Rich Girl Caretaker Vol. 1 Chapter 3
The Tea Party
On the third day of my academy life. When the second period ended, Taisho and Asahi-san came to my seat.
"Tomonari, are you free after school today? You said you had to go home early before, but you can hang out with us once in a while, right?"
I smiled and replied to Taisho's invitation.
"I'm free today, so I can go."
"Oh, awesome!"
After discussing it with Shizune-san yesterday, the conclusion was that as long as I notified her before noon, I could make other plans after school. I'll report to Shizune-san before lunch break.
"Where do you want to go? If you don't have a place, we'll decide."
"Let's see... Since it's a special occasion, I'll leave it to you guys."
I had no idea where Kiou Academy students hang out after school, so to avoid suspicion, I decided to let them arrange it.
"Taisho-kun, where do you think? A day trip means we can't go abroad, right?"
"Taiwan is three hours one way, but... even if we just eat dinner and come back, it might be past midnight. Japan is probably better."
"What about Kyoto? The Kyō-takenoko (Kyoto bamboo shoots) are delicious this time of year."
"Kyoto, huh. I know a good shop."
Listening to their casual discussion... I broke out in a cold sweat. Right, I'd forgotten. These two are rich.
"Th-That is, I'm free, but I still have to be home tonight, so please choose somewhere relatively close..."
"I see. Then let's not go too far."
If I hadn't stopped them, we might have been heading to Kyoto after school...
"What about the café inside the academy? It's a good place to chat, right?"
"Ah, that's a good idea."
As Taisho agreed, I showed my confusion.
"This academy has several cafés suitable for tea parties. Some are quite high-class, but since they're inside the academy, there's no dress code, so they're popular with students."
"I see... This is the first I'm hearing of it."
If we go to a high-class café, I'll have to watch my etiquette. Even with Shizune-san's etiquette training, I'm still anxious.
"But this time, the goal is to deepen our friendship, so a place where we can chat casually is better. What about the café next to the student cafeteria?"
"Good point."
Asahi-san agreed with Taisho's proposal. I silently thanked Taisho in my heart. Thankfully, we don't have to go to some stuffy place.
"But with just the three of us, it feels a bit lonely."
"Yeah~ It'd be nice if we had two or three more people."
Taisho and Asahi-san said.
"Tomonari, if there's anyone else you want to invite, you can call them."
"Well... I'll think about it."
Lunch break. I was eating bento with Hinako on the roof.
"Itsuki... next, kombu."
"Yes, yes."
I picked up the kombu from the bento box with my chopsticks and brought it to Hinako's mouth.
"Mmm... it's passable."
No way, it should be super delicious. As expected of the Konohana heiress, she has high standards for food.
"I mean... can't you at least eat by yourself?"
"No~..."
"You're so good at acting, if you put your mind to it, eating by yourself should be no problem, right?"
"Neglect of duty. Overruled."
It's hard to argue with that. While Hinako chewed, I switched chopsticks and started eating my own bento.
"...Itsuki."
"Hm?"
"Are you... going out to play today?"
"It's not really playing, just going to the café with some classmates..."
"I'm going too."
Hinako said calmly.
"If you're going, I'm going too."
"That's... fine by me, but do you have permission from Shizune-san?"
"...I'll ask now."
Hinako said, taking her phone from her pocket. She clumsily dialed and put it to her ear.
'Ojou-sama? Is something the matter?'
Since she was making the call right next to me, I could also hear Shizune-san's voice.
"I want to go to the tea party with Itsuki."
'...Understood. Today's schedule was arranged to accommodate Itsuki-san, so Ojou-sama may also attend.'
I didn't expect her to agree so easily. Just like in my case, if Hinako didn't interact with anyone, it would arouse suspicion, so they must have already considered how to handle her after-school plans to some extent.
'Ojou-sama, are you sure? You're almost at your limit...'
"...Don't worry."
I didn't really understand that last part, but Hinako immediately hung up.
"So, that's that... please take care of me."
"Okay. The people scheduled to go are Taisho and Asahi-san. Do you know them?"
"...I know their names."
Hearing this vague answer, my face stiffened. Can she really chat with people she only knows by name?
"Um... You don't have to force yourself to come. This is really just socializing, it's not fun or anything. It'd be easier for you if you didn't come..."
"...If you're going, I'm going."
Although that reason was hard to accept, since she herself wanted to go, I guess I didn't need to stop her.
After lunch break, Hinako and I kept our distance and returned to the school building separately.
"That makes four of us..."
The members for the after-school tea party, including Hinako, totaled four. That's enough people... but as I thought about who else I could invite, one person came to mind.
"She said she wanted to make friends... I'll ask her."
And so, I began searching for that clumsy, lonely girl.
I quickly saw Narika Miyakojima, the person I was looking for. During P.E. class, I learned that Narika's class was 2-B. After confirming Hinako had returned to the classroom and was acting, I immediately headed to the 2-B classroom... It only took a few seconds to find Narika.
...She sticks out too much. Although I'd expected it, Narika was spending her lunch break all alone. She was sitting quietly, eating at the second-to-last seat by the window. From a distance, she was a dignified beauty, but if you looked closely, her brows were furrowed, and her upturned eyes gave off a "bad mood" vibe.
No wonder no one dared to approach her. I figured it was best for me to call out to her... Just as I was about to, Narika turned toward me.
"...? ...Itsuki!!"
Noticing me, she stopped eating and shot up from her seat. Unable to suppress the smile on her face, she walked straight toward me. At that moment, a commotion went through Class 2-B.
"Wait, no way...?"
"Miyakojima-san... called someone's name...?"
I heard the pitiful whispers, but Narika ignored them and walked right up to me. This seems to be drawing too much attention, I reflected, as Narika, her eyes shining, spoke:
"I-Is something wrong!? Are you looking for me!? I-I'm free right now! I can chat!"
So aggressive... It seems she was very lonely.
"C-Can we go somewhere else first?"
"O-O-Of course! Anywhere!"
Under the scrutiny of countless eyes, Narika and I left the school building. To be able to respond immediately in case Hinako did something unexpected, I didn't want to go too far from Class 2-A. We walked to the deserted back of the school building, and I spoke first.
"I have a lot to talk about, and I still haven't explained what happened yesterday."
"Yesterday... R-Right! I haven't forgiven you yet!"
Narika said, as if suddenly remembering, her face bright red and brimming with anger.
"Y-You used to be in charge of taking care of me, why... why are you suddenly Konohana-san's attendant! Y-Y-You... you traitor!!"
"Traitor... I took care of you a long time ago."
"S-Saying it was 'a long time ago' is too cruel! I still want to live with you!!"
"Eh... really?"
Seeing my surprise, Narika seemed to realize what she'd just said, and her whole face turned red.
"Wa-Waaaaah!? That didn't count! It didn't! Forget I said that!"
"Okay... Just calm down."
Is her condition... even worse than before? I felt sorry for her.
"About what I mentioned yesterday... to put it simply, I became an adopted son."
"...An adopted son?"
"Right. My current father is the boss of a mid-level company, and he has dealings with the Konohana family. So, while I'm attending Kiou Academy, I'm working at Konohana-san's house."
"Ngh... Wait, why would you do that? Even if he has dealings with the Konohana family, you don't need to work at their house."
I knew she'd react this way. I calmly recalled the cover story I'd crammed into my head last night.
"Do you know about the kadoi system?"
"I know. It's when you live and work at a rich person's house to learn etiquette. It was popular in Japan during the Meiji era and became common in Europe after the Middle Ages."
As expected, she's knowledgeable. Narika is also a Kiou Academy student; I can't compare to her intelligence.
"My working at the Konohana family house makes me the equivalent of a kadoi. After all, I don't know the first thing about etiquette. So I'm learning at their house while also helping with work."
"...I see."
Shizune-san really came up with an amazing setup; I'm genuinely impressed. The fabrication is perfect, too. Even if someone pries, this should be able to fend them off to some extent.
"B-But... in that case, you could have come to my house."
"There's no point telling me. All I know is that the Konohana family was the first one he thought of..."
"...Nghh."
Narika pouted. "Please don't tell anyone about this."
"...I know. An adopted son's position isn't very stable."
That's not the reason I want her to keep it secret, but she came to a reasonable conclusion on her own. That should be enough of an explanation about my relationship with Hinako.
"Narika, are you free after school today?"
"After school? I'm free."
"Do you want to go to the café and chat?"
"Chat at a café?... D-D-D-Don't tell me, is it a tea party!?"
"Something like that."
"I-I'll definitely go!"
Narika said, her eyes suddenly lighting up.
"To be honest, I've always wanted to go to a tea party...! Kiou Academy students deepen their friendships through tea parties, but I've never been invited... I thought I'd graduate without ever getting to go..."
"I-Is that so... That must have been tough."
Every time I talk to Narika, I can't help but feel pity for her.
"Also, the people coming so far, besides us, are Taisho and Asahi-san from Class A, and Konohana-san."
"...Huh? Th-There are other people...?"
"Right. It's technically my welcome party."
"Welcome party... Right, I heard you just transferred in a few days ago."
Transfer students aren't rare at Kiou Academy, but it still caused a small stir. It seems Narika also knew I had just transferred.
"I want to go, but... I'm worried... I-I'm afraid I won't know how to talk to everyone..."
"You're talking to me just fine, aren't you?"
"That's because... you know what I used to be like, so I don't have to act."
"In that case, why don't you stop acting in front of other people too?"
"I-If I could do that, I wouldn't be struggling so much!!"
Narika said, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Besides... it's not just my problem."
"...What do you mean?"
"This might sound like bragging, but the Miyakojima family is a prominent family, so most students get scared when they find out who I am... It's not just that I'm bad at interacting, they're afraid of me from the start."
"...I get it."
Hearing that, the problem indeed doesn't just lie with Narika.
"In that respect, Konohana-san is amazing. Even though she stole you, and I really don't want to admit it... I'm envious of her popularity. Normally, with a famous name like Konohana, almost all students would be intimidated. But... everyone can talk to Konohana-san so casually. How does she do it...?"
Narika said, lowering her eyes. I have a good idea why Hinako is so admired—it's an act. Hinako thoroughly performs the role of the perfect, beloved ojou-sama. But I can't reveal that.
"I don't know why everyone admires Konohana-san, but... maybe you'll find a clue if you talk to her."
"...That might be true. And since you'll be there, I'll definitely go to the after-school tea party."
Narika clenched her fists, as if building up her courage.
"B-But, is it really okay for me to go? What if I go and make everyone uncomfortable..."
"It'll be fine. Probably."
"Probably...?"
"It'll definitely be fine."
I sighed and encouraged the anxious Narika. Asahi-san and Taisho don't dislike Narika. Asahi-san, in particular, said she'd tried to talk to Narika before to get to know her, so she shouldn't have a problem with Narika joining.
I said goodbye to Narika and was just about to head back to Class A. From the end of the hallway, I heard the voices of two female students.
"Th-Thank you for your help!"
"You're welcome."
The student with the golden ringlets responded to the girl's thanks with a noble attitude. Seeing that conspicuous appearance, I unconsciously called her name.
"Tennouji-san?"
"Oh my, if it isn't..."
Tennouji-san looked at me and squinted. Come to think of it, our parting last time was very abrupt. If she remembers what happened, things could get tricky, so I quickly looked for another topic.
"Um, what are you doing?"
"Nothing, the class monitor was carrying materials for class, I was just helping out."
I felt this way when she helped me find the wallet, too, but she's much kinder than she looks. It seems she's normally very helpful.
"By the way, I heard. You're a transfer student, aren't you."
"Yes. I'm Itsuki Tomonari, I transferred in the day before yesterday."
I just remembered I hadn't introduced myself, so I gave my name.
"Well then, Tomonari-kun... You seem to be going to school with Hinako Konohana. That's the rumor."
Right, Tennouji-san sees Hinako as her rival. It would be trouble if she became hostile toward me too, so I'd better clear this up.
"On the first day, she guided me to the academy, so we were together, but not yesterday or today. My family and Konohana-san's family have some dealings, that's all."
"I wonder about that. Are you not part of the Konohana-faction?"
"Konohana-faction?"
Tennouji-san explained to the puzzled me.
"It's my own term. There are many students at Kiou Academy who worship Hinako Konohana. It's a general term for those people."
"...I see."
So it's like a fan club. I didn't expect Kiou Academy to have such a mundane side.
"...Tennouji-san, do you hate Konohana-san?"
"I-I don't hate her! It's just that Hinako Konohana dilutes my natural radiance!"
Tennouji-san said, suddenly flustered.
"I acknowledge Hinako Konohana's abilities. She has beauty to rival my own, and grades to rival my own. It's impossible for her not to be popular."
"That subtle self-praise..."
If only she could share some of that confidence with Narika.
"But Hinako Konohana... she's left me, the heiress of the Tennouji Group, far behind! Everyone fawns over her too much! ...The Tennouji Group's business scale is on par with the Konohana Group, and in terms of history, the Tennouji Group is even older! Which means! I should be! I should be the most prominent student at Kiou Academy!!"
Tennouji shouted, glaring fiercely at me.
"If you're not in the Konohana-faction, you should think so too, right?" "Eh? W-Well, I guess..."
"I knew it, I knew it!! I just can't stomach it! Why is that woman more conspicuous than me! That eight-sided beauty... I bet she's just a lazy good-for-nothing at home!"
She just casually dropped the truth... I'd better keep my mouth shut.
"...Is the reason her personality? No, if one is high-born, one should show a resolute attitude, as I do. Smiling too much may damage one's dignity, and as for teaching classmates... teaching too much is counterproductive. Besides, that woman, the other day she—"
Listening to Tennouji-san's endless muttering, I shared my thought.
"Tennouji-san, you know a lot about Konohana-san."
"What!? N-N-N-No I don't! Knowing this much is normal!"
Tennouji-san's face turned beet red as she vehemently denied it.
"Hinako Konohana and I are... yes, we are rivals! Rivals! So it's only natural that I research her! 'Know your enemy, know yourself, and you need not fear a hundred battles.'"
As she brought up a difficult proverb, I thought a little about Tennouji-san's personality. —I remember what Narika said. If you carry the name of a prominent family, those around you will be intimidated. Carrying the illustrious name of the Tennouji Group, perhaps she, like Narika, is lonely. But Hinako... Hinako, whose family is on the same level, could surely build an equal relationship with Tennouji-san. Tennouji-san must have sensed that, which is why she's so fixated on Hinako.
"Um... Are you free after school today?"
"After school? I'm free, but why do you ask?"
"We're having a tea party at the café next to the student cafeteria. Konohana-san will be there too."
"H-Hinako Konohana!?"
Tennouji-san's eyes shot wide open.
"Y-You're trying to pull me into the Konohana-faction, aren't you...!!"
"Do you have to be that guarded...? It's just a simple invitation."
She's way too sensitive about Hinako.
"I-If that woman insists I attend, I could grace her with my presence."
"No, Konohana-san didn't say anything..."
"...She didn't?"
"No."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...Ah, she might have mentioned it. Would you like to come?"
The atmosphere was getting more and more awkward, so I told a white lie. Tennouji-san's eyes lit up. It seems she really wanted to go.
"V-Very well! Then I shall attend!"
"'Know your enemy, know yourself...'"
I already heard that one.
And so, after school. Taisho and Asahi-san were shocked when they saw the members gathered at the café.
"We said you could invite anyone... but this lineup is just insane."
Taisho said, looking at the ojou-samas before him. Six men and women were gathered around a white round table. Including the initially invited me, Taisho, and Asahi-san, plus the ones I invited: Hinako, Narika, and Tennouji-san. None of the three ojou-samas had an aura that blended in. Hinako was still acting the part, a gentle smile on her face. Narika was fidgeting restlessly beside her. Tennouji-san was gracefully bringing a teacup to her lips.
"Tomonari-kun, how do you know them? Why do you know all these heavyweights on your third day of transfer...?"
"If you ask me how... it just naturally happened..."
Hinako aside, I invited Narika and Tennouji-san because I thought it was a good chance for them to deepen their relationships. But thinking about it calmly, this lineup might actually be pretty heavyweight. The heiresses of the Konohana, Miyakojima, and Tennouji families, all gathered in one place, must be a rare sight.
"Right, this is Tomonari-kun's welcome party."
Tennouji-san placed her cup on the table and looked at me.
"It's a bit late, but congratulations on your enrollment. Kiou Academy's educational policy is stricter than other schools, but graduating from here guarantees a great future. I look forward to your future success."
"Th-Thank you."
Though flustered, I expressed my thanks. Hearing that from the dignified Tennouji-san made me happy.
"Since some of us are speaking for the first time, I'll introduce myself. I am Mirei Tennouji, from the Tennouji Group."
Following the flow of introductions, Taisho and Asahi-san continued.
"I'm Katsuya Taisho. My family runs a shipping business."
"I'm Karen Asahi. My family is in retail... mainly consumer electronics."
After those two, it was Hinako and Narika's turn.
"I am Hinako Konohana. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"I-I'm Narika Miyakojima. P-Pleased to meet you."
She flubbed it... I pretended not to notice. Hinako's and Tennouji-san's expressions didn't change; either they didn't notice or didn't care. On the other hand, Taisho and Asahi-san both looked astonished, as if to say, "The Miyakojima-san flubbed her line?"
"I am Itsuki Tomonari. My family runs an IT company."
Finally, I gave my name and family business. After everyone was introduced, Tennouji-san spoke first.
"There's one thing I want to make clear. You don't need to worry about my family status. Please speak to me as you normally would... Taisho-kun and Asahi-san, your usual way of speaking is more casual, isn't it?"
"Ngh... Yeah. Now that you've pointed it out, there's no point in pretending."
"Hehe, that's right. Then I'll go back to normal, too."
The awkward atmosphere between them vanished in an instant, and they relaxed. Next, Tennouji-san looked at Hinako.
"Konohana-san, we occasionally see each other at tea parties, don't we."
"Yes. I am always in your care, Tennouji-san."
"............Is that sarcasm...?"
Tennouji-san gave a stiff smile. However, Hinako didn't seem to notice, leisurely sipping her tea. Narika and Tennouji-san were both beautiful girls, but Hinako was in a class of her own. Her elegant way of holding the teacup captivated everyone present.
"Th-That's right! Konohana-san! We're in the same class... do you know who I am?"
"Of course I do, Asahi-san. Thank you for always bringing joy to Class A. Because of you, the classroom atmosphere is always pleasant."
"Ah, ahaha, you're welcome... Wow, getting a compliment from Konohana-san makes me so happy."
Asahi-san tried to cover her grinning face with both hands.
"W-What about me? Do you know me? Konohana-san!"
"I certainly know Taisho-kun as well. Your friendly attitude, making no distinction between anyone, is very charming."
"Oh, oh...!! I feel like I've just accumulated a ton of good karma...!"
He hadn't, but he looked happy enough to fly.
"Ngh... Why am I not being asked...!"
Tennouji-san seemed unhappy that Hinako was monopolizing the attention. The topic had just naturally shifted that way, but just in case, I changed the subject.
"Narika, have you spoken with anyone here at a tea party before?"
"N-No. Even for off-campus events, I only attend the ones I'm required to."
I suspect you're only invited to the mandatory ones, right...? As I muttered inwardly, I noticed everyone's gaze was focused on me.
"...Narika?"
Someone said, seeming to mind that I called Narika by her first name. I was wondering if I should explain my relationship with Narika first, when—
"I-I've known Itsuki since we were ten. He invited me to this tea party because of that."
"Oh~! So that's how it is!"
Asahi-san looked surprised by Narika's explanation. Narika lowered her head. She was just being shy, but her stiff expression probably made people misunderstand that she was angry. Perhaps it's because of this personality that she's isolated. Since I'm the one who invited Narika, I have to help her.
"I think everyone misunderstands Narika. She's not a scary person. She just spent most of her childhood at home, so she's not good at talking to people."
"...Is that so?"
"Yes. Those rumors are all false, too."
I said emphatically to the surprised Asahi-san.
"I-Itsuki............!!"

Narika looked at me gratefully, tears welling in her eyes. I hope she can take this chance to make friends...
"I believe the Miyakojima family is in the sporting goods business?"
Tennouji-san asked.
"Th-That's right. Um... you know a lot."
"You're too modest. Everyone at this academy knows of the Miyakojima family. Besides, those rumors... anyone would know they aren't true with a little investigation. I rarely see you at social functions. What do you usually do?"
"U-Usually...? I train at home..."
"Train?"
"My family has a dojo, so working up a sweat there is my daily routine. R-Recently, I've also had to test many of our family's products."
"I see. A very fulfilling life."
Tennouji-san seemed genuinely impressed. Next to them, Asahi-san and Hinako also started chatting.
"Since we have the chance, I want to ask Konohana-san what you do at home. Do you study all the time?"
"Studying is important, but I also value rest. Like reading... and enjoying snacks."
"Oh~ So Konohana-san likes snacks too. What kind of snacks do you eat?"
"Let's see... Scones, things like that."
Liar. You're always eating potato chips.
"By the way, Konohana-san and Tomonari-kun's families are acquainted, right?"
Asahi-san asked Hinako.
"Yes. My father and Tomonari-kun's father are acquaintances."
"Did you only meet recently?"
"Yes, but we now have opportunities to interact like this."
Hinako replied with a smile, and Asahi-san chimed in,
"Ohh."
"It's suspicious, you know. Is that really the only relationship you two have?"
"Whoa, whoa, Asahi, don't just guess wildly."
Taisho said with a wry smile.
"But, parents being acquaintances sounds like an arranged match, and it's a set formula for a relationship to develop from there. Maybe they already have a super-friendship relationship...?"
I could tell from her tone she was mostly joking. But in response to Asahi-san's question, Hinako said nothing, merely sipping her tea with elegance. ...Hey, why are you suddenly quiet? Faced with this suggestive silence, Asahi-san, who had been joking, gradually turned serious. Tennouji-san raised an eyebrow in surprise, and Narika looked at me with a pale face.
"N-No... that's not it."
Since Hinako wouldn't say a word, I had to answer for her.
"As Konohana-san said earlier, we don't have any special relationship, just that our families are acquainted. Besides... I'm not worthy of Konohana-san."
One is the heiress of the Konohana Group, known throughout Japan, and the other is the successor to a mid-level company. Even my cover identity is worlds apart.
"Whether you're worthy or not... Tomonari-kun is busy with classes right now, you don't have the energy for that, right?"
"Exactly."
As I laughed and agreed with Asahi-san, Narika, next to me, looked down.
"Hmph... Liar."
Narika muttered, just loud enough for me to hear. Since she lowered her voice, she must intend to keep her promise of silence, but she's still very unhappy about me working at the Konohana house. Still—the situation was generally going well. Narika was blending in with everyone, and Tennouji-san, aside from her rivalry with Hinako, was friendly. I was secretly glad I had invited them to the tea party. Feeling relaxed, I drank the tea on the table. Just then, Tennouji-san looked over at me.
"Tomonari-kun, when drinking tea, it's more elegant to bring the cup to your mouth, not your mouth to the cup."
"I-Is that so... Thank you for the advice."
The moment I relaxed, my sloppiness showed. Looking closely, everyone else was drinking their tea that way... I need to reflect. I remembered I was at this academy under a false identity, unlike everyone else.
"Tomonari, were you at a normal high school before coming here?"
"Yes, so I'm not very confident in my etiquette..."
I nodded in response to Taisho's question.
"Speaking of which, I heard from a friend in my class during my first year that regular schools have a lot of interesting 'cultures,' like... 'splitting the bill'."
"Splitting the bill?"
Taisho looked puzzled by Asahi-san's words. Everyone else also looked confused, so it seemed I had to be the one to explain.
"Splitting the bill is when you divide the cost evenly when paying... Kiou Academy students don't do that?"
"No. Isn't it faster if one person pays for everything?"
"That's true, but then doesn't it become that person's treat?"
"If you're worried about it, you can just pay next time. Basically, no one really cares who pays. Shouldn't the person who invited, or the person who wants to pay, just pay?"
Is it really that casual...? If someone treated me, I'd definitely feel indebted.
"Also, isn't there something called 'stealing a borrowed item'?"
"Yeah, yeah, that's when you just steal something you borrowed, right? I don't get why you'd steal, just buy it."
"No, that's not a 'culture'..."
As Asahi-san and Taisho got excited, I cut in to correct their understanding. 'Stealing a borrowed item' is rare even among us commoners, and even when it happens, it's mostly by accident.
"Tomonari, did your previous school not have cultures like that?"
"Let's see..."
Since I knew they were just asking out of pure curiosity, I tried to think of a topic Taisho and the others would find interesting.
"Do you guys know the Three-Second Rule?"
"Three-Second Rule?"
Asahi-san looked puzzled. No one here knew it, so I continued explaining.
"This rule mainly applies to food. If food falls on the ground, as long as you pick it up within three seconds, you can still eat it."
"Wh-What..."
"It's actually simple... I'll demonstrate."
I said, picking up a dessert from the middle of the table. It would be a waste to drop the whole thing, so I bit off half and left the other half.
"When you're eating, if it falls like this..."
I intentionally dropped the dessert on the table, then quickly picked it up.
"If you pick it up within three seconds like this, it's still edible... That's the Three-Second Rule."
"Oh... How interesting."
Is that attitude one of contempt? No, it's probably not contempt, but... even if they're impressed, I don't know how to react. This isn't good table manners, so it's best not to copy it. Just as I was about to warn them—
"Like this?"
Hinako, sitting right across from me, copied my action, dropping her dessert on the table. Then, she picked it up, and her cherry-like mouth began to chew.
"J-Just like that..."
My voice trembled as I affirmed the cutely smiling Hinako. Seeing the prim and proper Hinako perform such a vulgar act, everyone present was shocked. Just then, Tennouji-san cleared her throat lightly.
"Commoners sometimes have interesting ideas, but... I'm not very fond of this Three-Second Rule."
She said, placing her teacup on the table.
"However, I can understand the feeling that it might be fine within three seconds. If I get the chance, I might try it."
"It's not a hygiene issue, it's just bad manners."
Tennouji-san scolded, and Asahi-san, who hadn't seemed serious, immediately replied,
"You're right, it is bad manners."
After that, the tea party continued. The memorable first tea party ended peacefully without any major incidents.
After leaving the café, we walked straight to the academy gate. Several black sedans were already parked in front.
"Thank you for waiting, Ojou-sama."
"Oh, come on, don't call me Ojou-sama..."
Asahi-san said with a wry smile, getting into the car held open by the driver. Immediately after, Taisho got into the same car.
"...Hm? Taisho-kun and Asahi-san are going home together?"
"Yeah, my house is close to Asahi's, and our families have known each other for a long time."
"Our families' servants take turns picking us up."
Just like the public relationship between me and Hinako, Asahi-san and Taisho's families were also acquainted.
"We'll get going first."
"That was fun today. See you tomorrow."
The car carrying the two of them drove off. Tennouji-san's family car was also waiting nearby.
"Well then, I shall take my leave."
Tennouji-san said, giving a slight nod. Several staff members in suits stood by her side. Unlike Asahi-san's driver, they looked like guards, calmly surveying the surroundings.
"H-Hinako Konohana!"
"Yes."
Compared to the flustered Tennouji-san calling her name, Hinako replied with her usual gentle smile.
"Th-Though this was the first time meeting you at a private tea party... it was surprisingly pleasant! N-N-Next time, I hope we can have a deeper exchange, regarding academics or our family businesses!"
"Yes. I look forward to our next long talk."
Tennouji-san smoothly arranged their next meeting. Smiling happily, Tennouji-san then turned a serious face to me.
"Ahem... Tomonari-kun."
She cleared her throat, then continued.
"You were very confident today. You're more charming that way."
Hearing her say that, I froze for a second.
"Th-Thank you."
I never expected a compliment from her, so my reaction was a bit delayed. Tennouji-san's lips curved into a slight smile, and she turned to board her sedan.
"...You two seem to get along well."
Narika muttered.
"That was just flattery."
"No, Tennouji-san is an honest person. You can take her compliment... To get praise from Tennouji-san on your third day of transfer is amazing."
Narika said, seeming somewhat dissatisfied. It seems unlike Tennouji-san, she's not one to give compliments honestly.
"Thank you for waiting, Ojou-sama, Itsuki-wakasama."
Just then, two black sedans pulled up nearby, and people got out, calling to us.
"...Shizune-san?"
Shizune-san, in her maid uniform, appeared before us and bowed.
"You must be Narika Miyakojima-sama? My name is Shizune Tsurumi, a servant of the Konohana family."
Narika jumped, as if not expecting to be spoken to.
"Regarding Itsuki-wakasama's situation, I believe he has explained it to you. Itsuki-wakasama's family is a vendor with close ties to our company. We humbly request your discretion in this matter."
"I-I know... Itsuki explained it to me. I understand. I won't tell anyone, please rest assured."
"Thank you for your understanding."
Shizune-san bowed respectfully. It seems she came out here specifically to give this reminder. Narika knew I was working at the Konohana house, so she wasn't surprised that Hinako and I were riding home in the same car.
"Has your ride not arrived yet?"
"Yeah, it should be here soon..."
Narika stopped mid-sentence. She took her phone from her pocket and put it to her ear; it seems she got a call. After the call ended, she let out a small sigh.
"What's wrong?"
"Oh... there's traffic, so my ride will be late. Luckily, the car is already nearby, so I'm going to walk to it. You guys go ahead."
Even if she tells us to go home— Because of the kidnapping incident the other day, I really didn't feel comfortable leaving Narika alone.
"Shizune-san, I'll see Narika off."
Hearing me say that, both Shizune-san and Narika looked surprised. I looked at Narika.
"The car is nearby, right? Let's walk there together."
"I-I'm happy you offered, but... is it okay?"
I glanced at Shizune-san. She seemed to understand my intention and nodded.
"It's no problem. Ojou-sama has her schedule, so we will head back first. I will dispatch another car for you immediately. Please take that car."
Shizune-san finished, then looked at Hinako who was already in the car.
"Ojou-sama, is this arrangement acceptable?"
"It is."
Hinako said with a smile.
"Thank you."
After saying thanks, I left to see Narika off.
◆
As the car pulled away from the academy, Hinako let out a deep breath.
"So~ tired~..."
"Good work."
Hinako stopped acting the ojou-sama, sighing lazily. Then she sat with her knees bent in the back seat, looking back through the rear window.
"Ngh... Itsuki is with someone else..."
"If you didn't want that, you could have refused."
"...Could I have kept him?"
"My apologies. It would indeed have been unnatural for your 'ojou-sama' persona to keep Itsuki-kun in that situation."
Seeing Narika off was a gentlemanly thought. The perfect ojou-sama couldn't stop him based on her own feelings.
"Shizune... do you know the Three-Second Rule?"
Hinako asked with a proud smile. There's no way she knows. I can teach her. Hinako was secretly scheming, but unfortunately—
"Yes, I do."
"...Eh?"
"It is a famous superstition, and much research has been done on it. The study by an American high school girl that won an Ig Nobel Prize is quite famous, although in her case, it was the 'five-second rule'."
"...Ngh."
Knowing that she knew more than her, Hinako pouted. Seeing Hinako like this, Shizune chuckled lightly.
"Ever since Itsuki-kun arrived... you've really changed."
"...Have I?"
"You have attended tea parties before, but those were all at Master Kagen's direction. This is the first time you've attended one voluntarily, isn't it?"
"Hmm... Maybe so."
Hinako said, unconcerned. Seeing her reaction, Shizune looked at her with worry.
"Ojou-sama... are you feeling alright?"
"...I think I'm at my limit."
Hinako said listlessly.
◆
"Whew..."
After Hinako's car left, Narika let out a deep breath.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, just... I can finally relax..."
It seems the tension has eased, and she feels more relaxed.
"You said you were awkward, but you seemed to be chatting with everyone just fine."
"That wasn't my own strength. Everyone helped me, so I just barely managed not to mess up..."
She might be right. Asahi-san and Tennouji-san, in particular, were very considerate of Narika. Asahi-san livened up the atmosphere so Narika could join the conversation, and Tennouji-san kept casually throwing questions to Narika, bringing her into the center of the topic.
"Itsuki... thank you so much."
Suddenly, Narika thanked me sincerely.
"If you hadn't been here, I would have been alone until graduation."
"...It's not that big of a deal. I just helped a little."
"No. I know my own personality. Today will be a day that changes my life."
Narika said, looking straight at me.
"Itsuki, you really are... my hero. When we were little, you taught me about the outside world... and this time, you saved me from loneliness."
That's a huge exaggeration. I didn't do anything that great.
"That's why... it's so unfair."
Narika said, looking down.
"Unfair... Unfair, unfair, unfair! Konohana-san is too unfair!!"
"...You're still on about that."
"Of course I am! I'll never stop! Because it's too much! W-We finally meet again, so why are you at Konohana-san's house!"
"No matter how much you complain... I can only say it's because of my parents."
"Ngh...! Y-You said you were a kadoi. What else do you do!? You're there to work, right!?"
"Even though it's work, it's just daily life support."
"Konohana-san doesn't need anyone to support her! That person is already perfect!"
She's troublesome precisely because she's not perfect, but of course, I couldn't say that, so I stayed silent.
"...When does that job end?"
"It's undecided at the moment..."
"A-After it ends, will you come to my house? You miss it, don't you?"
I do miss it, but I'll be employed by the Konohana family until graduation, so it's unlikely I'll be able to go.
"I'll go when I feel like it."
"That's such a non-committal answer!?"
I'm not Tennouji-san; I can be non-committal once in a while.
"Today's training is over. Good work."
"Th-Thank you for your instruction..."
I said, covered in sweat in the Konohana family dojo. Even though it was the day of the tea party, the training wasn't canceled. In fact, the content was even heavier than usual, leaving me exhausted.
"Itsuki~ bath~..."
Just then, the dojo door opened, and Hinako appeared.
"...It's already this late."
The time was 10 PM. I was planning to go to the bathroom too, to wash off all this sweat—
"Ojou-sama, I have a few words to say to Itsuki-kun. Could you please return to your room first?"
"Mmm... okay. Be quick."
Agreeing to Shizune-san's request, Hinako left the dojo.
"You wanted to talk to me?"
"Yes. It won't take long."
Shizune-san's attitude was very serious.
"I won't go into detail, as I don't want to keep Ojou-sama waiting... but Ojou-sama's physical condition has been poor lately. Please be mindful."
"Physical condition?... But she seemed fine at the tea party."
Was she pushing herself?
"Strictly speaking, her condition will be bad soon."
"...?"
I was puzzled, not understanding what she meant.
"Just remember to be mindful of her condition. Now, please go to Ojou-sama's room."
Shizune-san finished speaking and began cleaning the dojo. I didn't understand her intention, but if all I have to do is be mindful, I'll pay more attention.
After entering Hinako's room, I changed into my swimsuit in the changing room and entered the bathroom.
"Ah~... Itsuki's here..."
"...Sorry to keep you waiting."
Hinako was already soaking and warmed up. I walked over to her and immediately started washing her hair.
"Is it itchy anywhere?"
"Nope~..."
Washing Hinako's hair is a daily routine, so I had Shizune-san teach me how. Warm the scalp with the palm of my hand, wash thoroughly with shampoo, then use conditioner, rubbing it in to let it soak into the hair.
"...Speaking of which, Shizune-san really made something incredible."
While washing Hinako's hair, I turned my head to look behind me. There was a shower stall, essentially a bathroom within the bathroom.
"You can't wash your body properly in a swimsuit, right?"
Shizune-san, in her consideration, had built a shower stall just for washing our bodies.
"Hinako, can you pass me that oke (bucket) over there?"
"OK..."
Is that an oke/OK pun...? The bucket seemed to have been washed away by the water. I asked Hinako to grab it as it was about to fall into the tub. But, after picking up the bucket, Hinako dropped it again with a clatter.
"...Ah."
As if struck by inspiration, she quickly picked up the bucket.
"Three-second rule."
"...Yes."
Hinako looked so proud, I had no idea how to react.
"This... it's fun."
"Hearing you say that makes sharing it worthwhile."
Though I wish she wouldn't do it in front of everyone.
"After we split up today... what did you talk about with Miyakojima-san...?"
"What did we talk about... Just that the tea party was fun, that's about it."
"...Oh."
Hinako replied, her tone unreadable as to whether she believed me.
"You are... my attendant."
She muttered.
"............Don't leave me."
"What did you say?"
She spoke so softly, I couldn't hear her. But even when I asked again, she didn't respond. Her body slowly tilted toward me, suddenly pressing against mine. I couldn't help but panic.
"Hey... you'll catch a cold if you fall asleep in the bath."
I said, lightly shaking her body, but she said nothing.
"Hinako...?"
Her condition was clearly abnormal. I looked at her face. She was sweating, and her breathing seemed pained.
"—Hinako!?"
After Hinako fainted in the bathroom, I immediately carried her to her room and called for Shizune-san. At first, I thought she'd just overheated, but she was gasping as if she couldn't breathe. After quickly drying her off, Shizune-san checked her condition.
"Ojou-sama has a slight fever."
Shizune-san said, looking at Hinako lying on the bed.
"Let's have Ojou-sama rest in her room for now."
"...Yes."
Shizune-san had already prepared the nursing supplies. Before I left the room, she deftly changed Hinako into her pajamas, then fed her medicine and water. Her practiced movements made me feel a little strange.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing... You're very calm."
"Because this happens periodically."
"Periodically...?"
Shizune-san explained to the confused me.
"Ojou-sama collapses due to the stress of her usual 'act'."
For a moment, I didn't understand what she meant.
"Stress from acting... You don't mean her usual act, do you?"
"Yes... She's playing a character completely different from her true self. Of course it's stressful."
Shizune-san said calmly. Her words hit me with a huge shock. Hinako's usual acting is certainly flawless, but as soon as she gets home, she reverts to her lazy self. And while she complains about it being a pain, she doesn't seem to find it that hard. I thought she might be depressed about having to act the ojou-sama... but I never thought it was stressful enough to make her collapse.
"W-Wait. How can you say that so calmly? She's so stressed she fainted! This isn't a minor thing..."
"She'll recover in two or three days. You don't need to worry."
"But, if she's going to collapse like this, she should stop acting—"
"—Watch your station."
Shizune-san glared at me fiercely.
"This is the Konohana family's consensus. It will not be swayed by personal feelings... Of course, Ojou-sama understands this."
Hinako understands, too. I mulled over those words. The pretext of "it's for Hinako's own good" doesn't apply. She understands, and on top of that, she acts until she collapses. In this situation, who am I supposed to be angry at...? Where am I supposed to direct this feeling?
"When Ojou-sama is in public, she concentrates fully on her acting. Therefore, to rest properly when she's at home, she lets herself relax. The reason Ojou-sama is always so lazy in the mansion can be attributed to the fatigue from her acting."
"...In other words, as a rebound from acting, Hinako becomes especially lazy when no one is watching?"
"Correct. Of course, her original personality is also a factor, but... on her days off, when she doesn't need to act, her spirits are much higher than usual."
I didn't know anything. So this was Hinako's situation.
"Itsuki-kun, it's about time for you to sleep. Otherwise, it will affect your classes tomorrow."
"...Hinako has collapsed, and I still have to go to the academy?"
"Of course. Considering your academic ability, you must not miss class if possible."
"But I'm Hinako's attendant..."
"This is a matter of proper roles. I am well-versed in how to care for Ojou-sama when she has collapsed."
After saying that, Shizune-san looked straight at me.
"I am going to focus on caring for Ojou-sama. Please return to your own room."
The next day, I went to Kiou Academy alone.
"Yo, Tomonari! Yesterday was fun!"
"...Yeah."
After I sat down at my desk, Taisho came over to talk cheerfully. While chatting with Taisho, Asahi-san also came over.
"Speaking of which, Konohana-san isn't at school today."
"Oh... probably the usual."
Listening to Asahi-san and Taisho's conversation, I couldn't help but feel puzzled.
"The usual?"
"Right, you wouldn't know. Konohana-san occasionally takes time off. Heard it's to help with the family business... It's tough being her."
Taisho explained. I gave a noncommittal reply and started thinking. —So that's the cover story. The fact that Hinako periodically collapses isn't known to her classmates. Perhaps the truth is hidden from everyone at the academy. But in that case—doesn't that mean no one is worried about her? Hinako already hides her true nature with her acting, so who is really by her side? When Hinako is suffering, who is there to help her? My heart filled with mixed emotions, and just like that, school ended.
"Good work."
When I boarded the car that came to pick me up, Shizune-san said from the passenger seat. With Hinako absent, I had the spacious back seat to myself, but I couldn't feel happy about it.
"Shizune-san, how is Hinako's condition...?"
"Ojou-sama is still recuperating."
So she hasn't recovered yet.
"...How long will it take for her to get better?"
"Let's see... given her state, she should recover by tomorrow or the day after. Fortunately, the weekend starts tomorrow, so she will be better by Monday."
Thank goodness today is Friday. No... that's wrong. When Monday comes, she'll have to go to school again, which means she'll have to act again. Why did things turn out this way? The name of the person who definitely knew the answer flashed through my mind.
"Excuse me... Is Kagen-san not coming?"
Shizune-san, in the passenger seat, looked straight ahead and answered my question.
"The Master is busy with work and is currently at the main building."
"But Hinako has collapsed."
"Master Kagen is the leader of the Konohana Group. From his position, he cannot easily stop working, even if Ojou-sama has collapsed."
Emphasizing how we live in different worlds... that's a bit cowardly. My common sense doesn't apply here. No matter what you say, it's wrong. That's what she implied.
"Then Hinako's mother...?"
Shizune-san paused for a moment before answering this question.
"...The Mistress has passed away."
I never expected that answer. Come to think of it, Hinako's mother had never been mentioned once. If she's no longer alive, it's not a topic that can be brought up easily.
"............I see."
Another thing I didn't know... Of course. I've only been an attendant for a short time; it's natural there's a lot I don't know. But—her father, Kagen-san, isn't visiting, and her mother has passed away. So, right now, as Hinako suffers, how many people are there to stay by her side? One of them... can't it be me?
"...Can we cancel today's training?"
"No. You still have much to learn."
"Then I'd like to finish early. I'll work twice as hard."
When I said that, Shizune-san looked a little surprised.
"...Understood. In that case, we will proceed at 1.5 times the normal speed."
It sounds like it'll be hell, but I'll just have to face it.
After arriving at the mansion, Shizune-san was true to her word. Prep, review, etiquette lectures, self-defense—all of it was done at a faster pace than usual. By the time it was over, I had a splitting headache from exhaustion, but I also had two hours of free time earlier than usual.
"That's all for today's training."
"Th-Thank you for your instruction... May I go to Hinako's room?"
"You may. I will be heading over shortly as well. Please look after Ojou-sama until then."
After leaving the dojo, I first returned to my room to quickly shower off the sweat, then headed to Hinako's room. Hinako's room was dim, with only an orange-red night-light on. Watching my step, I walked toward the bed where Hinako was sleeping.
"Ah, Itsuki's here..."
Hinako, lying in bed, noticed my arrival.
"Sorry, did I wake you?"
"It's okay... I was just spacing out..."
From what Shizune-san said, she slept almost all day, so she must be wide awake.
"Itsuki... thank you..."
Hinako suddenly thanked me.
"You came to see me... I'm so happy..."
"...Of course I'd come to see you. I'm your attendant, after all."
"...Hehe."
Hinako, who had been anxious and lonely, smiled with relief.
"If there's anything you want, just let me know."
After I said that, Hinako turned her body toward me and spoke:
"Then............ hold my hand..."
Hinako slowly extended her hand.
"That's an easy request."

I granted her request and took her hand. Such a small hand. Hinako, who is nobler and more excellent than anyone at the academy, her hand—it was so delicate, small, and fleeting, as if it would break with just a touch.
"...Asleep?"
Hinako's breathing became soft and steady. Holding her hand, I looked around the room. It was a huge room for just one person; maybe that added to her loneliness. It's common to feel especially lonely when you're sick. That's exactly why someone needs to be by her side.
...Can I be that person? The thought crossed my mind. Does Hinako truly feel at ease just by having me here? "Attendant" is, after all, a job. I don't know how Hinako really feels about me. A replaceable attendant, a convenient servant... I trust that she doesn't look down on me that much. However, our sense of distance is closer than a normal attendant, yet we're both very calm regarding any romantic relationship. While it's comfortable, I've often felt that our relationship is very strange.
...Thinking about this now is just needless worry. At the very least, I know she trusts me. So, right now, I have to respond to that trust.
"Hinako... don't worry."
Sweat stuck the amber hair to Hinako's forehead. I gently brushed the hair aside and stroked her head.
"Mmm..."
Just then, Hinako smiled softly.
"............Dad..."
That soft murmur from her dream made me aware of my duty as an attendant. —I get it. I know how Hinako sees me. At the same time, I understood what that strange sense of distance was. —Family. Hinako must be longing for family. Past events flashed through my mind. Sleeping on my lap, bathing together... what she wants from me is the warmth of family.
"...I understand how you feel."
I said, patting Hinako's head.
"Family... it's definitely something to long for."
I thought of my own family. My parents are hopeless losers... but because of that, their occasional kindness left a stronger impression. Like treating my injuries, or buying a cake for my birthday. I still resent them for running away, but the memories haven't disappeared. Hinako, the heiress of the Konohana family, now lives a life distant from her family. Her mother passed away, and her father, Kagen-san, usually works at the main building and rarely sees her. Although there are many servants in this mansion, they are all people hired by Kagen-san. Hinako, who dislikes a stiff atmosphere, probably finds it hard to fit in.
"Itsuki-kun."
A voice called me from behind. I turned to see Shizune-san standing there.
"How is Ojou-sama's condition?"
"...She just fell asleep."
Shizune-san looked at the sleeping Hinako and nodded lightly.
"Itsuki-kun, I have something important to tell you. Can we talk outside?"
"No problem."
Shizune-san's expression was grave, so I agreed. But just as I was about to stand up, Hinako squeezed my hand tightly. I looked at Shizune-san silently.
"...It can't be helped. Let's talk here."
"...My apologies."
Shizune-san whispered, and I nodded with a complex expression.
"I want to talk about the Konohana family... Do you remember what Master Kagen said before about why Ojou-sama needs to act?"
"I remember it was because the Konohana Group's situation isn't good, and she needs to find the best possible partner."
"Correct. But that is only a secondary objective."
"Secondary...?"
As I looked baffled, Shizune-san began to explain:
"The main purpose of Ojou-sama's acting is to find a mukoyōshi (an adopted son-in-law) for the Konohana family."
Not to marry out, but to bring a husband into the Konohana family.
"The Konohana family has an orthodox heir, Master Kagen's eldest son, Takuma Konohana-wakasama... Ojou-sama's older brother."
"An older brother... is he?"
"Yes. However, there is a large age gap between them, and they have almost never met. When Ojou-sama was five, Takuma-wakasama moved to a separate annex."
It seems that, like her father, this older brother also keeps his distance from Hinako.
"There have long been doubts about whether Takuma-wakasama is... suitable to inherit the Konohana Group. If Takuma-wakasama does not inherit, the successor to the Konohana family will be Ojou-sama's husband."
I see. The reason for the mukoyōshi is that they want a successor.
"In the Konohana family, not just the master, but the mistress must also be involved in the work. In other words, if her son-in-law becomes the successor, Ojou-sama will also need to be deeply involved in the Konohana family's business in the future. Ojou-sama's usual acting is in anticipation of such a future. Because she will one day lead the Konohana Group with her husband, Ojou-sama must appear perfect and be respected. If any bad rumors about Ojou-sama were to spread, it would likely cause damage to the Konohana Group. If that damage expands to affect the future of the group... there will inevitably be many sacrifices."
Shizune-san said, looking at the sleeping Hinako. —Hinako Konohana is not an ordinary girl. Total assets of approximately 300 trillion yen. The heiress of this country's most famous conglomerate—the Konohana Group.
"Do you understand what kind of burden Ojou-sama is carrying?"
"...Yes."
The other day, I thought I needed to help Hinako because she was suffering. That thought wasn't wrong, but I should have understood Hinako's situation first.
"Is there... nothing I can do to help?"
"If you want to help Ojou-sama, I have no right to stop you."
I couldn't hide my surprise at that answer.
"But yesterday, you told me to 'watch my station'..."
"Correct. Therefore—based on your 'station,' you must help Ojou-sama within your capabilities. That is the attendant's duty."
Shizune-san looked straight at me, then turned and left the room. I watched the door close quietly, then turned my gaze back to Hinako.
"Help Hinako... within the capabilities of my station..."
I mulled over Shizune-san's words. For Hinako to stop acting, several conditions must be met. First, Hinako's brother, Takuma, must inherit the Konohana family. In that case, Hinako would marry out and wouldn't have to be involved in the Konohana Group's business. Second, if her husband inherits the group, Hinako must be in a position where she doesn't need to be involved in the business.
In that case, even if Hinako shows her true nature, the impact on the group would be minimal. However, I'm powerless in both of these matters. As a mere employee, it's impossible for me to overturn the Konohana Group's policies or traditions.
Even so— "The attendant's duty..." There is still something I can do. That is, to support Hinako as her attendant. 'An attendant's job is to protect Hinako's image as the perfect ojou-sama. In other words, to secretly support Hinako so her true form isn't exposed.'
I remembered Kagen-san's words. He said the attendant's job was to protect Hinako's image, but—I don't agree. The attendant's real job is... to let Hinako relax. To soothe Hinako's mind and body, exhausted from acting, as much as possible. To become the one person she can be herself around. If it's that—I can do it.
"...That's what I'll do."
Hinako's fever-racked appearance overlapped with my own memories of being sick as a child and being cared for by my parents. Sleeping while holding my hand, she looked incredibly lovable. I want to protect her. I want to care for her. I have to be gentle with her. After all, Hinako's small body is carrying an unbelievably heavy burden. Someone has to be gentle with her. When she's tired and collapses, someone needs to comfort her. To do that... I will try to give her family-like warmth.
"Hinako... I'll do my best."
I swore, gripping that small hand.
