against Hinako. That time I stayed over at her house. All this time, Narika has been...

(...Isn't that a little narcissistic?)

Maybe I'm overthinking it. I felt it back then, too, but I don't know if she knew it was love. In any case... for someone as shy as Narika, to decide to confess... That must have taken more courage than most people could even imagine.

(I have to... give her an answer.)

What kind of relationship do I want with her? What kind... ... ...

"...suki."

I heard a voice.

"...Itsuki."

There it was again. I was comfortable, half-asleep. I slowly opened my eyes.

"Itsuki, wake up."

"Huh..."

Yuri's face was right in front of mine.

"...Huh? Yuri...?"

I sat up, my mind foggy. I must have fallen asleep. I'd changed into my pajamas, but I hadn't even brushed my teeth. I looked at the clock. It was two in the morning.

"...What's wrong, at this hour?"

When I asked, Yuri's cheeks flushed.

"...You're the one who said I could come over any time."

I did say that— I remembered when I'd ridden home with her. I'd offered her my room as a place to relax. But, I meant any time, not... this time. And why was she... straddling me? Her expression was serious, as if she wouldn't let me escape. She was sweating slightly, her face red, her breathing shallow. Her tension was contagious. I swallowed, my own nerves fraying. Is this... a night attack—

"Itsuki, please—help me!!"

Yuri pressed her palms together and bowed her head, still on top of me. I just stared at the top of her head.

"At this rate, I'll never make it in time!"

Seeing her desperation, my brain instantly cooled. The fog of sleep vanished. I'd had a colossally stupid misunderstanding.

"—I understand."

I gently pushed her off and got out of bed. Yuri blinked, confused. I did a quick stretch.

"What do I need to do?"

"A lot. But... you're not mad? I just woke you up."

"Because you must be really in trouble, right?"

"...Yeah."

Yuri nodded, looking guilty. If some stranger had woken me up, I'd be annoyed... but this is Yuri. She wouldn't do this without a good reason.

"Um, thanks. You get it."

I'm the one who's always being helped by her. Not just now. She's always looked out for me. If I can help her, I'll gladly shake off any amount of sleep.

"I'm happy if I can be useful to you."

"~~!? I told you...! Stop saying such heavy things...!!"

"But it's true."

"Ah—geez! Just go get ready!"

Yuri, red to the tips of her ears, darted out of my room. If I'm going to the kitchen, I should wear something clean. I grabbed a pair of slacks and a shirt from my closet, changed, and followed her out. Yuri was waiting in the hall, still blushing.

"Did you ask Shizune-san where my room was?"

"Yeah. I was going to bring you some food later, so I asked. But I never got a break, and then you were asleep..."

She must have knocked, but I don't lock my door, so she came in. It's not like I'm embarrassed about her seeing me asleep. I'm usually studying at this hour, and I keep the door unlocked so Hinako can come in. I just happened to be asleep early. Thanks to that, I'm not even groggy.

"Okay, first, I need you to help with prep."

"Got it."

When we got to the kitchen, Yuri was all business. I put on the apron she handed me and started. I've worked in enough restaurants; I can handle prep. Beside me, Yuri was staring intently at the menu notes.

"...I need to be faster. Am I not getting the sauté timing? But I can't sacrifice the crispiness of the skin..."

She was practicing the fish course. The ingredient was Momiji-dai, autumn sea bream. Sauté is a French technique, pan-frying. It makes the skin crispy and the meat tender. I only knew that from my etiquette lessons. I can't cook at all. I handed her the prepped fish, and she started cooking immediately.

"You seem fine now."

I said, watching her work.

"What do you mean?"

"You just seemed so nervous when you first got here."

"Ah... that. I wasn't nervous."

I tilted my head.

"Huh?"

She wasn't nervous?

"I was just... fired up."

Yuri said, lighting the stove.

"Right now, I mostly just do seasoning and prep... I'm going to use this chance to aim for a higher spot. This is a decisive battle for me."

Yuri said, adjusting the flame. I had completely misunderstood. She wasn't nervous at all. She was trembling with ambition. From the moment she got that call, her mind was set on one thing: victory. Hearing her resolve, I—

Smack! I slapped both my cheeks.

"...Good!"

The sound was loud. Yuri jumped and looked at me.

"Wh-What was that for?"

"Nothing. I just need to focus, too."

My worries about Narika, President Minato's words... I'll set them aside. I have to focus on the task at hand. And besides—I think I just found the solution to my own problem.

"I'll share the menu, but I might make changes, so just use it as a reference."

"But the menu is set, right? You can change it?"

"If it's a good change, they'll approve it. That's the kind of chefs they are here."

Without me knowing, Yuri had built a relationship of trust with the Konohana chefs. But I see... there's room for change.

"...I looked at the guest list for this party."

"The guest list? Why... wait, you have access to that?"

"I figured something like this might happen, so I asked Shizune-san for the file."

I was going to start tomorrow, but I might as well start now.

"If I break down the age, gender, and background, I should be able to see demand... I should check the serving times, too. And if possible, cross-reference with past parties..."

Cooking is a business. If I analyze the data like I did in the tournament, I should find something. The guests are the market. What product will meet their needs? If the menu was set, this would be pointless, but if Yuri is making changes, it's a different story. I ran to my room, grabbed my laptop, and started my analysis.

"...It's because you're like this that I get fired up, too."

Yuri whispered behind me... but I couldn't hear.

"Did you say something?"

"Nothing!"

When I turned, Yuri was staring intently at the pan. And she looked like she was having the time of her life.

The next few days were a blur. Interviews at school, helping Yuri at night. The day of the party arrived. The venue was a high-end hotel in Tokyo, in a grand ballroom on an upper floor. It was a standing buffet, to encourage mingling. The room was already packed with guests. We couldn't let anyone know we lived together, so Hinako and I arrived separately. I entered with Shizune-san and waited for Hinako, who would be arriving with Kagen-san.

"Itsuki..."

Her voice came from behind me. I turned. Hinako was wearing a pale green evening gown. Ojou-sama Mode Hinako is always elegant, but the soft color suited her youthful features.

"Hinako, is that a new dress?"

"Mm. It's getting cold, so I had it made with a thicker fabric."

Not "bought," but "had it made." She's in another world. Well, my suit was provided by the Konohana family, so who am I to talk?

"It looks great on you."

"Ehehe... Yours, too."

Hinako smiled, blushing. Part of it was the season, but we were both in new clothes. Even though we live together, seeing each other like this felt different.

"Well... it's a pain, but I should go make my rounds."

"Okay. I'll be watching from the back. I'll jump in if anything happens."

Hinako, looking annoyed, prepared to greet the guests. We always split up at this point—

"Itsuki-san, tonight, please accompany Ojou-sama in greeting the guests."

"Huh?"

Shizune-san, who had been waiting nearby, spoke suddenly.

"Is that... okay?"

"It's fine... You'll see why when you're out there."

I didn't get it, but I did as she said and walked with Hinako. The men chatting with glasses in hand would stop talking the moment they saw Hinako, creating a path for her. It was a stark reminder of her special status. But that status came with heavy responsibilities.

"Hinako, good evening."

"Good evening."

The man seemed to know her from childhood; his tone was casual.

"My, and who is this? You must be Tomonari-kun."

The man looked at my face and asked.

"I am... Uh, how do you know me?"

"I've heard about you from Master Kagen. He mentioned his daughter Hinako would be attending with her friend, Tomonari-kun."

He's been talking about me... I suddenly understood what Shizune-san meant.

"I watched the Management Tournament. Your ideas went beyond the scope of the game, with a real-world focus... You're not just 'good at games.' I can tell you've seriously studied real business."

"...Thank you for your kind words."

I never expected to be praised for the tournament here. It felt surreal. After chatting for a bit, we continued our rounds. Everyone I met seemed to know who I was. I knew the tournament got attention, but this was more than I'd imagined. How did I... get here? It didn't feel real.

"Stop spacing out."

We'd finished our greetings and were walking when a voice cut in. I turned—it was Kagen-san. Shizune-san was behind him. She gave me a silent nod.

"You need to hold your head high. The person standing next to Hinako shouldn't be staring at the floor."

"S-Sorry."

I guess I was spacing out, my gaze had dropped.

"Um, Kagen-san, why did you tell everyone about me...?"

"After your performance in the tournament, it would be more unnatural if you weren't seen with Hinako. You can maintain this distance from now on."

Kagen-san said this, then turned and walked away.

"Well? How does it feel?"

Shizune-san asked me.

"To attend a party at Ojou-sama's side?"

I couldn't answer right away. I remembered when I first started... that dinner with the shipbuilding executives. Hinako had dropped her food, invoking the "three-second rule." I hadn't even been allowed to stand next to her. I couldn't help her. But this time, I was right by her side.

"...I don't want this to be a one-time thing."

I said, a new resolve welling up inside me.

"One day, I want to be the person who can stand here as a matter of course."

"Good. I'll be cheering for you."

Shizune-san seemed pleased. She followed after Kagen-san. I was about to move on, but I noticed Hinako's movements had become strangely stiff.

"Hinako?"

"...Mmph."

She was bright red, looking at the floor. ...Thinking about it, I guess I just said something pretty intense. Now that I realize it, I feel stiff, too. I looked away, trying to calm down.

"Hey, you two."

A tall, slim man in an elegant suit walked over. It was Takuma-san.

"Grr..."

"Haha, Hinako, don't drop the act just because I'm here."

Hinako made no attempt to hide her annoyance, but Takuma-san didn't care.

"Itsuki-kun, did you make your rounds?"

"Yes, mostly..."

"Good."

What does he mean? Is he happy that I'm building connections? ...Am I overthinking it? With Takuma-san, you always wonder... but maybe he's just... praising me.

"By the way, look over there."

He pointed to a nearby table. Two men were talking, looking incredibly awkward.

"Ah... oh, a pleasure. You're from Hamada Motors..."

"Y-Yes, hello, CEO of Konohana Motors... haha..."

Both were sweating, forcing smiles. I felt sweat on my own brow.

"Ahh—it's all your fault they're so awkward."

"Th-That's my fault!?"

"Of course. You're the one who said Hamada Motors was trying to acquire Konohana Motors in the tournament..."

I... did say that! But that was just an analysis of the game... wait a minute.

"...Weren't you the one running Hamada Motors in the game?"

"Oh, right. I guess that makes us partners in crime."

Can't we just make this his fault?

"Okay, I was half-joking."

"Half...?"

...Not all? Takuma-san's gaze sharpened.

"It's because it was a game that we can laugh it off. If you did that in the real world, it would be a serious problem."

His expression was suddenly serious.

"Even if you think you've made the best move, you can make an unexpected enemy... What do you do then?"

He was testing me. If this were real... what would I do? If my actions made an enemy, I shouldn't act rashly. In that case, I should...

"I'd ask someone like you for help."

"That's the right answer."

He nodded, satisfied.

"Just like that. Keep learning how to grasp people."

"Grasp people...?"

"Connections are a cycle. If you understand that, you can control them."

Takuma-san said this, and walked away. Connections are a cycle... It's abstract, but... I get it. When I talk to him, I always have these moments of strange clarity. Is it because we think alike?

"Mph..."

I glanced to my side. Hinako was puffing her cheeks.

"...Hinako?"

"Don't rely on him... Rely on me."

She said, tugging on my suit jacket. I couldn't help but smile.

"You're right... I will."

I don't really want to bother Hinako... but Takuma-san is so unnervingly cryptic. If that did happen, I'd probably choose her.

"We've made our rounds. Want to get some food?"

"Mm!"

Hinako dropped her act. We walked to the buffet tables. You often miss the food at these things, but we were fine. The guests were all affiliates, so Hinako knew most of them. I picked up a plate and looked at the food. The sauté of autumn sea bream was there.

"This is Yuri's."

We both put some on our plates and tried it.

"...This is delicious, right?"

"Mm... This is really good."

My taste wasn't wrong. Hinako was praising it, too. I looked around. Other guests were eating it. They'd take a bite, and then their eyes would widen a little as they focused on the flavor. She did it. Yuri's food is a success. And this taste... because I'd helped, I knew. This wasn't the original recipe. This was Yuri's own twist, the one she'd tested over and over and gotten the head chef to approve.

"I don't know why, but... seeing this makes me proud."

"...If you praise me that directly, it's... kinda embarrassing."

Yuri's voice came from behind me.

"Yuri—"

I turned and froze. Yuri was in a beautiful evening gown. It was a simple, elegant black dress. She had a mature air, different from her usual self.

"Yuri, what are you...?"

"The head chef's idea... I told him he didn't have to."

She said that, but she looked happy. She was a little awkward, but... she was clearly happy to be in such a beautiful dress. I get it. I felt the same when I first got my suit. I knew exactly what to say.

"It looks great on you."

"Ngh... Y-You think? I'm not so sure."

It was rare to see Yuri look unconfident.

"Well... thanks."

She looked away, her face flushing. Hinako smiled at her.

"It really does suit you."

"Thanks... Hearing that from you, Konohana-san, makes me feel better."

Hey. You could trust my word, too.

"Does this mean your work is done?"

"I still have cleanup. But there's a lull, so the chef told me to come out and see the guests' reactions."

The kitchen's rush must be over. Yuri probably planned to work to the very end, but the chef found an excuse to give her a break. I looked out at the guests again.

"Yuri, you did it."

"Yep—piece of cake!"

She grinned. I wanted to give her a high-five, but... we couldn't make a scene.

"Did you make this dish?"

A man nearby approached Yuri. He must have overheard us.

"Ah... yes. I'm Hirano."

"How old are you?"

"Seventeen."

The man looked shocked... Well, Yuri is small. He probably mistook her for a guest's daughter.

"Forgive me. I'm..."

He smoothly handed Yuri a business card. I caught a glimpse. He was a restaurant owner. Handing out cards on the street is weird, but at a Konohana party, he was legit.

"This... this restaurant... this is the three-star...?"

Yuri's eyes went wide. The man nodded. He's a famous owner.

"Hirano-san, would you like to come work at my restaurant? With your skill, you could be a main chef in ten years. I can even arrange for you to study in Europe."

"Main chef" isn't just a title. It's the head of the entire kitchen. One per restaurant. He must run a French restaurant, and he heard the "Europe" part. This was... huge. Yuri just opened the door to her future.

"Thank you for the honor. I appreciate the offer."

Yuri bowed deeply. I thought she'd be ecstatic, but her reaction was... calm. More than that, she looked... anxious.

"I have one question... If I accept, would I be an exclusive chef at your restaurant?"

"Yes. We don't hire often. If you accept, you'd start next month, living in the dorms."

He said it so matter-of-factly. He didn't say "drop out," but that's what he meant. Yuri knew it. This wasn't a simple "yes." It was the perfect path... but the sacrifice was too great. And for Yuri, it wasn't just school.

"I help at my family's shop... Would I be able to do both?"

The owner thought for a moment.

"That would be difficult. When we hire a chef, we commit to training them. We can't have them dividing their focus."

I could hear the pride in his voice. He wasn't just hiring her; he was investing in her. He had a responsibility to make her a top-tier chef. It was an amazing offer... but for Yuri, abandoning her family's shop was a brutal choice. Her dream was to make that shop a national chain. Taking this job, even for the training, would be missing the point.

(...What will she do?)

Yuri was at a crossroads. Path one: Keep training at her shop and the Konohana house, and one day take over Hiramaru. Path two: Accept this offer and become a main chef at a world-class restaurant. Watching her, I thought of my own situation. Who do I support? Tennouji-san or Narika? I've been stuck on that question ever since Narika announced she was running.

If this were me... what would Yuri do? I watched her, my breath held. Finally, she spoke.

"I'm sorry—I can't accept!"

The owner looked stunned. He never expected to be turned down flat. Hinako and I were shocked, too. But Yuri immediately looked up.

"So... please negotiate with me! I absolutely will not leave my family..."

"Hmm... even if you say that..."

"Then, could you come to my family's restaurant!?"

The owner looked troubled, but Yuri pressed on.

"Our food is delicious. It's a diner, so it's a different style, but I'm proud of our cooking... If your concern is 'dividing my focus,' then if my family's shop is also high-level, that shouldn't be a problem, right!?"

"Well..."

That is... one way to look at it. The owner was clearly considering it. If she could keep improving at both places...

"I can vouch for Hirano-san's skill."

Hinako, who had been listening, stepped in.

"You're scouting her for her potential. But her skills have only been honed at the Konohana house for half a year. That means her foundation was built at her family's shop."

The word of Hinako Konohana... that moved him.

"I recommend you pay her shop a visit... You won't regret it."

"...I understand. In that case, Hirano-san, your address?"

Yuri scribbled it down. The man took it, promised to visit, and left. He had refused at first... but that was just his restaurant's policy. The more traditional the place, the stricter the rules. But Yuri had demanded a third option. She'd bet that her skill, even at half-time, was worth it. She'd made that decision in an instant.

"Konohana-san... thank you for the assist."

"Not at all. I only said what I was thinking."

Yuri thanked her, and Hinako smiled. They were laughing, and after a moment, Yuri looked at me.

"...Itsuki, what's with that look on your face?"

"Nothing, I'm just amazed you could be so decisive..."

I don't know what my expression was. I must have looked stunned. But Yuri didn't seem to get why I was so surprised. She just tilted her head—

"Because if I can't choose, I can't choose."

She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I was speechless. And then, I started to laugh.

"You really are the strongest."

Right. She's always been like this. Yuri Hirano has been the strongest person I know since the day I met her. She'd said it before—I'm greedy, I put myself first. She'll be as "greedy" as it takes to get what she wants. It was such a pure, selfish, and enviable way to live.

"...Yuri, I actually have something I need to talk to you about. I know it's late, but... do you have time?"

"Sure. Can't you say it now?"

"No... I'd rather it be just us."

As I said that—Hinako's head snapped toward me. Her eyes were burning. Whoa, scary.

"T-T-T-Tomonari-kun...? Wh-Wh-What is... that... about...?"

"Uh? Oh, it's just... hard to explain..."

Why is she so panicked? As I was wondering, Yuri just laughed.

"That was a short friendship."

Hinako was making a face I'd never seen before. Huh...? What...? Are they fighting...?

After the party, I helped the Konohana staff clean the venue, while Yuri went to clear the kitchen. Hinako was exhausted from playing her role and had already returned to the mansion with Shizune-san. I'd be catching a ride back with the other servants later.

I finished my tasks early. Wanting to talk to Yuri, I left the hall. Thanks to my usual hard work, the other staff members were happy to let me go.

I waited for a bit in a lounge area on the hotel's second floor. Soon, Yuri arrived. Neither of us felt like sitting, so we stood by the railing of the mezzanine, overlooking the grand lobby on the first floor.

"Uh, so... what did you want to talk about...?"

Yuri asked, fidgeting and looking restless.

I looked her straight in the eye and started.

"Actually, I'm in a bit of trouble—"

"Okay—I knew it—I knew it was something like that—"

Yuri sighed.

"Um, Yuri...?"

"Hold on. I'm texting Konohana-san right now to clear up the misunderstanding."

She said, tapping at her phone.

Misunderstanding...? What is she talking about...?

I waited. Yuri put her phone back in her pocket.

"...So. What's the trouble?"

I didn't get it, but at least she seemed willing to listen. I relaxed and got straight to the point.

"…I was confessed to recently."

"Seriously!?"

Yuri's eyes went wide.

"I-Is it really that surprising?"

"Of course it is! You might be numb to it, but she's probably a Kiou Academy student, right!? That means you were confessed to by a genuine, high-class ojou-sama! That's the classic 'marry rich and skip a decade of work' jackpot!"

Ah, right... so that's how it looks. Come to think of it, a year ago I was a broke student. Being confessed to by a Kiou ojou-sama is a huge deal.

"You lied, by the way."

"Huh?"

"In the car, that time. You said girls were talking to you more, but nothing like that was happening."

"Oh... Well, back then, I, um, hadn't decided to talk to anyone about it..."

"I knew something was on your mind... I just didn't think it was that."

Yuri had noticed I was preoccupied, but hadn't connected it to the very topic we'd already discussed.

"Ugh... so who is it!? Is it someone I know!?"

"...Sorry. For her sake, I have to keep it a secret."

When Narika came to me, I'd asked the same question. She gave me the same answer. Now that the roles were reversed, I completely understood. Especially since Yuri knows Narika... I can't say her name.

"...Huh? W-Wait. And you're coming to me..."

Yuri's initial excitement faded, replaced by confusion.

"Um... A-Are you... going to accept...?"

She asked, a shadow passing over her eyes.

But my problem was the opposite of what she was thinking.

"...That's what I'm stuck on."

I wasn't here for advice on how to accept, or how to reject. I was here to figure out what I should do about the confession itself.

"Nngh—..."

Yuri turned her back to me, pacing and holding her head. She seemed to be struggling with something, as if caught between her own feelings and some kind of responsibility...

"Ahhh—jeez—fine!!"

Yuri finally yelled. She took a few steadying breaths, and a fire lit in her eyes.

"I'll listen to your problem! Because I'm your 'big sister,' dammit!"

"O-Oh... Thanks...?"

She seemed to be half-resigning herself to it. I was just startled.

"First! Why are you hesitating!?"

She demanded, pointing at me. But... I couldn't even answer that.

"What, you don't even know that?"

Hearing her say it, I nodded. She's right. I don't even have my own thoughts straight... How pathetic. I could only look down. Yuri sighed.

"Are you bothered by the confession?"

"...No."

"Then, do you think you'd be happy if you dated her?"

"...Yes."

It's not a bother at all. And I'm sure I'd be happy. That's why I'm stuck.

"Do you... like her?"

I thought about her question, and answered.

".........Yes. I do."

For just an instant—Yuri made the saddest face I'd ever seen.

"But... I don't think I like her as much as she likes me."

Yuri's eyes widened. As for me... just saying it out loud made me realize. Ah... so that's it. That's the problem.

"I like her... but I'm not confident I can like her with my whole heart. Not enough to match her feelings."

Yuri listened, then processed my problem.

"Not confident... You mean you'd be tempted by other girls?"

"No, not that... I mean I'd be focused on other things."

I wouldn't be tempted. But I would be distracted.

"...What's your priority right now?"

My priority... That is...

"...Winning the student council election, studying to be a consultant, becoming someone who can support everyone... so I can stand beside them, proudly."

"That's a lot,"

Yuri said calmly.

"...And you're serious about all of it.

" She said it in a way that... I can't explain. It was a voice of resignation, as if to say,

"Well, that figures."

"Then just be honest,"

she said. Her tone was "You have no other choice, do you?"

"I'm guessing that's why she likes you. She'll understand."

"...Is it okay to be that... half-assed?"

"If she confessed just because of your looks, maybe not. But if you're popular, and she's been around you for a while, she'll get it."

Well, I don't remember anyone liking me for my looks... Maybe Yuri's right. This might just be what I want to hear, but... if it's Narika... I think she'd understand.

"But 'understanding' and 'forgiving' are two different things."

Yuri looked me straight in the eye.

"Your answer is that you're prioritizing your own goals over her feelings. Don't... expect this to all wrap up nicely."

"...You're right."

I might hurt Narika. She might come to hate me. I have to be prepared for that.

"If it were me, and you said that..."

"...If it were you?"

Yuri trailed off, then continued.

"First, I'd punch you."

That's harsh.

"Then I'd slap you." A follow-up.

"Then I'd use every curse word I know..."

A psychological attack, too.

"And then..."

Yuri let out a shaky breath.

"And then... I'd go home... and cry..."

Her voice trembled.

"...I see."

That's what I might do to Narika. I can still turn back. But...

"...Even so. There are things I have to do right now."

Sometimes, not wanting to hurt someone is just self-serving. Narika is an amazing person. As a person, she's a classmate I respect. That's why I can't get into a relationship with her just to satisfy my own conscience. If I'm going to date her... it has to be when I can do it proudly, without reservation. To give up my own ambitions for her... would be an insult to her.

"...I see."

Yuri said, her voice calm.

"Is that everything you wanted to ask?"

"Yeah... Yuri, thank you. This helped a lot."

Yuri gave me a "You're hopeless" smile. It was the kind of smile that said no matter what I chose, she'd be happy for me, just because I was moving forward.

I looked down at the lobby. The Konohana staff were heading for the exit. They must be done. Time for me to join them.

"...I'm so pathetic."

The words just came out.

"Talking to you... I just realized how indecisive I am."

And... I didn't want anyone to see that. That's why I hate asking for help. I didn't want to admit how weak I am. I'm just that small. And yet...

"No, it's not like you just became indecisive."

Yuri said, deadpan.

I couldn't help but smile. I should have expected that. Right. She's the only one... the only one I can talk to about anything. For me, Yuri is... the person I can rely on most. She's easier to talk to than anyone, more trustworthy than anyone. She's my invincible superhero, always there to back me up... That's just who she is.

"I hope you'll keep helping me out."

"Any time."

Yuri gave me a reliable grin.

"I'm your 'big sister,' after all."

After their talk, Itsuki met up with the Konohana servants and returned to the mansion.

Yuri went to find the kitchen staff for her ride home, but cleanup wasn't finished. She was about to jump in, but then remembered the head chef's words: "We'll handle this, you can rest." He felt bad about the last-minute request, and ignoring his kindness would just make him feel worse. So, she decided to wait.

"...'Big sister,' huh."

She thought back to what she'd just said.

Itsuki's problem was... so painfully normal. A standard, everyday love problem. It really is...

(...It's impossible now, isn't it.)

"Because I'm his big sister."

She'd repeated that charm hundreds of times, but now... it was just a bluff. Itsuki hadn't noticed, but it was only a matter of time.

You can't pretend to be a sister... to someone you see as a rival. ...To someone you see as a boy you like.

"...Ugh."

The lights in the hallway dimmed, plunging the hotel into near-darkness. Yuri stared out at nothing. She remembered what Itsuki had said about her:

You're greedy... but you're also kind, and you always end up compromising.

Maybe he's right. If she were really putting herself first, she would have told him to reject the girl. But she couldn't. She'd given him honest advice, to help him find his own answer.

In the end, it seems Itsuki will reject the girl... but Yuri felt no relief. Because she'd found out by accident. She'd learned something she never wanted to know.

(...Even if I confessed, his answer would be the same.)

She'd been shocked to hear he'd been confessed to. When he said he liked the girl, her heart had squeezed. And when he decided not to date her, Yuri was, honestly, a little happy. But... at the same time, she knew. It would be the same for me. Even if I confess... he'll give me the same answer.

"...Don't cry... I'm not the one who got rejected..."

Her vision blurred. I can't cry. I can't be sad. It's like I got rejected by default. Right now... the only one who has the right to cry... is the girl who actually confessed.

"Daaah—!!"

Yuri shouted, trying to scatter the feelings. It was louder than she'd intended.

(In the end... I've got good taste.)

She wanted to say one thing to that girl: I saw him first— ...Not that it's anything to be proud of.

...Think positive. What will that girl do? Maybe she'll give up. If she does... that's one less rival. If I were her, I'd do exactly what I told Itsuki: punch him, slap him, curse him out, and cry... ...But I'd never give up. Because that answer... was so him.

(...I won't back down.*)

Yuri denied Itsuki's words. I have things I'll never compromise on.

"——Alright!!"

She slapped her cheeks. Even if I get the same answer, I won't give up. No reason to be depressed. Maybe I'm just mad she confessed first. And maybe I feel a little guilty... for getting a cheat sheet to his answer.

(...By the way, it's probably not Konohana-san, right?)

When she heard "girl from Kiou," a few names popped up. From the party... it's not Hinako. So it's either the girl with the drill-curls, or the cold, samurai-like one... or someone else.

(Does Konohana-san know...?)

Should I tell her? ...No. Bad idea. She's the "perfect ojou-sama," but she's so fragile. She'd probably collapse. ...We both had to fall for the most difficult guy. Yuri sighed.

"...I can't afford to lose."

Her poor, kind, childhood friend from the neighborhood... had, somewhere along the line, grown into an amazing young man loved by all sorts of ojou-samas. Yuri thought it was all a bit ridiculous... ...but at the same time, she was incredibly proud.
