Rich Girl Caretaker Vol. 1 Chapter 4
Attendant
Hinako's recovery took longer than expected. Shizune-san had estimated she would recover by Saturday, but Hinako's fever didn't break until Sunday morning. She rested at home that day, and if the fever didn't return, she would go to school the next morning.
Monday morning. Hinako's temperature was back to normal, and she lazily sat in the car heading to the academy.
"Still sleepy?"
"Mhm... I fell asleep at a weird time."
I looked at the drowsy Hinako beside me, remembering the resolution I'd made on Friday. As her attendant, I would lighten her burden as much as I could. That feeling hadn't changed.
"...I want a lap pillow."
"Alright, alright."
Hinako, looking sleepy, rested her head on my lap. I gently stroked Hinako's head, and Hinako seemed a little surprised.
"Itsuki... you seem a little different."
"Why do you say that?"
"...You're being gentler than usual."
That's good. I neither confirmed nor denied it, just continued stroking Hinako's head.
"So warm..."
Hinako seemed even more comfortable than usual as we headed to the academy. I glanced at the passenger seat; Shizune-san was just silently watching over us.
After arriving at the classroom, I sat down at my desk. The students at Kiou Academy were full of energy even on a Monday morning. They must maintain disciplined lifestyles, a big difference from the students at my old school.
"Yo, Tomonari!"
"Morning, Taisho-kun."
As I hung my bag on the side of my desk, Katsuya Taisho came over to chat. After the tea party, I felt I'd gotten closer to Taisho. I'd told Shizune-san I was worried I wouldn't fit in, but this made me realize again how important it is to deepen relationships with my classmates.
"Konohana-san, good morning! Why were you absent on Friday?"
"Good morning, Asahi-san. I was helping with my family's business on Friday."
"I see. That must be tough."
While idly chatting with Taisho, I listened to Asahi-san and Hinako's conversation. It sounded like they didn't connect Hinako's absence with her health at all. To maintain her image, this was probably the right way to handle it, but I still felt conflicted.
—Lunch Break. As usual, we snuck out of the classroom, and I ate bento alone with Hinako.
"Hinako, open your mouth a little wider."
"Mmm..."
Hinako's mouth opened a tiny bit wider, and I fed her a side dish from the bento. I fed Hinako her bento, just as before. ...But this sense of distance doesn't feel very family-like. No, wait, maybe my parents and I fed each other when I was little. Anyway, if this helps her relax, I'll do my best to go along with it.
"...Ngh."
Hinako looked at the bento and made a displeased sound.
"Itsuki... this is for you."
She brought her chopsticks to my mouth. On them was a bright green bell pepper.
"...Nope. No picky eating."
"Ehh..."
If just obeying Hinako's orders was enough to make her relax, the other attendants before me should have been able to serve her just fine. Yet, none of them managed it. What Hinako needs is the sense of security that comes from family. I have to treat her in a way that makes her feel she can safely entrust herself to me. To achieve that—I need to care more about her than she cares about herself.
"You can't have a healthy body without balanced nutrition."
"...If my body breaks down, I just have to sleep in the mansion, and that's easier anyway..."
"Don't say things like that."
I decided to work hard precisely so she wouldn't have those kinds of thoughts.
"I like seeing you healthy."
After I said that, Hinako lowered her eyes and pulled back her chopsticks.
"...I'll eat it."
Hinako nervously put the bell pepper in her mouth. The sight of her furrowing her brow and chewing with difficulty made me chuckle.
After school. Hinako and I returned to the mansion, and then, as usual, I received my training from Shizune-san.
"Thank you for the meal."
After finishing the dinner served at the desk in my room, I wiped my mouth and stood up. Today was practical etiquette training. I used every bit of knowledge I'd learned to finish every dish, and Shizune-san, beside me, calmly graded me.
"Your movements are still not fluid, but... you at least have the basic knowledge."
"Thank you."
"However, you got careless at the end. You must leave your seat from the left. I've taught you that, haven't I?"
"Ah... Sorry, I forgot."
I remembered the rule when sitting down, but I relaxed after finishing the meal and stood up from the right. I still have a lot to learn. I have to work harder so I can stay by Hinako's side.
"...Speaking of which, how does Hinako eat dinner?"
The thought suddenly occurred to me, so I asked Shizune-san.
"I'm always eating in my room while learning etiquette, but where... and with whom does Hinako eat?"
"Ojou-sama eats in the mansion's dining hall."
Shizune-san's reply was concise.
"...By herself?"
"Yes. Servants attend to her, but Ojou-sama eats alone."
I had vaguely sensed it, but hearing those words, my heart still felt heavy.
"Um... from now on, can I eat dinner with Hinako?"
"No."
She rejected my request flatly.
"You still have etiquette to learn. We can discuss it after you've mastered it all."
"...Yes, ma'am."
If mastering etiquette means I can eat with Hinako, I have to work even harder.
"One more thing, Itsuki-san. Tomorrow morning, you will be in charge of waking Ojou-sama."
"In the morning... me?"
"As I informed you on the first day, your duties will gradually increase. The attendant's job is to eventually support Ojou-sama's daily life from morning until night."
"...I understand."
After hearing Shizune-san's explanation, I nodded.
The next morning. The day at the Konohana household starts early. I woke at 6 AM, changed into my academy uniform, and left my room.
First was cleaning the area outside my room. The door front, hallway, and nearby stairs all had to be wiped clean. Finally, the used cleaning supplies were placed in the center of the first floor. Few guests ever enter the servants' living space, but a messy living space could soil a servant's uniform. Appearing before a guest in dirty clothes is extremely rude, so we were instructed to be thorough. Today was my turn to clean. On days I don't clean, I can sleep in a little.
7:00 AM. The servants gathered in the dining hall, eating breakfast while holding a meeting. About thirty people were gathered. The night-shift and weekend-shift servants don't attend this meeting.
"There are no changes to today's schedule. Proceed according to the roster."
After Shizune-san's announcement, the other servants replied, "Understood." I learned after starting work that Shizune-san is the Head Maid, the highest-ranking maid in the Konohana household. The servants' work centers around two supervisors: the Head Maid and the Head Butler.
7:30 AM. The servants finished their meal and left for their respective posts. I also headed to Hinako's room.
"Itsuki-san, good morning."
On the way to Hinako's room, one of the maids spoke to me.
"Good morning."
"The attendant's job is tough. Please keep up the good work."
"I will."
After encouraging me, the woman turned and left at a calm pace.
"...Everyone is gradually starting to accept me."
I've been working as an attendant for a week now, and the servants in this house all recognize me. Arriving at Hinako's room, I stopped at the door.
"...I should just wake her up normally, right?"
Thinking about it calmly, I've never woken up a girl before. But Shizune-san wouldn't give me a random order. I trust she gave me this job because she judged I could handle it.
"Pardon the intrusion."
I knocked, then entered Hinako's room. It seems servants can normally enter the master's room without knocking, but the Konohana household requires new servants to knock. Due to the development of computers and electronics, privacy has become more important, and past rules need to be adapted. When I entered, Hinako was sleeping soundly in her canopy bed.
"Hinako, time to wake up."
"Nghh... three more hours."
The unit of time is way too different. I could consider three minutes, but three hours is impossible.
"You'll be late if you don't get up."
"...I'll be late."
"No, you can't."
If you're late, all your hard work acting would be for nothing. If I let Hinako's image be ruined, I'd probably be fired, and I wouldn't be able to stay by her side.
"Come on, get up."
I pulled open the blackout curtains, and dazzling sunlight streamed into the room.
"Ngh..."
Hinako rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand and sat up.
"Huh... Itsuki...?"
"Yes. Good morning."
After I greeted her, Hinako stared blankly for a moment... then flopped back onto the bed. Why did she go back to sleep?
"...Pull me."
Hinako said, holding out both hands. Does she mean pull her up...? Seeing Hinako act spoiled made me give a wry smile.
"Alright, alright."
I took her hands and pulled her into a sitting position. As I naturally pulled her upper body into a light embrace, she gave a soft smile.
"Itsuki... morning."
"Good morning."
After greeting her again, I picked up the girl's uniform hanging on the rack.
"I'll put your clothes here. I'll be waiting outside the door."
"...Help me."
"...What?"
"Help me... get dressed."
Hinako spread her arms, as if asking me to take her clothes off.
"Helping you change..."
"Hur~ry~..."
My job is to wake Hinako and take her to the dining hall. Does... helping her change fall under that? I slowly undid the buttons on her pajamas. Underneath, I could see Hinako's skin.
"..."
A stimulating sight appeared before me, and I started to panic internally. Hinako closed her eyes without any defenses, entrusting herself to me.
"Calm down... I have to stay calm."
I reminded myself of this while changing her clothes. Once all the pajama buttons were undone, her pink underwear was visible. I squinted as much as possible and helped her into her uniform. ...Hinako doesn't see me that way. What she wants from me is the warmth of a trustworthy family member. To meet that expectation, I have to push aside any extra distracting thoughts. Just as I was thinking that—
"Itsuki-san, are you in there?"
"Y-Yes!?"
Shizune-san's voice came from outside the room, and I was so startled I made a strange noise.
"I forgot to remind you. Ojou-sama is often sleepy and confused in the morning and makes various requests, like asking for help changing... You are male. You wouldn't take that seriously, would you?"
I totally took it seriously!! What do I do!! Should I apologize? Call someone for help...? No, too late. If Shizune-san sees this, my life as a man is over.
"O-O-Of course not! I-I have some common sense!"
"That's true. My apologies for the rude question. You're not some monkey in heat... After these past few days, I've come to understand you are a person of integrity. Both Ojou-sama and I trust you."
Ouch ouch ouch... that trust really stings my heart. Why did Shizune-san have to pick this moment to praise me?
"Um... Hinako."
"What is it~...?"
"Er... about me helping you change today... can you keep it a secret from Shizune-san...?"
I asked, drenched in a cold sweat. She thought for a moment, then replied:
"...If you help me change every day, I won't tell."
"Ehh?"
"I'll be in your care every morning from now on..."
Give me a break, I screamed in my head.
◆
"Midterms?"
In the Kiou Academy classroom, which was finally starting to feel familiar. I was sitting at my desk, repeating Taisho's words.
"Yeah. You just transferred, so I thought I should remind you. Midterms start next week."
"Next week... So soon."
"Well, our school's opening ceremony was earlier than other schools."
Taisho's explanation made sense. Shizune-san hadn't mentioned it at all... but I've been prepping and reviewing every day anyway, so even if exams are coming, what I need to do doesn't change.
"Also, here are the past exam papers. They put them out in front of the faculty office before exams, so you can go grab a set if you want."
Taisho said, handing me a stack of papers. I quickly scanned them... and broke out in a cold sweat. —This is bad. I could barely answer any of these questions. Even with Shizune-san's tutoring, could I solve these by next week's exam? I hadn't neglected my studies until now, but I still felt a strong sense of crisis.
Lunch break. As usual, I was eating bento alone with Hinako.
"Itsuki... I want this."
Hinako said, looking at the bento box. But I was lost in thought and didn't answer.
"...Itsuki?"
"Hm... Ah, sorry. You want the hamburger patty, right?"
I picked up a piece of the Wagyu beef hamburger patty and brought it to Hinako's mouth.
"Nff... ahh-hff-hff?"
"...Swallow before you talk."
I couldn't understand what she was saying. Hinako swallowed the food in her mouth and spoke again:
"Itsuki... what's wrong?"
She seemed to sense something was off. I sighed and answered her question.
"It's nothing, just that the midterms seem harder than I thought. I'm a little depressed."
This was actually a serious problem. If my grades are too bad, I might lose my job as an attendant. Social studies, economics, and English are subjects I can improve with memorization. With enough time, I might be okay. But... the other subjects are hopeless.
"...Want me to teach you...?"
"What?"
"I may not look it, but my grades are number one in our year... Hmph, hmph."
Hinako puffed out her chest, speaking proudly.
"...Come to think of it, you're always teaching everyone in the classroom."
"Mhm. My skills are tried and true... Hmph, hmph."
Hinako looked smug. I know what she's like in private when she's not acting, so it doesn't feel real, but she really is Kiou Academy's number one genius. I'm trying so hard to earn her trust, but now I have to rely on her... It felt complicated, but I had no choice.
"Could I ask you to?"
"Leave it to me!"
Full of gratitude, I fed the delighted Hinako the dishes from her bento.
After finishing lunch, I returned to the classroom and sat at my desk. Just as I was feeling relieved that I had a plan for the exams, Taisho and Asahi-san walked over.
"Tomonari-kun, I heard. Are you worried about midterms?"
Asahi-san said. She must have heard from Taisho.
"Yeah... I wanted to ask, do you guys do anything special to prepare for exams? I'd like to use it as a reference."
"Hmm, nothing special. At most, we just study longer than usual. That's about it."
"Same as Asahi. Like, I focus on reviewing instead of prepping."
Kiou Academy students are used to studying after school, so they don't need to do anything special to handle exams.
"Tomonari-kun, how did you study at your old school?"
"Let's see... Sometimes I'd pull an all-nighter, and we'd have study groups."
"Study groups?"
I explained to the confused Asahi-san.
"It's basically just everyone getting together to study. When you study together, you feel more serious about it. Sometimes we'd help each other out, teaching subjects we're good at."
Although, "helping each other" usually meant chatting most of the time, so we never got any studying done.
"Then let's do it!"
"Huh?"
As I stood puzzled, Asahi-san happily chimed in.
"A study group! Let's do it! That sounds fun!"
For some reason, Taisho and Asahi-san's eyes were sparkling.
"The members will be the same as the tea party. There are a lot of people with good grades in that group."
"That's a great idea! I'll go invite them right now!"
I was just making idle chat, but before I knew it, the two of them had gotten extremely proactive. But... what do I do? I was planning to have Hinako teach me...
"Tomonari-kun, when are you free?"
"Well... I haven't decided if I'm joining yet."
"What! You're not joining, Tomonari-kun!? This was your idea!"
"Yeah! You suggested it, you host it!"
This atmosphere made it hard to refuse. But... I could join the study group and have Hinako teach me.
"...Alright."
After school, when my daily training was over, I brought up the study group with Shizune-san.
"A study group?"
"Yes. To prepare for the exams, we were thinking of inviting the tea party members to study together..."
"You just had a tea party recently... Is studying together really meaningful?"
Shizune-san's sharp gaze fixed on me.
"This time, it's purely to prepare for the academy's exams. And it's meaningful to get guidance from students who have actually taken the exams."
But if that was the only goal, having Hinako teach me would be enough. I had my own reasons for wanting the tea party members to study together.
"Besides, this is just my personal opinion... but the people I met at the tea party are all reliable. Asahi-san and Taisho, Tennouji-san and Narika. I believe these are valuable connections to cultivate."
Because of that, I wanted permission to spend time with them. After I implicitly expressed this, Shizune-san gave a small nod.
"I understand. I had planned to start exam-prep lessons with you tomorrow, but if that's the case, I will adjust the schedule."
Shizune-san said calmly, and I couldn't hide my surprise.
"I'm sorry, you already had a plan?"
"Don't worry about it. I am an outsider, after all. And as you just said, the students who are directly involved can probably come up with more suitable measures."
But, since she went to the trouble of preparing it, it would be a waste not to use it. I'll join the study group, but I'll also follow the study plan she prepared for me.
"That's all for today's training. Ojou-sama is waiting. Please hurry to her room."
After thanking Shizune-san, I left the dojo. An attendant's after-school schedule is packed. After prepping and reviewing schoolwork, I learn table manners at dinner, study a bit more, and finally, practice self-defense. After self-defense practice, I go to Hinako's room to help her bathe. The schedule that was so brutal at first was gradually becoming routine.
"...Right, before I go."
I remembered something and went back to my room first. After grabbing the thing I forgot, I headed to Hinako's room again.
"Ngh..."
I met up with Hinako, who had already entered the bathroom, and began washing her hair. While I washed, Hinako kept letting out displeased groans.
"...Are you still upset?"
"I said I'd teach you... hmph..."
"I'm sorry. I decided on my own. But even with the study group, I'll still study with you..."
"...Are you not satisfied with just me?"
"No, that's not it..."
Her mood wasn't improving. After rinsing the shampoo from her hair, I stood up.
"...Wait a second."
I said, returning to the changing room and grabbing the item I'd prepared.
"Don't tell Shizune-san."
I handed Hinako the item I'd taken from an insulated bag.
"This is...?"
"It's an ice pop. I bought it secretly before getting in the car to go home."
My cover and Hinako's is that we live in different places, so when we go home, Hinako gets in the car first, and I meet up with the car in a deserted location. Today after school, I secretly bought an insulated bag and an ice pop before reaching the rendezvous point and hid it in my school bag. Shizune-san gives me a basic living allowance for my time at school, and I used that money.
"Hinako, have you ever eaten an ice pop while taking a bath?"
"No..."
"It's super delicious."
I had one for myself, too, and started eating it first. Hinako followed my lead, taking a bite of her ice pop while soaking in the tub.
"Delicious...! Delicious...! Sooo delicious...!!"
"Right?"
Hinako was so moved her eyes were sparkling. Seeing her blissful expression, I couldn't help but smile. ...Did her mood finally improve? I had originally prepared the ice pop to help Hinako relax. My goal as her attendant is to create a life for Hinako where she doesn't collapse. Since she used to collapse periodically, that means the old methods didn't work. So, I plan to try various things my own way. The accumulation of these small things is important. The item I prepared based on this idea worked.
"Ah..."
A piece of the ice pop fell. The bathroom floor was warm, and it melted into liquid instantly... Hinako quickly scooped up the puddle with her palm.
"Three-Second Rule."
I frowned at the proud Hinako.
"No, it's liquid... Don't eat it."
"...Three-Second Rule."
The rule doesn't apply in this situation. Hinako dejectedly let the liquid drip back to the floor.
"I'll warn you now, it's best not to do that in front of everyone."
"Mhm... I'll be careful."
Her reply was vague. I don't know if she really understood.
"Itsuki... when is the study group?"
"The date's not set, but the sooner the better. Maybe tomorrow or the day after..."
"...I'm going too."
From the way the conversation was going, I expected her to say that. But unlike the tea party, I now felt uneasy.
"I didn't get a chance to ask... did you collapse last time because of the tea party?"
I felt a pang of guilt and continued.
"If so, this study group will definitely be a burden on you, too. I think it would be easier for you to just go home."
"Mmm..."
Hinako thought about my words, then replied:
"Easier... isn't always better."
She said. It was a short answer, but I understood what she meant.
"...I see."
Being alone might be easier, but in Hinako's heart, that doesn't necessarily equal happiness. Honestly, I want Hinako to interact with all sorts of people. Thinking of Narika and Tennouji-san's examples, I think it's best for Hinako to make friends.
"Besides... I can't be without you right now."
Hinako stated. I couldn't help but smile wryly.
"Then let's go together."
"Mhm."
After school, I confirmed the students gathered at the round table and said:
"The study group will now begin."
"Yay!!"
The first one to cheer was Asahi-san. That's not the right attitude for a study group, but pointing it out would be a buzzkill, so I kept quiet. We were once again at the café where we'd held the tea party. The members around the table were the same as last time: me, Asahi-san, Taisho, Hinako, Narika, and Tennouji-san. Six of us.
"But... this really is a deluxe lineup. A study group with the top two students in the year... it's so reassuring."
I was puzzled by Taisho's words.
"First place is Konohana-san, and second place is...?"
"...I am second place."
Mirei Tennouji, sitting on my right, said unhappily. Tennouji-san holds a rivalry with Hinako.
"Sorry,"
I apologized to her in a small voice.
"Asahi's grades are good too, right?"
"They're decent~ Among us, I remember Miyakojima-san's grades are also really good, right?"
"Eek!?"
Asked by Asahi-san, Narika's face stiffened.
"I-I only have good grades in PE and History..."
"History?"
"The Miyakojima family is a family that values the way of the samurai, so I've had to study history since I was little."
Narika said, finding it hard to speak.
"As for the other subjects... I fail almost all of them."
The table went silent. Narika hung her head, embarrassed. Unlike Hinako, who excels in both academics and sports, Narika is specialized heavily in 'martial'.
"Ugh, I feel... sorry."
"...It's fine. Don't worry about it."
Narika said sadly. People were afraid of her due to various misunderstandings, so they overlooked her many flaws. Asahi-san and Taisho, who had looked at Narika with respect at the tea party, now looked at her with kindness.
"Well... it seems we need to get serious."
Tennouji-san said this with a serious expression and looked at me.
"Tomonari-kun, do you have any ideas on how to run this study group?"
"Not really... I was just thinking we'd all study together."
"Then how about we split into a teaching group and a learning group? That should be more efficient... I, Konohana-san, and Asahi-san will be the teaching group."
In other words, me, Taisho, and Narika would be the learning group.
"Tomonari-kun, which subject are you weakest in?"
"Anything that isn't memorization... especially math."
I honestly stated my weak subject, and Hinako, sitting to my left, immediately reacted.
"I can—"
"—Then I shall teach Tomonari-kun. Mathematics is my strong suit."
Hinako was cut off mid-sentence by Tennouji-san's clear voice. In that instant, the smile on Hinako's face froze.
"Then I'll teach Miyakojima-san. I don't have a 'best' subject, but I don't have a 'worst' one either. I should be able to help raise your average score."
"Th-Thank you!"
Narika's reply was stiff.
"S-So, that leaves me with Konohana-san...?"
"...Yes. I look forward to working with you, Taisho-kun."
"Y-Yes, ma'am!!"
Taisho was nervous, but it was obvious he was overjoyed. On the other hand, Hinako was smiling gently—while forcefully stepping on my foot. Ouch ouch ouch... Come to think of it, Hinako had wanted to study with me since yesterday. She must be unhappy that Tennouji-san is studying with me instead of her. We can still study together when we get home... Ouch ouch, don't grind your heel into my foot!
"Then let's begin."
At Tennouji-san's words, everyone started studying.
Two hours passed since the one-on-one tutoring began. At my old high school, a study group would have devolved into chatting after thirty minutes, but the Kiou Academy students just studied quietly and diligently. This must be what they call a different upbringing. With my strong sense of crisis about the exams, this was an environment I couldn't be more grateful for.
"Are you okay, Miyakojima-san? Want to take a break?"
"Oh, oh... yes. To be honest, my head is about to explode..."
Narika clutched her head and spoke despairingly.
"Taisho-kun, let's take a short break."
"Y-Yes, ma'am!!"
Taisho was still nervous, his voice cracking as he replied to Hinako's suggestion.
"Let's us take a short break as well."
Tennouji-san, who was teaching me math, suggested. But my eyes remained fixed on the notebook in front of me as I replied.
"...No, I want to study a little more."
Thanks to Tennouji-san's teaching, things I couldn't understand before were easily solved. It's fun... I wouldn't go so far as to say I like studying, but I could feel myself growing, and a sense of accomplishment welled up. I wanted to study just a little longer.
"...Tomonari-kun, you're so diligent."
Asahi-san said, looking at me.
"No, I'm not teasing. You look really serious."
"Yes. That desire to improve is very appealing."
Tennouji-san also agreed.
"It was Tomonari-kun who planned this study group, wasn't it? Tomonari-kun lacks awareness as a leader, but... he's very good at supporting and motivating others."
I had no intention of being a leader, and was about to ignore that part... but the second half of the compliment caught me off guard.
"What's with that look?"
"Hearing such a specific compliment, I don't know whether to be happy or surprised..."
"My judgment of character is sharp. I picked out all my current servants myself."
Tennouji-san said proudly.
"The servants Tennouji-san hires are mostly big guys, aren't they."
"That's because their main job is to be bodyguards when I go out. The servants who attend to me at home are a different group."
The servants at the Konohana house are basically hired by Kagen-san, but at the Tennouji family, the daughter, Tennouji-san, seems to have the right to choose her attendants.
"So, Tomonari-kun, who Tennouji-san acknowledges, has a bright future."
"Indeed. It's a bit rude to judge a classmate with the same eye I use for servants... but he certainly has potential. If he himself were willing, I would consider hiring him."
"Being hired by the Tennouji family would come with good conditions~ Tomonari-kun, you should consider it."
Asahi-san said happily. However, at that moment, I felt a murderous gaze. Hinako and Narika were glaring fiercely at me.
"...W-Well, I don't mean it like that."
"Oh, what a shame."
Tennouji-san was, of course, joking. Her tone wasn't that regretful.
"...Let's take a break after all. There's a limit to concentration, and resting can clear your head."
"...You're right."
I still have to study when I get back to the mansion anyway. I need to pace myself so I don't burn out here.
"Tomonari, where are you going?"
"We finally have a break... I'm going for a little walk to loosen up."
I told Taisho and walked out of the café. I planned to stretch to change my mood, but I didn't want to do it somewhere conspicuous, so I walked to the quieter, deserted back of the school building. Even in places people don't usually see, Kiou Academy is kept clean. I enjoyed the outdoor breeze and leisurely stretched my muscles.
"...I'm actually pretty lucky."
I thought about the members of the study group. Hinako, Narika, Taisho, Asahi-san, and Tennouji-san... I had friends at my old high school, but my current relationships aren't bad either. Everyone is kind and reliable. At first, I thought this attendant job was difficult and a heavy responsibility, but before I knew it, I'd become comfortable with my current situation. While I sincerely want to help Hinako, I also just want to protect this environment. —Let's study hard. Just as I made that resolution, I heard footsteps behind me.
"Tomonari-kun."
Someone called my name. I turned around; it was Tennouji-san.
"Eh? Tennouji-san, are you on a walk, too?"
"Yes, I also wanted to loosen up."
I see—I didn't even get to respond.
"—However, that is just a pretext."
Tennouji-san said.
"I have something to ask you."
"Ask me...?"
I was clueless. As I stood puzzled, Tennouji-san began to speak:
"Tomonari-kun, are you really the successor to a mid-level company?"

That question made my heart stop. My relaxed mood vanished instantly, and I broke out in a cold sweat. —Am I exposed? Why? How? Where did the information leak from? —Calm down. I suppressed my panic and put on as calm a face as possible.
"...Why do you ask?"
I didn't understand her intention. Is Tennouji-san certain my identity is fake? ...If so, it's too late for me to salvage this.
"Table manners."
She said concisely.
"...Was my etiquette that bad?"
"No. While it was a bit stiff, it was generally acceptable. But to my eyes... it looked like it was crammed in at the last minute."
Tennouji-san said, her eyes observing me.
"There's an unnaturalness to your every move. Your etiquette... it looks like it was just crammed in, like you're just going through the motions. At the very least, those are not the movements of someone educated to be a successor since childhood."
I suddenly remembered Tennouji-san saying her judgment of character was sharp. Shizune-san had never pointed this out, and of course, I hadn't realized it myself.
"I am not accusing you."
As I fell silent, Tennouji-san spoke in a calm tone:
"I was just a little curious. Because you're a transfer student, you probably didn't need to learn etiquette in the past. Thinking of it that way, it makes sense. But... if that's the case, you're too good."
"...Too good?"
"I just mean your knowledge is abnormally vast. You've been working quite hard these past few days, haven't you?"
Though it was a question, her tone was very certain.
"As for why you're working so hard, I thought the answer might lie in your identity... If you don't want to say, I won't pursue it further."
I was grateful for her consideration in not digging deeper, but at the same time, I was confused.
"...You don't find it suspicious?"
I asked timidly. She smiled softly and replied:
"A suspicious student couldn't enter this academy. The academy should have investigated your family background when you transferred in."
Come to think of it, Narika also said there was a background check for enrollment. If that's the case, why did Tennouji-san bring this up?
"...I'm simply curious."
Tennouji-san said, as if seeing through my thoughts.
"Perhaps you, too............"
Her voice was very small, muttering something. I was puzzled, unable to hear her at all. Then, she returned to her usual self, looking straight at me.
"It's nothing... Let's go back."
"...Okay."
When I returned to the café with Tennouji-san, Asahi-san and the others were chatting happily.
"You all seem to be having fun."
Tennouji-san said, sitting down.
"Ah, Tennouji-san. We were just talking about the tea party hosted by Konohana-san's family."
"A tea party?... Oh, you mean the banquet the Konohana family hosts every spring?"
"Tennouji-san, you know about it!"
"It's quite famous. I believe it's the week after midterms... I hear many celebrities attend. It's a major event in high society."
It sounds like the Konohana family is hosting a banquet soon, and I knew nothing about it.
"Have you attended, Tennouji-san?"
"My father has attended several times, but I have not. It's a social gathering for adults, and... the Tennouji family and the Konohana family's relationship isn't exactly harmonious."
"Ah..."
Asahi-san sensed Tennouji-san's feelings.
"Our families' relationship isn't bad, but all that mutual probing doesn't suit my personality, so I've declined past invitations."
Before the atmosphere could turn sour, Tennouji-san explained forthrightly. As a commoner, I didn't really understand what "probing" meant, but everyone else did.
"Have you attended, Miyakojima-san?"
"N-No. I receive an invitation, but... I'm not good at those kinds of social gatherings..."
Narika replied to Tennouji-san's question, finding it hard to speak.
"The Tennouji family and Miyakojima family get invitations... I'm so jealous. Since it's a big banquet hosted by the Konohana family, there must be dancing, right? I love wearing dresses, so I always actively participate in these kinds of events."
Asahi-san said, sounding envious. Hearing this, Hinako smiled gently.
"Asahi-san, if you'd like to attend, I can send you an invitation."
"Eh, really!?"
"Yes. As Tennouji-san said, it's generally considered an adult gathering, but the hosts don't have such restrictions. You are welcome to come. There will be a ball, and there will be several other attendees our age."
"Wh-What should I do... Now that I'm invited, I'm a little nervous. But this might be a valuable opportunity... C-Could you send me an invitation?"
"Of course. It will arrive within three days."
"Okay... I'll dress my best for the day! Please take care of me, Konohana-san!"
"Yes."
Hinako readily agreed to invite her. I leaned into Hinako's ear and whispered.
"...Is it okay to just decide that?"
"Mhm... The purpose of this banquet is to show the Konohana family's authority. I've been told to invite people if I have the chance... though I've never invited anyone before."
She's never invited anyone before, huh. The students at Kiou Academy are all from rich families. Inviting them probably wouldn't be a loss for the Konohana family.
"K-Konohana-san! Can I go too?"
"Yes, I'll send you an invitation."
Taisho also looked excited.
"...This must be fate."
Tennouji-san muttered.
"Konohana-san, I will also attend this time... Since we've shared a table at a tea party and a study group, I intend to accept this invitation not as the daughter of the Tennouji family, but as a friend."
Tennouji-san said with a smile.
"Will Tomonari-kun be attending?"
"Um, I..."
Hearing Tennouji-san's question, I glanced at Hinako. Hinako was smiling gently. Given that I'm already attending school with her as her attendant, just attending a social event should be allowed...
"...It's a rare opportunity, so it might be nice to attend."
I vaguely hinted that I wasn't sure if I'd be there.
"...And Miyakojima-san?"
"M-Me!?"
Narika jumped, startled at being asked.
"I, um... if I can go, I'll go."
Everyone, except for Narika, looked perplexed at this common platitude. Then again, forcing her would just be a bother, so it's best to drop the subject. After that, the study group continued—a few days later, the Kiou Academy midterms began.
The Kiou Academy midterm schedule was different from my old high school's. Each exam was ninety minutes long; because there were many questions, the time was extended. There were also subjects my old high school didn't have, like economics. The midterms lasted for three days. The last day, the last exam finished... I could finally relax.
"...It's finally over."
As the bell signaling the end of the exam rang, I let out a sigh of relief. There were no classes today. All the students, exhausted, left for home. I looked at Hinako. Classmates were gathered around her, laughing and discussing the exam. It seemed like it would take her a while, so I headed to the restroom alone. After using the restroom, I was about to head back to class when I ran into a familiar figure.
"Narika?"
"...Oh, it's Itsuki."
Narika was walking down the hall, looking completely lost. She turned her head toward me. Her eyes were dull.
"Haha, it's over... the exams, and me."
"...It didn't go well?"
I had a feeling during the study group, but Narika is really bad at studying. Aside from PE and History, her performance was worse than average.
"What about you?"
"...At least I won't fail."
"Heh, I figured. I expected as much... After all, you're a traitor."
"What traitor..."
"You left me to work at the Konohana house, and your grades have already surpassed mine... You really are my benefactor, showing me just how useless I am... Or do you actually hate me?"
"No, I don't..."
"..................This is painful."
She let out a listless remark. I didn't want to get dragged any further into her overflowing negative energy, so I quickly turned to leave.
"I'm heading out... See you tomorrow."
"Tomorrow... I want to skip..."
Don't say things Hinako would say. I said goodbye to Narika, who was staring out the window, and returned to the classroom. Hinako had just finished talking with her classmates and was preparing to go home. As usual, she got in the car first, and I got in later at the rendezvous point.
"Good work on the exams."
After I got in, Shizune-san said.
"How do you feel you did?"
"Thanks to your instruction, I was able to answer quite a few questions."
"That answer doesn't tell me if it was good or bad, but... judging from the mock exam results, your score shouldn't be too bad. Your hard work paid off."
"...Thank you."
With Shizune-san's praise, I finally felt like the exams were really over.
—I finally managed to get through it.
I had passed a major hurdle, but I couldn't let my guard down. I have to keep studying hard. The car headed toward the Konohana mansion. I was exhausted today, so there wasn't much conversation.
"By the way, Ojou-sama, on Saturday, the day after tomorrow, you are to attend a dinner party with Master Kagen."
Shizune-san's voice came from the passenger seat.
"The other party is the president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding Company, along with several executives from Japan Ocean Co., Ltd. Both are shipbuilding companies. Chikamoto Shipbuilding is a partner of a Konohana Group subsidiary. Japan Ocean Co. is a capital and business partner of Chikamoto Shipbuilding, and you are attending due to that connection."
Shizune-san scanned the document and continued her explanation.
"Ojou-sama, you greeted the president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding at a social gathering when you were seven. During the invitation, he expressed a desire to see how you have grown, which is why your attendance was decided. Please do not act in a discourteous manner."
"Mhm... What a pain."
"Please, I implore you."
Shizune-san was unfazed, as if she were long used to this exchange. Hinako, sitting to my right, pouted unhappily.
"Itsuki-san."
"Yes."
"Please come to the venue that day as well."
"Me?"
I was puzzled, not expecting her to say that.
"You will have opportunities to attend social gatherings in the future. It will be beneficial for you to familiarize yourself with the atmosphere now. The dinner is outdoors. You will attend as a servant of the Konohana family and observe from a distance."
"...Understood."
Saturday. On this day, Hinako and Kagen-san attended the dinner party together. I accompanied them as a servant, changing into the clothes Shizune-san gave me.
"A suit."
I muttered as Shizune-san inspected my appearance.
"Do you not like it?"
"No, it's not that I don't like it... I'm just not used to wearing one."
Unlike my part-time job uniform, the suit felt more constricting. But the reflection in the mirror looked sharper than my usual school uniform. My specially styled hair was part of it, but as expected, a high-end suit makes one look exceptionally sharp.
"This suit is from a top-tier Italian brand. It costs 700,000 yen."
"What!?"
"Please be careful not to damage it in any way."
I had no idea it was such an expensive suit. With the mission "Do not get this suit dirty," I walked out of the mansion with Shizune-san.
"This is the venue."
After about an hour's drive, we arrived at our destination.
"Shizune-san, is this also a Konohana family annex?"
"Rather than a secondary annex, this is a holiday villa, mainly used for hosting banquets."
Before us stood a magnificent and chic Western-style mansion. The front hall was as luxurious as a first-class hotel, and next to the mansion was a spacious golf course.
"Ojou-sama, please proceed to the front hall. We will be on standby outside."
"...Mhm."
Hinako, dressed in exquisite clothes for the party, nodded lightly. From here, Hinako and I would part ways.
"...Itsuki."
"What is it?"
"I... have to go meet some old man I don't know."
"Don't make it sound like a crime."
From my position, that's a hard joke to react to. I thought Hinako was finished... but she was still standing next to me.
"...Itsuki."
"Is there something else?"
"...I'll do my best."
Hinako stared at me, her eyes full of expectation. You should have just said that from the start...
"Okay, I'll be cheering for you. When the party is over, we can laze around in the mansion together."
After I said that, Hinako gave a quiet smile.
"...Mhm. I want an ice pop, too."
Hinako finished speaking and walked over to Kagen-san. Her back was five meters away when...
"...Ice pop?" Shizune-san muttered.
"Itsuki-san, what is this about an ice pop?"
"..."
A cold gaze fell upon me. I looked away. Hinako, you...!!
◆
After parting with Itsuki and the others, Hinako walked alone into the villa's front hall. She quickly spotted her father, Kagen. Like Itsuki, he wore a black suit, but his wasn't just a top-tier brand; it was custom-made. Servants of the Konohana family were obligated to wear expensive uniforms so as not to detract from the family's dignity, but at the same time, to emphasize the master's status, their clothing was regulated to not exceed the master's in price. Itsuki's suit was a ready-to-wear piece worth about 700,000 yen. Kagen's was a far more expensive suit, costing over one million yen.
"It's been a while, Hinako."
"Mhm... long time no see."
Hinako, in her usual state, responded to her father's greeting.
"How were your exams?"
"...No problem."
"That's good. You are the heiress of the Konohana family. Continue to maintain grades that will not bring shame to your status."
Kagen said this without emotion, as if discussing work.
"How is Itsuki performing? It's been nearly a month since he became your attendant..."
"...Super amazing."
Hinako replied with some delight, and Kagen was surprised.
"It's rare for you to praise an attendant like this."
"...I want Itsuki to stay with me in the future, too."
"Is that so. Hiring a commoner unconnected to the Konohana family was an experiment... but it's good that you get along."
Kagen's face was devoid of a smile. His tone was as calm as a researcher confirming a successful experiment. Then, he turned his gaze to Hinako.
"You haven't been unnecessarily influenced, have you?"
"...Unnecessarily influenced?"
Hinako looked puzzled, not understanding what he meant.
"Although he suits your personality, Itsuki is a commoner. You don't need to be influenced by him and pick up vulgar habits."
Hinako looked puzzled, not understanding what he meant.
"It's almost time. Hinako, remember to be careful with your words and actions."
Kagen instructed her with a serious face. In the next instant, Hinako put on her mask.
"Yes, Father."
"...Good girl."
Hinako began to play the part of the perfect ojou-sama, Kiou Academy's number one talent. A few minutes later, a sedan pulled up in front of the villa, and the guests for the dinner party arrived.
"Thank you all for coming so far."
"Hahaha, we came because we wanted to, don't be so formal. I hear we can be informal today."
Compared to Kagen's cautious welcome, the visitors had a more relaxed atmosphere. There were five guests in total. Two were executives from Chikamoto Shipbuilding, and the other three were from Japan Ocean Co. All of them looked older than Kagen. In terms of family pedigree, the Konohana family was undoubtedly the most illustrious, but the guests' ease likely came from their advantage in age and experience.
"It's been a while. Do you remember me?"
The president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding spoke to Hinako.
"Yes. I greeted you at a social gathering when I was seven."
"That was so long ago. Thank you for remembering. You're as polite as ever."
The president said admiringly.
"Oh, is this your daughter, Kagen-san?"
"Yes. This is Hinako."
After Kagen's introduction, Hinako bowed respectfully.
"I've heard about you. My friend's child attends Kiou Academy, and that child says everyone at the academy calls you the 'perfect ojou-sama'."
"You are too kind."
Hinako nodded politely.
"Excellent grades, a bright future... With such a highly-regarded daughter, you must be proud, Kagen-san."
"Yes. Though she is my own daughter, I am grateful she has grown so splendidly."
Kagen said, then glanced at the guests.
"It must be tiring to stand and talk. Let's move to the venue. As per Mr. Chikamoto's wish, we've set up tables outdoors. What do you think?"
"Wonderful. It's rare to have such nice weather. And it's not like this is an important meeting. Let's all just enjoy the breeze and chat."
Shizune-san and I watched Hinako's group at the dinner party.
"Itsuki-san, what do you think of the party?"
"Well..."
In response to Shizune-san's question, my gaze remained fixed as I answered:
"Their etiquette is poised, every movement is natural... but you can also tell they are being extremely careful..."
"That is proper etiquette."
Shizune-san said.
"It's natural, so as not to make others feel constrained, yet it's strict, so everyone understands they are being treated with courtesy. At first glance, it may seem like a formal performance, but by coordinating through mutual adherence to common rules, a stronger relationship of trust can be built."
"A relationship of trust..."
"Etiquette is often looked down upon these days, but there are many situations where it is necessary. It is an essential norm, especially in the upper class. Etiquette is not about using words, but using attitude to gain trust. Because they are in positions where they cannot speak their true minds, it is all the more necessary."
What a hard world to understand. As a commoner, I couldn't grasp it.
"...Therefore, breaking such norms is an extremely rude act."
Shizune-san finished speaking and fell silent. I also closed my mouth and observed Hinako, Kagen-san, and the others.
The dinner party was proceeding smoothly so far.
"Oh, you still study when you get home?"
"Yes, although I don't spend all my time studying."
Hinako cut a small bite of vegetables with her knife, brought it to her mouth, and chatted with the executives. The executives, who at first looked at Hinako with the gentle gaze one reserves for a child, gradually began to look impressed. Hinako, with her refined features and perfect manners, was displaying conduct worthy of her title as the "perfect ojou-sama."
"What a remarkable daughter. I'd like to trade my own useless son for her."
The president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding laughed as he spoke to Kagen.
"You're too kind. Isn't your son a graduate of an excellent university?"
"Education and ability are not the same. That boy is immature and not yet ready to take over."
The president said regretfully. A Konohana servant cleared the plates and set down the next course.
"Hm? No meat?"
"As this is lunch, we prepared a lighter meal. For dinner, the menu would be more substantial..."
"I have other plans tonight, otherwise I would have loved to stay for dinner."
"Hahaha,"
the president and executives laughed.
"Hinako is still a young student. You must want a more substantial meal, right?"
"No, I have a small appetite. This is quite enough."
Hinako said, a fake smile on her face. Seeing her elegant demeanor, the Chikamoto Shipbuilding president stroked his chin and said:
"Truly elegant behavior, you live up to your name. It seems you won't have trouble finding a good match in the future."
"As a parent, nothing could make me happier. Unfortunately, she is not engaged yet."
When Kagen replied, the president looked somewhat surprised.
"Is that so? I would have thought it normal if your daughter were already engaged..."
"She was once, but it was canceled due to certain circumstances. She currently has no such partner."
"Oh."
The president's eyes narrowed.
"To be honest, I have a friend who is looking for a match."
For a moment, Kagen almost smiled, but he held it back.
"May I ask for the details?"
"Yes. That friend's family mainly deals with foreign trade. Their business scale is decent, but because their work involves frequent contact with high society, they hope for a marriage partner with refined etiquette. This is just my personal guess... but that friend would likely be very pleased with your daughter."
"...I see. So the match would be for that friend's son."
"Yes. I believe he is in his early twenties."
Kagen responded, contemplating the future of the Konohana family. A friend of a shipbuilding president, a family in foreign trade—it must be related to trading. Not a large scale, but their clients are high society, meaning they have a unique market.
"I will consider it carefully."
"Hahaha, not much hope, is there?"
"Not at all. I am viewing this matter with the utmost seriousness."
After indicating this was not just a platitude, Kagen brought his teacup to his lips. The plates were cleared, and today's final course was placed on the table.
"Dessert has arrived."
"Oh, a baked dessert. It's nice to attend an elegant party like this once in a while."
The president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding said "once in a while"... but Kagen, through prior research, already knew this man loved baked desserts. As expected, the president before him was happily enjoying the sweet.
"Kagen-san, regarding what we just discussed, may I relay that to my friend?"
"You may. It is not a boast, but my daughter is certainly accomplished in both talent and virtue."
Whether that friend's son was suitable for Hinako didn't matter much at the moment. What mattered was the connection. Even if this marriage proposal didn't work out, it might lead to the next one, just as this one had.
"Hinako, did you hear—"
Kagen called his daughter's name and turned his head. Hinako was using her fingertips to pick up dessert crumbs that had fallen on the table. The executives stared, mouths agape. Hinako, completely unaware of the instantly frozen atmosphere, quickly put the crumbs from the table into her mouth. —The Three-Second Rule. She was about to say the words, but then she remembered Itsuki wasn't here, and that she was at a dinner party.

"...Ah."
She let out a small gasp.
"Hmm."
The president of Chikamoto Shipbuilding stroked his beard.
"...It seems she's a little different from her reputation."
In that instant, I realized Hinako had messed up. —Ah. I probably gasped at the same time as Hinako. Hinako seemed to realize her mistake, but it was too late. The dinner party continued, seemingly without issue... but I noticed Kagen-san's expression turn grim for a split second.
"This is terrible."
Shizune-san muttered beside me.
"What will happen to Ojou-sama..."
"I don't know. But... given Master Kagen's personality, this will likely be the worst-case scenario."
Even Shizune-san, who always spoke calmly, couldn't hide her tension. I held my breath and waited for the party to end. About ten minutes later, the guests prepared to leave and walked out of the villa.
"Thank you all for coming today."
"I had a wonderful time. One needs to relax like this every so often."
As Kagen-san saw the president and executives off, they bid him farewell cheerfully. They didn't seem upset... but the Chikamoto Shipbuilding president spoke up, as if suddenly remembering something:
"By the way, Kagen-san, please forget I mentioned that marriage prospect. Since it was my introduction, my own face is on the line."
"...Yes."
"Hahaha, don't worry about it. It's rude of me to say, but it was about an absent third party anyway. I hope we can continue our close relationship, both professionally and personally."
"Yes, I look forward to it as well."
The guests got into their cars and left the villa. After seeing the last guest off, Kagen-san turned and looked this way.
"Shizune."
"Yes."
"Who taught Hinako such an indecent act?"
"That... " Shizune-san hesitated. I couldn't stand the atmosphere and decided to confess.
"...I'm sorry. It was me."
After I admitted it, Kagen-san sighed, as if he had vaguely suspected it all along.
"I am always thinking, is an attendant truly necessary?"
Kagen-san said.
"You all know that Hinako's true personality is vastly different from her act, and that acting places a heavy burden on her, so there's always a risk she'll slip up. An attendant's job is to support her from the side as much as possible so her slip-ups aren't discovered, but... such a method was, after all, an unnecessary extra."
Kagen-san looked at Hinako, then continued. His gaze was cold, not at all like a father looking at his own daughter.
"We should never have allowed her to slip up in the first place... Because she has her own personality, this is the result. An attendant just enables her self-indulgence."
Kagen-san muttered as if to himself, then looked at Shizune-san.
"Shizune, from now on, Hinako will play the role of the perfect ojou-sama in all matters, public and private."
"Public and private?"
"Yes. Not just at the academy, but in the mansion as well."
"...If she does that, Ojou-sama will likely collapse very quickly."
"Then fix that habit."
Kagen-san said, curt and severe.
"Because she collapses, we indulged her, and this is the result. Since it's not a chronic illness... I will not let it continue. Find a way to overcome this. If necessary, find time to have someone teach her... Since she was born into the Konohana family, this is her duty to protect the family's honor."
Hearing these words, the worst-case scenario flashed through my mind. —The problem isn't whether she collapses or not. If she has to act in public and in private, Hinako's true personality... will be completely sealed away.
"W-Wait!"
I unconsciously called out to Kagen-san. He turned to me, his expression extremely cold. I flinched for a second, but spoke with a trembling voice.
"Um... it's my fault. I ruined the party. I apologize. But isn't this punishment too—"
"It is not your fault."
"...What?"
"The previous attendants mostly quit after a short time, so I assumed you would be no different... I guessed your influence on Hinako wouldn't be significant. The fault is not yours, but mine for making that judgment, and Hinako's for being so easily influenced."
Kagen-san said, his face filled with deep regret.
"Shizune, when you return to the mansion, pay Itsuki his salary."
"...Yes."
I didn't understand what this brief exchange meant.
"Salary...?"
It's true that payday was approaching. But the reason to pay me today...
"Hinako will no longer require an attendant."
Kagen-san's sharp gaze pierced me as he said:
"Itsuki, your employment ends today."
Two hours later, I stared speechlessly at the closed gate.
"...No way."
As expected of the man who controls the world-famous Konohana Group, Kagen-san's methods were swift. After returning to the annex, Kagen-san immediately ordered me to pack my things. Because it was an abrupt dismissal, he gave me an extra sum on top of my salary. "If you have nowhere to go, you can use this money to live for a while," Kagen-san said, his cold expression radiating an authority that allowed no argument. After receiving an incredibly large severance pay, I was kicked out just like that. In just one day... in just a few hours, the life I'd known had completely crumbled. I'm sure I can't attend Kiou Academy anymore. Just like when I enrolled, the withdrawal procedures will be completed immediately. With the Konohana family's power, handling the aftermath is no problem.
"Haha."
A dry laugh escaped my lips.
"...Then again, it was like a dream, this whole life."
Despair dominated my mind. If only it were all a dream. Then—Hinako wouldn't have to suffer either.
"...Hinako."
If this continues, Hinako will be forced to live a life even more painful than before. However, I'm in no position to protest to Kagen-san right now. —When it comes down to it, this is my fault. Kagen-san said the responsibility wasn't mine, but it was. It's my fault for teaching her stupid, trivial things like the Three-Second Rule. I knew she had an unusual interest in these commoner habits, and I let it happen. The responsibility is mine. Thinking that... I can't do anything.
"Itsuki...?"
I had nowhere to go and was wandering the streets when someone called out to me. I slowly turned my head and saw a familiar girl.
"...Narika."
The girl with thigh-length black hair, tied back, stood before me.
"What's wrong? What are you doing here?"
"I'm on a walk. I told you before, right? I beat my dad and won my freedom, so now I can go out for a bit—"
Narika said proudly, but stopped mid-sentence when she saw my face. Her expression became anxious.
"...Itsuki, what's wrong? What happened?"
She asked, her face full of worry. I tried to feign calmness, but... the feelings coiled inside me couldn't be hidden.
"Actually—"
I explained, omitting the confidential details so as not to cause trouble for the Konohana family. I told Narika three things: I had caused Hinako to be embarrassed in public, I was kicked out of the Konohana house to take responsibility, and from now on, the control over Hinako would become even stricter.
"...I see."
Narika listened, her expression serious.
"Konohana-san... embarrassed in public... It's hard to believe, but from the look on your face, it must be true."
Perhaps because of my gloomy expression, Narika looked at me with even more concern.
"The Miyakojima family is prominent, though not on the same level as the Konohana family, so I generally understand the situation. Konohana-san must be going through a lot in places I don't see."
"...Yeah."
Even without telling her everything, Narika understood.
"How is Konohana-san?"
"I don't know the details, but from the way it looked, she's going to be under much stricter supervision. She might not be able to attend tea parties or study groups anymore."
"I see... The Konohana family is so strict. Just one failure, and they clamp down on their own daughter and kick you out."
Maybe Kagen-san doesn't even think of Hinako as his daughter. At least, in his words and actions so far, he hasn't shown any sign of cherishing her.
"It's all... my fault."
I blurted out my true feelings.
"If I hadn't taught her such an improper thing, this wouldn't have happened."
Now, I'm filled with regret. I had resolved to do everything I could to fill Hinako's loneliness, and this is the result. I've made Hinako suffer even more than before.
"In the end, I'm just a commoner who doesn't know etiquette... If I knew it would be this bad, I shouldn't have gotten involved with Hinako from the start—"
"—You're wrong!"
Narika shouted. I'd never seen her so angry; I was stunned.
"Itsuki, you're wrong. It's absolutely not your fault!"
"Narika...?"
"Think about me! About how I used to be!"
She said, staring straight into my eyes.
"My family used to forbid me from going out freely! But you changed my world! I still remember that day clearly! You showed me what a tiny world I was living in!"
Narika seemed deeply moved and continued:
"If it weren't for you, I'd probably still be afraid of the outside world, I'd never know how delicious snacks are, or how to buy things... I wouldn't know the bustle of the streets or the calm atmosphere of the park... That's why I'm grateful to you. More grateful than words can express."
Narika said, then lowered her gaze.
"Konohana-san must feel the same way."
She said sadly.
"It's a lonely thing, growing up in an environment where adults only teach you what's necessary. It wasn't just me; I'm sure you saved Konohana-san from that same loneliness."
At this, she looked at me again.
"Have confidence. That part of you... I... I... I..."
Narika suddenly blushed, averted her gaze, and continued:
"I think it's... it's amazing..."
For some reason, when Narika said that last part, her tone was very dejected. It was as if she'd compromised, saying something different from what she really wanted to say—but her words still reached my heart. —I see. Even if it was something I thought was trivial. Even if it was something I thought was uninteresting and not special at all. To Hinako and Narika, maybe it was very important—
"Narika... thank you."
I thanked her, and at the same time, I thought back on my days at the Konohana mansion. I'm not just being narcissistic. Even from an objective standpoint, I can declare this one thing for sure. —Hinako wasn't troubled by having me around. She has a certain amount of trust in me. In that case, I have to respond to that trust. I haven't responded to her feelings yet.
"...Okay."
I remembered the resolution I'd made that day. Hinako's small body is carrying an unbelievably heavy burden. Someone has to be gentle with her. If her parents and servants can't—then it's the attendant's responsibility.
"I'm going."
"...Where?"
"To the Konohana mansion."
I said to Narika, who had encouraged me.
"I'm going to—negotiate face-to-face."
My gloomy mood vanished. Carrying the confidence that Narika had revived in me, I walked toward the Konohana mansion.
Itsuki ran off without looking back. Narika smiled as she watched his retreating figure.
"...Hinako, huh."
He must have been too preoccupied to notice. He didn't even realize he'd let her first name slip.
"Aargh... I... I just helped my rival...!!"
A benefactor was in trouble, so of course she had to help. She didn't regret it, but this was a separate issue. Narika clutched her head in anguish. Those two... what is their relationship?
At the same time Itsuki was heading back to the Konohana mansion. Hinako was sitting on her bed when the door suddenly opened.
"Pardon me."
From behind the door, the maid, Shizune, entered the room.
"Ojou-sama, how are you feeling?"
"...Fine."
Hinako said languidly, then flopped onto the bed. It was a day off, no school. She only had to attend the dinner party, so she'd worn her "mask" for less time than usual. Even so, the stress accumulated from her daily life sometimes made her collapse. Especially today, when something sad had happened to Hinako. So Shizune had paused her work to come to Hinako's room. She came to check on her, just in case.
"Shizune... where is Itsuki?"
"...Itsuki-san has left."
After Shizune replied, Hinako lowered her gaze.
"Itsuki... was an attendant for a month."
"Yes."
"...That's a long time."
"It is."
Shizune agreed calmly, unable to read Hinako's thoughts. Hinako's tone sounded sad, but also indifferent. Maybe Hinako doesn't really care that Itsuki is gone, Shizune thought—
"...If he can't be an attendant, can't we hire him as a servant?"
Hinako asked. This was a suggestion she would never have made for any of her previous attendants.
"I heard they're short on gardeners..."
"...Ojou-sama."
"What about the kitchen...? Or cleaning... There are lots of jobs, right...?"
"Ojou-sama."
Shizune's tone was stronger.
"Master Kagen will not hire Itsuki-san again."
Hinako should have understood this. Hinako, without her mask, doesn't show much emotion. So Shizune finally realized: Hinako was so sad she was trying to escape reality.
"...No."
Hinako whispered.
"...I want to see Itsuki."
Listening to her small wish, Shizune bit her lip and slowly began to speak:
"Master Kagen will not allow it... Please give up this time. Continuing to defy the Master is not a wise move."
Hearing Shizune say this, Hinako pouted.
"Shizune... whose side are you on?"
"I am a person hired by Master Kagen."
Hinako became even more displeased.
"...Fine. In that case, I'll go find him myself."
"You must not."
Shizune ignored the sharp gaze directed at her and bowed.
"I must assist the Master with his work. I will take my leave now... For safety's sake, I will post someone outside your door. Please do not act rashly."
Shizune turned and left the room. The door shut with a click, and Hinako let out a breath.
"...Shizune just doesn't get it."
She gripped the blanket with both hands, as if making a firm resolution.
"I am a woman who keeps her word..."
Her eyes shining, she sprang into action.
After parting with Narika, I immediately headed for the Konohana family's mansion. Kagen-san was at the annex right now. He had planned to return to the main building after the dinner, but he'd made a special trip to the annex to investigate Hinako's living environment. He said he would be working in his office, so I guessed he'd be at the annex for a while. I don't know where the Konohana main building is, so I have to see him today. When I returned to the mansion, the two guards at the gate glared at me fiercely.
"What are you doing back here?"
Their tone was cold... but their eyes held a trace of pity. I had been an attendant for a month, and the servants of the Konohana house recognized me. I saw these two guards every day when Hinako and I left for and returned from school.
"I'm going in."
"...You can't. If you want to enter, you must follow the proper procedure."
That probably meant I had to get Kagen-san's permission first. But I wasn't going to back down just because of that. —Even if I follow procedure, Kagen-san will never agree to let me in. I ignored the two guards and walked toward the gate. The gate was sturdy, but there were some uneven places I could use as footholds. Maybe I could climb over.
"Stop."
As I took a step toward the gate, the two guards moved toward me.
"If you advance any further, we will treat you as an illegal intruder and take necessary action."
Their words showed they were worried about me. However, I had a reason I couldn't back down.
"Sorry—!"
I made my decision and rushed the gate.
"What!?"
Just as I was about to force my way up the gate, the two guards rushed over in surprise.
"Bastard!"
"Don't underestimate Konohana security!"
The guards closed in on me from the left and right. If they caught me here, I'd probably never see Hinako again. Anxiety flared, and my thoughts scattered—or so I thought. Despite the situation, I was surprisingly calm, which astonished even me.
"—Huh?"
It was me who made the sound of surprise. However, the opponent's reaction was even more panicked. Dodging the arm swinging from the right at the last second, I immediately ducked into the guard's space and used the rebound of my knee to throw his body. The guard's back hit the ground with a loud THUD!
"Urk!?"
I tore my gaze from the guard groaning at my feet and looked at the other one.
"Wh-What just happened!?"
The other guard hesitated, as if not expecting a counterattack. I had to seize this chance. —My body moved on its own. I quickly recalled the self-defense Shizune-san had taught me. The guard came to his senses and approached me, but he was too slow. I closed the distance first, grabbed his arm, and threw him outward. As he lost his balance, I hooked his leg and tripped him.
"Ngh!?"
The second guard fell, just like the first.
"Y-You brat... where did you learn..."
As the guard groaned, I looked at my own fists, recalling the past month. I remembered Shizune-san saying I had a talent for self-defense.
"Sorry... I'm in a hurry!"
I climbed the gate and entered the mansion grounds. The fallen guards shouted.
"Intruder! Get him!"
Having worked at the Konohana house for a month, I had a general idea of the mansion's layout. After climbing the main gate, I hid behind some bushes and stealthily circled to the back of the mansion. I recalled the servants' patrol routes to guess their positions and moved through the Konohana mansion grounds.
"Dammit, where did he go!"
"Check the main gate again!"
I heard the servants' voices in the distance. I calmly controlled my breathing to avoid being found.
"Where do I get in...?"
First, I had to get inside the mansion, but I obviously couldn't use the formal entrance. Just as I was wondering what to do—I remembered the walk I took with Hinako late at night. I headed deep into the garden, opened the small door, and entered the narrow, deserted hallway.
"...Thank you, Hinako."
Her favorite spot came in handy. I immediately kept moving.
"Find him!?"
"No, not here!"
Inside the mansion, a large group of servants was also in an uproar. Things had gotten rowdy, but I had no intention of retreating. Kagen-san clearly had no intention of speaking with me, so I had to see this through.
"Found him!!"
"Urk."
Black-clothed Konohana servants came from the other end of the hall. I hurriedly turned, heading for the stairs to the second floor, only to run into another group of servants.
"Get him!"
They lunged at me roughly.
"Like hell—I'll let you catch me!!"
I leaped diagonally backward, dodging the attack, and kicked one in the back.
"Ngh... uh... waaaaah!?"
The servant I kicked couldn't control his momentum and tumbled down the stairs. The stairs weren't long; he wasn't seriously injured.
"D-Dammit! This kid is strong!"
"Surround him!"
As the men pressed in, I calmly recalled Shizune-san's teachings. If they swing at you—
"What!?"
Before the fist could hit me, I ducked into his space, wrapped him up, and spun behind him. While sealing his movements, I immediately kicked the back of his knee with the sole of my foot, forcing him to kneel.
"Give up!"
I dodged the incoming punch and grabbed the man's arm. Twisting his wrist outward, I locked the joint. The man, as if unable to bear the pain, fell to the ground on his own.
"Ngh!?"
That move is called kote gaeshi. I stepped over the fallen servant and dashed up to the fourth floor.
"Shizune-san... Thank you."
Self-defense isn't about defeating the enemy; it's about protecting yourself. Its essence is—escaping the enemy. A technique perfectly suited for me right now.
"I remember the office is in this direction..."
I headed for the room where Kagen-san was. The office was the place where I first spoke with him. I didn't remember the route clearly, but I remembered the direction.
"...Hm?"
Just then, something strange caught the corner of my eye. I stopped, trying to get a clear look.
"...Hm?"
A long, thin cloth was hanging outside the window. That cloth... was a curtain. For some reason, a curtain was hanging from the floor above, swaying in the wind. Were they airing out the curtains? But it didn't look like that... I thought it was strange, and as I puzzled over it—a girl climbed down the curtain. That person was Hinako.
"Wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha-wha!?"
What is this girl doing!? I rushed to stop her, but before I could, she had already climbed down to the floor below. This is bad... If she falls, it's all over. The office was close, but I couldn't worry about that now. I hurriedly ran down the stairs, rushed outside the mansion, and shouted up at Hinako.
"Hinako! What are you doing!"
Hinako, clinging to the curtain that had been tied into a rope, looked down at me.
"It's dangerous! Get back—"
"...I can't hold on."
"What?"
A bad feeling.
"Catch me..."
"Hey."
Hinako let go of the curtain. Her small body was thrown into the air, falling. I instinctively opened my arms and caught her in my chest—
"—Ugh!?"
The strong impact forced all the air out of my lungs.
"...Nice catch."
"Wh-What are you doing... You're unbelievable..."
"I wanted to see you." Hinako said, smiling with relief. That expression, those words... how could I stay mad?
"I have a... proposal."
"A proposal?"
I didn't understand what Hinako meant and was about to ask—
"O-Ojou-sama has been captured—!!"
A servant who saw us from the mansion window shouted.
"D-Dammit!"
I didn't want to... but I couldn't just leave Hinako here. Besides, I wanted to hear this proposal. I ran, holding Hinako in my arms.

"...Kidnapped again."
"...I never thought I'd be the kidnapper this time."
Come to think of it, I remembered our first meeting was a kidnapping. Back then, I never imagined I'd become the kidnapper.
"...Did we shake them?"
I hid behind some bushes, confirmed no one was around, and let out a sigh of relief.
"What's your proposal?"
"...I'll be the hostage."
Hinako said.
"You persuade Dad."
"...That's not 'persuading,' that's 'threatening'."
"Then threaten him."
Hinako unhesitatingly proposed this outrageous plan. I was momentarily at a loss for words. After thinking about it seriously, I knew I couldn't accept this proposal.
"...No."
"Why...?"
"Doing that won't solve the root of the problem."
The problem would still exist. There's no point in a superficial fix. Furthermore, Kagen-san is powerful. If I used his weakness against him, he'd probably turn the tables on me.
"We have to find a way to convince Kagen-san. That's the only viable path."
"Convince him... Can you do it?"
"No problem."
This confidence had no basis. Even so, I declared it.
"I will absolutely convince him."
I wanted to reassure Hinako. I don't want Hinako to push herself. I, who have nowhere else to go, must repay Hinako for giving me a place to stay. To do that—I have to fight to the end.
"Where do you intend to take Ojou-sama?"
A familiar voice. I looked up... and broke out in a cold sweat.
"...Shizune-san."
The Konohana family's Head Maid. The all-capable woman. My opponent in self-defense training—whom I had never once beaten—stood blocking my path.
"Seize him."
At her brief command, servants lunged at me from all directions.
"Urk—!?"
If they caught me, I'd be immobilized. I moved toward the slimmest-looking servant, dodged his punch, and tried to break through the encirclement. Their movements were different from before; everyone was calm and coordinated. Since Shizune-san brought them, they must be highly trained. One of the four must be trying to get into my blind spot. I sensed the movement, and instead of turning, I threw a spinning back kick. My foot struck a servant's chest. He cried out, and the other three in front of me yelped in shock. I seized the chance, closed in on the servant in front of me, and threw him over my shoulder. However, in the next instant, someone grabbed me from behind.
"Crap—!?"
A fifth person had approached silently. I'd only just noticed. The first four must have been decoys. I used all my strength to break free, but it was futile. As I grit my teeth, Shizune-san walked calmly toward me.
"You've grown considerably in such a short time. Because you learn so quickly, I found myself getting serious during our training... Your growth has exceeded my expectations."
"...Since you're praising me, how about you retreat?"
"I cannot."
She said, flatly.
"...Shizune."
Hinako opened her small lips.
"I... will act properly from now on."
Hinako said, slowly walking toward the restrained me.
"I won't stop acting anymore. I will be flawless, anytime, anywhere. So... please, let me be with Itsuki."
Shizune-san said nothing, shocked by Hinako's request. This was a request Hinako would never have made, judging by her past behavior. Hinako herself should understand the burden of acting best. And her original free time was already limited. She was willing to throw all that away just to be with me. Therefore—I must reject this request.
"...Hinako, you're wrong."
I said clearly.
"I don't want you to force yourself, that's why I want to be by your side. Even if no one else can, I want to be the one person—who lets you stop trying so hard."
"...Itsuki."
I didn't want her to force herself just to be with me. Hinako's idea... was backward, as far as I was concerned.
"So please, don't give up on the thing I'm trying to protect."
Hinako must not have expected to hear those words. The girl, whose eyes were usually sleepy, stared at me, wide-eyed in surprise.
"...Mhm."
It was a tiny movement, but she definitely nodded.
"Okay... I trust you."
Her whispered voice clearly reached my ears. Hinako looked straight at me. Her eyes reflected my own gaze... it was a strange feeling. As if we could understand each other without words.
"Sorry to interrupt your moment..."
Shizune-san spoke. Now for the real problem. I glared at Shizune-san, showing my resistance—
"Itsuki-san, you don't need to worry. Things will not turn out the way you think."
"...Huh?"
Shizune-san sighed, and I froze.
"The achievements you've accomplished as an attendant will soon reach Master Kagen's ears. Please wait a moment."
"W-Wait..."
I didn't understand what Shizune-san meant. Just then, an electronic sound came from Shizune-san. She took her phone from her maid uniform pocket and looked at the screen.
"Perfect timing."
She said, putting the phone to her ear. After talking to someone for a moment, she looked at me.
"Master Kagen has summoned me. I must take my leave. Both of you, please wait here."
Shizune-san's serious expression vanished, replaced by her usual respectful demeanor.
"Shizune-san... whose side are you on?"
"I am a person hired by Master Kagen."
She then added:
"However... I am also on Ojou-sama's side."
At Kagen's request, Shizune arrived at the office and knocked.
"Pardon me." Shizune opened the door and entered. Kagen sat on the other side of the large desk.
"Master Kagen, you wished to—"
"—Come here."
Shizune nodded lightly and obeyed Kagen's request.
"What is this?"
Kagen said, motioning to the pile of documents on his desk.
"The invitations for the Konohana family banquet... These are the RSVPs. As you would be staying here temporarily, I had the replies sent to the main building brought here. I thought you would want to confirm them as soon as possible."
"That judgment was correct, but..."
Kagen undid the bundle of documents.
"...How do you explain these four guests?" Kagen handed four RSVP cards to Shizune.
"Yes."
Shizune nodded and began to explain.
"Karen Asahi-sama is the heiress of J Co., Ltd. J Co. is one of the top five consumer electronics retailers in the country and an important client of the Konohana Group."
The first explanation finished.
"Katsuya Taisho-sama's family is the famous major shipping company, known for Taisho Moving. They are also a top-tier company in their industry and partner with the Konohana Group in banking and real estate."
The second explanation finished.
"Narika Miyakojima-sama's family is Japan's largest sporting goods manufacturer. The Konohana Group is not currently involved in the sporting goods industry, but if we can build a relationship through this opportunity, there may be cooperation in the future."
The third explanation finished.
"Mirei Tennouji-sama, as you know, is the heiress of the Tennouji Group. Although they are a competitor to the Konohana Group, a group of similar scale could become a very important partner. If our two families were to join hands, it would surely produce immense profits."
The fourth explanation finished. After explaining everyone's background, Shizune added a final note:
"These four individuals... are all Ojou-sama's friends from school."
Kagen held his forehead as he listened to Shizune's explanation, a look of clear confusion on his face.
"...Although we've never hosted Asahi or Taisho before, they are decent clients."
Kagen muttered.
"I've met President Miyakojima, but he rarely attends social functions. Just now, that president said, 'If my daughter attends, I will go too,' and accepted the invitation."
Shizune nodded, thinking how fortunate.
"As for Tennouji... I know their master, of course, but this is the first time his daughter will attend. In the past, our families have only had a superficial relationship. Perhaps we can use this opportunity to build a solid relationship of trust. The Tennouji family values personal relationships more than numbers... If this goes well, we could get ahead of other groups."
By the end, Kagen was practically talking to himself. He looked at the four RSVP cards again, then let out a deep sigh and looked at Shizune.
"These are all valuable connections... And Hinako invited all of them?"
"Yes."
"She has never invited anyone before... How did she suddenly acquire these important connections?"
Kagen muttered, his expression growing more puzzled.
"Pardon my presumption."
Shizune said to the silent Kagen.
"If you are pleased by Ojou-sama's change... getting rid of the person responsible is hardly the best strategy."
"...The person responsible, huh."
Kagen understood Shizune's meaning.
"A shipbuilding company we have a minor partnership with, versus four major corporations that could become vital partners in the future..."
Kagen compared his gains and losses. He thought of the boy he had met a month ago, hired as an experiment. His feelings toward that boy, before he knew it—had turned from shock to admiration.
"...It seems the priority is already very clear."
The answer came quickly. He sighed and said:
"Call Itsuki back."
